Anyone here from the families of Tara? The last family who held the seat were the Ua Conchobhair, my own clan a great royal people, my mother is O'Neill so I'm bullet proof to any 'true gael' republican types with planters surnames. Hardwise peasant types getting emotional.

Anyone else of a Royal lineage?

    O' Brien
    O' Connor
O' Neill (Domnall in 956 before they get prissy about Ulster)
    Mc'Donnell.

These are examples of Irish Royal families in the latter period of the High Kings.

I am O'Neill. Most important clan in Irish history and possibly oldest surname in Europe.

I have no problem with republicans having English surnames though, it's only 1 side of their descent. We were from Iberia if you go back far enough.

also, there was a High-King named Muirchertach Mac Lochlainn as well.

Did they ever manage to prove that? I thought recent research suggested that was a bit of an origin myth.

i don't know, i read somewhere recently that there was a lot of dna connection between Galicia and Ireland and that it supported the mythology a bit

I'm sure the OP is more than capable of deciding what is or isn't relevant. And how does having an interest in genealogy qualify as being silly?

    I'm related to king Tutunkhamun

Somewhere on my mothers side of the family , we go way back me and Tut

But it might have been through marriage so don't know if that still counts

your just ashamed of your Viking blood around Cork

It's also useful in Norn Ireland to know you have royal blood as our orange neighbours think they rule the place 'our wee country' and all that

The Iberian claim is to account for the so called Black Irish of the Spanish Armada. The big thing I always used to hear was that the Irish and Scots aren't Celts , we're mongrel anglo saxon and other breeds.

Celts were in mainland Europe, you'll notice that facial features of a Celt look nothing Irish or Scots, sallower skin pointy noses and dark hair.

The few Spanish sailors that survived the wreck of the Armada were either clubbed over the head as they lay gasping on the beaches, so their gold rings could be robbed, or hauled into Galway for prosecution.

The dark-featured people you see in the West are descendants of the people from NW Spain who got here after the last Ice Age, and/or the trade links between Galway and Spain that go back centuries.

the angles and saxons came to england in the 6 century (I think),from present day germany and denmark

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,223 ✭✭✭orangesoda

I always heard that the celts were driven to the north of Britain by the Saxons or some people, that's why Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have a Celtic heritage. It's worth noting that the mainland Europeans may have different facial features because they would have mixed with other groups of people over the years a bit like the Irish and Vikings

    Because it doesn't matter.

You may as well keep a record of all the ****s you've taken over the past few years.

    Both equally interesting and relevant.

A proud son of Ulster you are. Don't bother with Hugh though recent research has revealed that he wasn't pure, he was connected through his mother, it's the paternal line that counts. Covered up at the time and the lies continue to be told.

My mother is a south Offaly O'Neill, I've very proud of my links to the great Northern Province as I am for the O'Connors. Two great clans producing offspring like myself.

I read a while ago that there is castle ruins in westmeath or somwhere with a red hand engraved in the stone, I can't find where i read it. The Northern + Southern Ui Neill cousins used to take turns at the high kingship year after year
