Any of you spot the unreal stat on Sunday.

How many balls are swallowed up in the water at Sawgrasss every year?

    :eek:150,000:eek:

How many balls do you go through in a year?
I have no idea, but a guess I might average about 2-3 balls a round.

What determines a ball that you no longer use?
I will pretty much use it till it's in bits or cracked. then it goes in the practice bag.

I spotted Rory chucking a used ball in the water the other day and thought to myself, I'm running low, I could have done with that. But for god sake Rory if I can't have it, you could of at least thrown it to a kid in the crowd......

I made this same observation myself but I did see him handing one to a girl later on. He specifically gave it to the smallest kid of the lot, she proceeded to hand it to her father :D

Unreal indeed. More than 400 balls every one of the 365 days of the year? Somewhat inflated figure, I think

All of them fished out and sold as lake balls. Lucky to get a second round out of a ball the way i'm playing. Have a fair few rounds where i could dump a couple in the lakes around Roganstown.

Rory does this a lot, misses a put, ball goes in the water. It's very petulant.

    150,000 a year !

    Working in round numbers

    Thats 3000 balls a week.

Thats over 400 balls sunk every single day !!

Say 50 slots a day - thats 8 balls lost for every 4 ball slot !

Seems a lot alright but i reckon some guys empty their bag of balls trying to hit the 17th. 2 balls per person average around a course like that with lots of water dosen't sound crazy.

The "stat" is 150,000 balls a year on just the 17th

Ok, I just looked around the Web and I might have gotten the figure wrong. 120,000 seems to be the figure generally quoted on the web (though I'm pretty sure Sky did say 150,000)..... for the 17th alone!!!! - I had meant to include this in my first post.

That's an average of one sleeve per player as they have about 40,000 rounds per year.

I guess when you think about this, it's not a lot as the course will pull people into golf, not necessarily good at it. I know if and when I ever get to play the course, I will not be walking off the tee until I land one on the green. I mean, even from the drop zone, you still have to carry the water, so may as well keep going from the tee if you're never going to be there again!

They do claim 150,000. Source (official Sawgrass FB post): https://www.facebook.com/TPCSawgrass/posts/153246681395097?stream_ref=5

I'm guessing they probably cash in and do a lot of corporate stuff at the course that involves lads having a go at 17 rather than playing a round.

Give 50 suits, 50 sleeves of ProVs and an hour and you have a nice chunk of the daily quota accounted for.

And you get only one shot on the 17th. If you put in the drink that's you gone!

I saw that before but I believe regular patrons gets one shot and if it gets wet there is someone there to tell you to move on!

In that case then how can the average be 3 balls per player in the water?

I'd be pretty peeved at forking out $400 + to be told move on if I put my first shot in the drink.

Two friends of mine played sawgrass earlier in the year.

On 17, the first guy hit 3 in the water before finally holding the green.

He then lobbed 5 balls one after another to the other guy, all of which got wet.

    That's 3 + 1 + 5 = 9 balls for two guys in a fourball so 400 balls a day is very achieveable
