The look of fear in the second lads eyes as he was asked what is gluten, :pac:.

Yeah but on the other hand, a lot of people can't tolerate others claiming to have illnesses they have because they want to be special.

I have severe IBS and am intolerant to gluten. My coeliac test came back negative, but my systems are severe enough that I've been referred for all manner of scans and scopes and have really been very unwell. I resent coeliacs telling me I'm just looking for attention when I buy gluten free bread. Why would anyone do that? It's a bloody rip off and it makes your life harder. I wish I could eat cheapo bread, pizza and pasta like everyone else.

    It's not a competition.

And it's so bizarrely counterproductive! The more people that seek out gluten free products - whether for genuine reasons or because it's "fashionable", the more demand is created and hopefully prices therefore wil drop!

    Yep.

I genuinely don't understand what the issue is. If it's just that people don't eat gluten because they don't want to, so what? Are people not entitled to eat what they want?

Again, I think it comes down to people wanting to feel special.

I don't know do I fully buy into the whole gluten intolerance thing.

It seems to have taken off in the last few years and I casually notice that anyone who is intolerant to gluten are the type who like the attention of being a bit awkward anyway in terms of food.

It's like the whole thing that white potatoes are evil these days.
Absolute BS!! They're very nutritious and if any ethnicity can afford to binge on them it's us Irish.
Before the famine us Irish were the tallest in Europe on a diet that consisted of spuds and not much else so they didn't do us much harm.

In the same way humankind have been eating wheat for Lord knows how long and we haven't done too bad.

The important question is how I use this thread to justify stealing the last Pepperami.

I would never claim i have gluten intolerance all i would say to people is that my digestive system runs a lot smoother when i stay away from white bread, limit my intake of wholegrain bread, and generally only rarely eat pasta.

I think if your body feels better in itself avoiding certain foods that is great, but i wouldn't try and give it a medical term or reasoning, as far as im concerned everybody is different.

Not blaming wheat but what makes you say "haven't done too bad" ?

    That ain't good going

Would that not be more to do with refined sugar intake rather than gluten intolerance?

    It's a load of nonsense. That's what.
    Could you elaborate?

I don't buy the "Bread is the devil" view, but too much bread is bad - even brown bread. For a long time it was seen as a nutritious food because it's savoury I guess, but it's high in calories and additives.
I don't cut out bread completely (I would assume those who do, suffer from constipation?) but I just have one or two small slices of brown bread a day, and it definitely benefits my sinuses and stomach (both of which are prone to minor aggravations). White bread, baguettes, other doughy stuff etc are a no-no for me.

Although I do love beer. :o
Not weissbier so I'm grand. :p

It's the same type of pox research that made people stop eating eggs for breakfast.

And it's the same type of scientific woo that has people following braindead paleo diets.

There will always be a Doctor - who got their award cheaply - ready to put their name to some new piece of 'ground-breaking' research about diet.
There are still some people who believe that vaccinations cause autism, despite that "doctor" being discredited

Wait, what's wrong exactly with a paleo diet?
The whole premise. Real palaeolithic peoples would not have eaten anything like a modern paleo diet. They'd have eaten a much more seasonally varied one.

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

    1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

    2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

    3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

    4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

    5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

    CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Why would people who don't eat bread suffer from constipation? I don't really eat bread, not from actively avoiding it (I do like the odd garlic bread or bruschetta on occasion), I just usually have other stuff instead from day to day. I've actually never in my life been constipated or suffered from anything sinus related.

I mean it benefits my sinuses to limit bread. I just assumed lack of roughage would cause constipation, but in fairness I suppose there are other sources of roughage besides bread!

Gluten intolerance for non coeliacs is nothing but a hipster fad; and as an employee of one of the country's top sandwich joints I hope it goes away soon.

I was thinking of the whole picture thing - "this one tiny hint" isn't much use

One of the first things the nutritionist said to me was "you'd need to lay off the white bread - it's not that bad but it doesn't last in your system long and you could do better for the amount "

Fecal matter analysis is very important part of gluten assessment.:-)

Ha ha no I mean I would prefer if they looked at immunological response at histological and biochemical level.

I have read that approximately 40% of IBS sufferers have depression also.

But I guess some in the thread think that depression - like IBS - is all in the mind.

I ... I dont think anyone suggested anything of the sort. The suggestion is that the scientifically proven then unproven NCGI doesn't exist.

We don't know if it does or doesn't exist.

My mum is on a gluten free diet but is not a true coeliac. She has a form of dermatitis that's flared up by oats, rye, barley or wheat. She also lost 2 stone within a year of going on the diet.

Depression IS all in the mind though. We may not fully understand the brain biochemistry behind it but it definitely occurs there.

Just because something is "all in the mind" doesn't make it less real to the sufferer, however it does change how that disorder should be tackled by medical professionals. It's extremely irresponsible behaviour to pander to patients whose fears are simply being fuelled by a multi-million dollar diet industry.

So what does gluten taste like? Is it nice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,827 ✭✭✭fussyonion

I don't know if it's "all in the mind", but I have noticed that white doughy bread and bread products do not agree with me at all.

Is this 'cos I'm gluten-intolerant? Or is it just that my digestive system can't process it?
    I don't know.

All I know is that last week I ate some French baguette and I was rolling around on the bed in agony for an hour after it.

It could also be IBS but at least I have found a trigger food that I will be avoiding from now on.

A relative of mine was diagnosed as being coeliac but she still eats stuff she shouldn't and doesn't seem to suffer from it.

People can just be mildly allergic to anything as well. I don't avoid any food, but just for me personally, I feel better, suffer less heartburn and my skin doesn't irritate me in anyway when I have potatoes instead of pasta, vodka instead of beer, wraps instead of bread, chocolate instead of biscuits, green tea instead of coffee, that kind of thing for whatever reason. Not overly bothered with the why I've found some things agree with me more than others tbh.
