And what to blame? According to this article, its the unregulated liberal free market. Really.

    I call bullsh*t.

More propaganda from the elites! They just want to turn us all into robot-soldiers for the coming mega-war!

In reviewing the results, she said: “Our study presents a worrying picture of rising obesity across Europe. Policies to reverse this trend are urgently needed.”

F*cking bread and pasta... I don't understand how more Germans aren't fat. You can't walk more than a few meters down the road before encountering a pizzeria or a bakery. I swear, half the restaurants here just serve bread or pasta with sauce on them...

Foodwise, Ireland is excellent for its vegan/vegetarian foods, massive selection and careful consideration of those who want gluten-free food.

I've also developed a deep hatred of pizzerias and Italian food. So sick of it.

I agree with you, their wording could be better, unregulated in specific key areas, salt and sugar being two issues that politicians seem slow to pick up on. All fine and dandy, 'giving advice', but the way food is processed, the industry seem to be taking the piss and happy to reap profits, at the expense of your health. I remember reading about a large muffin from a certain supermarket (..with a letter 'T'), containing over 2g of salt. That's either negligent or malicious intent. Have a look at the wrappers of various pies and pastries from the same retailer.. not very good for you.

Goes off in some many areas, education seems to be a thing, obesity is often a marker for umm.. socio economic groups. There seems to be a big problem among women, at a certain income level. The 'pillow belly'..

Not surprised to hear the Irish are among the greediest in Europe. There is a severe problem with material greed in Irish Society.

It makes people who have never done a days work in their lives bitter.

We are also an extremely productive and hard working workforce. ..this leads to snacking and an over reliance on convenience foods...where as our euopean cousins work max 8 hours per day with long lunch breaks and then have hours to cook long sensual meals...irish see food in two ways: fuel and soakage, not as an integral part of family and cultural life.
Eating garlic cheesy chips or the likes more than a couple times a year is also a mistake.

oz is the second fattest nation in the world after the USA. i don't think we are near as bad as them. when i went to the usa i crossed the border from Canada the first thing i saw was a massively fat cop on border control : ).in the outback in oz there are so many obese people its ridiculous. Ireland is getting worse tho. the fast food industry isnt suffering in the recession too much.

    http://scienceblog.com/72312/most-europeans-to-be-fatties-by-2030/

So apparently we're the fattest in Europe and by 2030 84% of women and 90% of men are projected to be overweight or obese. Can I use this as evidence in future when I say that we Irish aren't a very attractive bunch? :P

    Shesh.

91% of people know that 4/5 statistics are just made up.

Glad to be of help. :)

There's nothing wrong with bread and pasta, there's nothing 'wrong' with any food. Even fresh air is bad for you if you swallow too much of it though.

I'm not worried. Obesity should be wiped out by then. Surely a tablet or other treatment will be developed to fight obesity.

Every western nation is the " fattest in the world" depending on which newspaper you read

Everywhere I've travelled to has fat people, and twice as many convenience foods as decent home-made foods.

Too much artificial foods masquerading as natural and healthy.

You know, I really hate those ads that show the children turning from skinny to tubby.

What a great way to build up a child's self esteem and inspire good parenting.

Just thought I'd mention it here.

How about instead of paying for another study we make gym memberships tax-free or tax deductible?

What have gimes got to do with obesity; some of the fattest people I've ever seen were in there!

If you want to lose weight you stop eating, simple as that!

    Very little.

Its the latest fad thing to believe everyone is intolerant of gluten, and the staples of European diets for thousands of years are somehow evil.

Eating too many calories is what causes obesity.

Is there anything to be said for normal portion sizes and eating crappy food in moderation?

It seems to be working for me.
