Is there anything you actually do for a cold sore?

Is there anything I can do apart from leaving it alone, or the patches? I've looked all over and there doesn't seem to be any treatments for it. They're supposed to be caused by viruses, but I always seem to get one just underneath my lower lip after eater porridge. It feels like it's something to do with the spoon rubbing against the lip and the porridge drying on it?

    Don't eat porridge?

It's nothing to do with eating porridge.

If you get cold sores, you've picked up the herpes virus somewhere.

Just wait it out, and don't kiss people. No point giving it to them. Although, it's more contagious before it appears.

Wash around your mouth after eating your porridge

I used to get them really badly as a child. They lessened as I got older, but nothing ever obliterated them. The only thing I've ever found that eases the itch and quickens their passing is Carmex, and since I discovered it a few years ago they haven't come back. If you use it as soon as you feel the first tingle it kills the sore.

You need to go and kiss babies. Lots of babies.

*may or may not actually get rid of a cold sore*

Toothpaste can dry them out and help clear them up faster, But it does look a bit stupid though.

You could try rubbing urine into it.
It may not cure the cold sore

I must have it because I've got a total of 6 cold sores in the last year. They seem to come on arbitrary occasions. The only thing I hate about them is their appearance. They're not painful at all. And no one else seems to get them... only me!

Get some L-Lysine and take a load as soon as you feel a tingle. At the same time you also need to avoid eating nuts and chocolate as well as drinking lots of water.

I used to get 'em and was told to avoid foods high in Arginine that were also low in Lysine (Nuts, chocolate etc) and work for me.

Soon as I eat peanuts, especially chocolate ones, sure enough I will get one within days.

    Lifelong sufferer here.

Not much you can do I'm afraid. You can go and spend a pretty penny on very expensive branded creams, but you'll still end up with a horrible sore on your lip that goes from a tingle, to a swollen sore, then a burst sore then a scab then eventually back to normal.

All you can really do is keep it disinfected and ride it out.

well I eat wall nuts and brazil nuts everyday, so I doubt it's anything to do with that

Herpes is like a gypsy curse, the only way to free yourself is to pass it onto someone else.

    Bee propolis

I didn't know you could use propolis on cold sores. I've been dumping it in the past but I might hold on to some to try it next time.

    No, I'm not.
Why bother asking for advice when you seem to be to stupid to listen to any of it?

Just stop eating porridge and your problem is solved.

use a dab of surgical spirit on the sore twice a day to dry out the cold sore.. it will heal quicker

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 209 ✭✭To Need a Woman

BTW, I was meant to be going out tonight. This cold sore of mine at the moment is barely visible... which is even more annoying because I can't decide on whether it's small enough not to be noticed!

Another interesting thing is that I rarely get cold sores on my upper lip.

Now that we have diagnosed and given treatment advice for the cold sore ..

And you have just verified that your hearing is ok ..

What else do you want AH Doctors to treat you for ?

We can diagnose everything ,but can't fix certain ailments ..
(i.e. being a knob ,too nice ,certain scumminess and being a politician)
