I find Mastodon and Gojira to be incredibly overrated, and in particular I find Mastodon boring.

Grindcore is much, much better than prog metal.

    I think this one wins!

All German thrash metal is horrendous. No feeling, no inventiveness, just a blueprint that they stick to time and time again.
I'm not too familiar with other German thrash metal bands but I think the early Kreator albums are awesome.

    I don't rate Motorhead - never have.

Cradle of Filth were actually a pretty decent band, but some people just can't look past the aesthetics. :o

    Pantera, Damageplan and Down.

    So, so disappointing.

I would prefer Tankard's early stuff, but Kreator or Sodom were high quality stuff as well

I remember loving 'The Morning After' when I was a kid. It was my "fun" record.

They were fantastic up til Midian in fairness, Dusk is a great album. They lost their way after that I think (Midian I mean)

Aside from Blood and Thunder Mastodon write turgid rock numbers with stock riffs.

Aside from a few songs, Tool write turgid, bland songs with boring pentatonic guitar solos.

Meshuggah are good but write only one type of song and the shouty vocals are annoying.

    Rush are incredibly boring

Dream Theatre are cheese theatre, some of their music sounds like Disney music.

I would consider this blasphemy rather than an unpopular opinion!

For me, Nirvana's come as you are is the most over rated song ever. It's an awful awful song.

Placebo would have been a lot more successful had it not been for the gay/bisexual connections.

We will never have a rockstar with the aura of Morrison, Hendrix, Cobain ever again due to blanket media coverage, information availability and modern technology. Nobody has that mystique anymore.

Steve Jobs has done more harm to the music industry than Simon Cowell. Too much music is available with MP3's. People don't zone in on a band anymore and just skip to the next album/artist if they are bored rather than give an album more time or another listen.

Come as You Are isn't awful or anything. The only thing is that the main riff is basically a slowed-down version of the riff from Eighties by Killing Joke, which is an awesome song by the way.

Regarding mp3s, I don't see how too much music being available is a bad thing. People have so much more choice now and access to artists whom they might not have access to otherwise. Even more so now with streaming services like Spotify. I usually try to give an album at least two listens before I form an opinion on it. Granted some albums take many listens to get into but I don't like to waste too much time on an album which I think is only good at best. If I hear some redeeming qualities in it I might listen further. There's a lot of great music out there to listen to and I want to zone in on the albums that sound amazing to me, not just good. It just takes a bit of effort to find them even if it means skipping from one album to another.

Agree with the state of the music industry today. I think it's ridiculous as well that people expect music for free. Yes, I and anyone else would be like cool, free music! when you get a cd from a friend to rip but it seems that popular opinion holds art to have no value. I would still pay for an album that I like. Btw, thanks, that's a higher compliment, I'm a blasphemer!

Just listened to that Killing Joke song, it's pretty good alright. Plus the guitarist looks like Conan O'Brien! Makes me dislike come as you are even more though!

Don't get me wrong, I love my ipod and the convenience of having everything in one place but I know there has been times when I moved on from a new album without giving it the time that I would have before the ipod, mainly as I had so many other options at my fingertips.

There is loads of great music out there but it is quite easy for a gem to get lost in it. You might sacrifice some extra plays of a new album that could push it from an okay to a cult in your eyes and keep searching for a 'better' album. MP3's have facilitated this through increasing the ease of access to music. It's the modern era problem of information overload I think.

Zakk Wilde sounds better when he plays slower. Sorry.

You make some great points, as far current listening habits it's why people dismiss albums as boring or whatever. They won't give it time, and that's what art needs. Just to expand on this I don't think cds ruined album culture soundwise like people who obsess over vinyl like to believe. But time instead of a solid 35-38 minutes artists had twice the time and a lot of filler got stuck on. I mean some of my favourite albums are sprawling but it ramped up the average album time and again a lot of filler was placed on an album.

As far as the rockstar mystique, I agree with that to an certain point Zeppelin and Sabbath rarely talked to the media, then again the media hated those bands and vice versa. But it's not the 70's anymore, and things change naturally. I believe with the whole rockstar thing is a very rose tinted romantic image a lot of people like to carry with them as well.

    Also The Doors are terrible.

Probably not that unpopular but Dio era Sabbath is better than Ozzy era Sabbath.

Ozzy was best post Sabbath when went he went solo. better songs, singing. But I don't think Zakk was good for him. They seem to find a rut and stay there.

I can't abide by metal these days because the vocals make me want to claw my ears off. There's very little self expression. When I come across people giving out that a band isn't staying true to a genre I makes me want to puke. Screw genres. Just write music that expresses yourself and quit trying to be so heavy and crass. Only fools that need a smack think that trying to shout louder than everyone else is a form of self expression.

Eddie Van Halen's solos are what stupid people think is good guitar!

The wording of that is crass, his playing could be hammy at times but he is a great player. Also what's good playing and bad playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭Burt Macklin

Dio is a better singer than Ozzy but there's no comparison between Paranoid/Master of Reality/Vol. 4 and any Dio era Sabbath album IMHO. Or any Dio album full stop.

Metallica may be overrated, but they are still better than any extreme metal band I have ever heard.

If you think EVH is all about technical solos, or even solos in general you're missing the point massively. There isn't a lot of soloing in general in VH.

    The wording was also jocular.

I don't like how you phrase it - "good playing". He is undoubtedly technically brilliant.

As with all art, it's easier to say what doesn't qualify. And I would put fast playing for the sake of it in that category.

Tone's hard to gauge sometimes you know yourself. How should I phrase it so, I was simply asking what do you like. Stevie Vai's great but so what,I get where your coming from.
