The Iberian claim is to account for the so called Black Irish of the Spanish Armada. The big thing I always used to hear was that the Irish and Scots aren't Celts , we're mongrel anglo saxon and other breeds.

Celts were in mainland Europe, you'll notice that facial features of a Celt look nothing Irish or Scots, sallower skin pointy noses and dark hair.

The few Spanish sailors that survived the wreck of the Armada were either clubbed over the head as they lay gasping on the beaches, so their gold rings could be robbed, or hauled into Galway for prosecution.

The dark-featured people you see in the West are descendants of the people from NW Spain who got here after the last Ice Age, and/or the trade links between Galway and Spain that go back centuries.

the angles and saxons came to england in the 6 century (I think),from present day germany and denmark

I always heard that the celts were driven to the north of Britain by the Saxons or some people, that's why Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have a Celtic heritage. It's worth noting that the mainland Europeans may have different facial features because they would have mixed with other groups of people over the years a bit like the Irish and Vikings

The more fool you for giving any remote credibility whatsoever to 'royal lineage".

And how does having an interest in genealogy qualify as being silly?

    Because it doesn't matter.

You may as well keep a record of all the ****s you've taken over the past few years.

    Both equally interesting and relevant.

A proud son of Ulster you are. Don't bother with Hugh though recent research has revealed that he wasn't pure, he was connected through his mother, it's the paternal line that counts. Covered up at the time and the lies continue to be told.

I am an Ulsterman for generations upon generations but have a great-grandmother from connaught which widens my descent out a bit. all other surnames are from ulster and the scottish islands/highlands

Its good to be proud of your heritage and family history but I have known a few people who take it too far to the point where they think it makes them better?

My mother is a south Offaly O'Neill, I've very proud of my links to the great Northern Province as I am for the O'Connors. Two great clans producing offspring like myself.

I read a while ago that there is castle ruins in westmeath or somwhere with a red hand engraved in the stone, I can't find where i read it. The Northern + Southern Ui Neill cousins used to take turns at the high kingship year after year

Really? I can't imagine anyone acting superior because they're an O'Brien or whatever. Can you give us some examples?

On the other hand it's funny seeing people on this thread getting touchy over the mere mention of royalty.

There's a definite link between Iberia and Ireland, even the shrews are genetically similar and we also share the Kerry slug.

€6 for two slices of bread, €6 for a slice of bacon to go between them and another 50C if I actually want to eat it.

Wherever I go prosperity follows [yet he leaves a toxic dump behind!!].

Ye don't wanna know my history in this thread, my family is from a long line of people who dethroned the Old Irish Kings and we have quite a few lands and estates dotted around the British Isles [:)] but succession is long broken and our family even had to change its name and we got ostracized ~ from all sides, so I suspect we have some treachery still to be uncovered.

I find genealogy really interesting, finding out who your ancestors were and what kind of lives they led etc. My own tree seemed to be fairly colourful after some research- one was a professional boot legger in the US, one man married 4 times and had 21 kids, one was a convict sent to Australia etc etc.

We were always told that we were a direct line of descendants from Brian Boru but chances are its just a scéal.

Legend has it that my surname came to Ireland in the 1400's via somebody who tried to kill the then king of England, failed miserably then ran away to Ireland in an effort to keep his head, neck and body all attached together.

If that doesn't give me a claim to the throne then I don't know what will :D

Everyone with the O'Brien surname are direct descendants of his though as the surname was based on him
