more cables? what am i BORG or something?

cables are nests for dirt and the look bad too.

You're not doing it right :p wind them up tight and put a bit of tape on them like I do with mine. Cables will be around for a long time yet, the copper ones will in future be replaced by fibre optic in our homes as we strive for faster transfer speeds to cope with our ballooning bandwidth needs. Wireless will always be a trade off compared to the stability and faster speeds of cables. Eventually we'll have fibre optic connected TV's

so no then you have never modded your box,
    thank you

oo btw if you think fiber tv will be a thing someday, your so wrong. i worked as a splicer a i know what it can and can't do, the biggest fail with fiber is the public messing with it. so fibre tv's would never work. maybe if the person never messed with it, but in general, no.

Easy, with pre made cables and connectors. Intel is already using it for Thundebolt PC interfaces, Toslink has been around for years, same thing. I've worked with plenty of fibre networking gear, everything needed is already available and affordable. We'll be adding fibre to our homes before long, in fact I know some who've already started. I predict we'll eventually be replacing our electrical double sockets with one that also has a fibre connector as there is no longer safety or interference issues with running fibre alongside electrical.

BTW, I'm with you for modding the box, I've been considering opening mine for a look to see can i fit the hdd inside.

That's enough off topic for me, back on track

    Hi everyone,

Really new to all this so please bear with me I am a newbie / dummy. I have installed Fresh Pots latest image (major respect and thanks) but as soon as it boots up I get an error regarding harddisk links! I am using the same drive I have used on other images so I am at a loss as to why this error appears and it seems to think the drive is not EXT2 / 3 when it is so I am asking for a pointer if possible? The other thing I have is with oscam which only seems to want to clear certain channels which might be something I am not doing but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a guide which would show me how to grab the necessary files from a working image and put them onto this image! I would stick with the image that I have which works "Poggs image from linux-sat" but the green screen when it boots does drive me mad along with the fact that I find if I don't boot the machine every couple of days it becomes very laggy.

I really do wish to say a massive thanks to Fresh Pots and everyone else who put in the work to improve this box which is in my opinion is very good for the money it costs.

    With thanks,

    Jimmyinit

That error means your hard drive is not mounted properly. Press the blue home button, go to HDD manager and mount point 1 as /dev/sda1.Press green. Thats how mine is set up. Oscam discussion is not allowed here in the forum.

The harddisk link error on Fresh Pots image is related to the permanent timeshift plugin, disabling permanent timeshift in plugins gets rid of it.

We cannot help you here with oscam

Thanks for the fast reply I will give this a try later when I get home, and my apologises for my schoolboy error.

This has been done. On one of the other forums , some members discussed how they fitted a SATA drive inside their box, drawing power internally. I think it was the sattvhelp forum.

    There is room in there!

And graphene may well be the way for future connections.

I did read some time ago that someone fitted a hdd inside the box and wired it to the rear usb

Graphene improves the efficiency of switches and gear at either end, it still uses fibre optic cable. You cannot get faster than fibre optic, it's the speed of light.

Would be a nice mod but I don't think it's worth the hassle. If you do do it be sure an post a pic.

Seems like a logical argument. At this point in the development of Graphene , its being touted as the future of all things. From space craft to implants, power transmission to nano filters. So we will all probably just end up with fancy bikes made of the stuff!

What's the word on the A3 release date? Would it of interest to folks here? What price would tempt?

No release date yet, the A3 that's announced is a single tuner box, would not be of any use to use here. They'll release that before they release dual and triple tuner ones

Other than having ab set to fta is there any difference between this and my image?

I have spent about 3 man hours tweaking AutoBouquets to work as it does now for users who use Free To Air and Free To View only.

I also took on board some comments made by some users here and made my backup a complete Sky free zone.

"Free to view require active card in top slot. Insert upside down"

don't understand what you mean? All FTA channels on Freeasat are available without any card inserted. Or am I missing something?

Free to view channels are not fta ,they require a viewing card .

I see the "permanenttimesift" plugin is included is alot of the Hyperion backups. What's the advantage of it over the intergrated timeshift included with the Hyperion image?

You can request a Free to View card off Setanta for free or else an old viewing card will work .
You can watch Sony Movies,Sony TV,Motors TV and Liverpool FC Tv which is a nice addition.

Timeshift allows you to pause, it's not doing anything until you hit pause, permanent timeshift allows you to rewind live tv, it runs continuously

I never liked permanent timeshift on any E2 receiver, always seemed to be buggy and very demanding on performance and the hard drive .
Do you use it on the Alien 2 ,if so how do you find it ?

Not 100% sure but I think setanta stopped giving them out free. eBay might be the only way to get one now.
