well they can't say they weren't warned!!

A Fine Gael councillor was assaulted while out canvassing.

Cllr Humphrey Deegan, inset, was canvassing for party colleague John O'Sullivan in Clonakility, west Cork, when the incident happened.

Mr Deegan said canvassers were calling at houses on Connolly Street when a man launched obscenities and then hit him in the face.

"The level of abuse thrown at me was appalling. He was calling me a blue-shirt bastard and a liar," said Mr Deegan, who will report it to gardai.

Not a FG supporter but assault is assault . Have reasoned arguments with these guys on the doorstep but assault or personal abuse is just wrong !!

FG don't practice what they preach, the OP is out on the streets causing anarchy every week.

If you don't like the current politicians you will get your say on the 23rd of May. If you are in disagreement with the results of the election you have to like it or lump it. That's democracy in action.

Violence is never right and I hope the culprit gets a hefty prison sentence.

Fair play for your man intending to keep on canvassing!

Regardless of your political views, assaulting someone who's canvassing just isn't on, and I hope the councillor will press charges.

On the Loaded thread Title scale the title of this thread is off the scale.

The 'hoi polloi' are pished off with politicos & their never ending bull****, false gestures & punitive stealth taxes...

Anger & frustration will manifest itself physically for the few...

Having said that, I am not advocating/condoning reactionary violence, better to engage them on an intelligent level via the democratic process.

i never advocated violence but i did point out that the politicians were warned, they were plenty warned that if they continued to treat people like a bunch of kunts someone was eventually going to flip. i'm more fond of peaceful protests myself

Are people suggesting that this was some sort of politically-motivated action or what? It was some local lunatic, probably p*ssed or off his meds attacking some man out canvassing. I hate Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, but I'm not mad enough to think that their local representatives are some sort of evil incarnate as opposed to ordinary men and women. The only thing this is indicative of is that there's a few mental cases in the area.

I'd be curious to know what party this lad (and indeed the OP) support. Given the violence perpetrated and the support from the OP, I have a fair idea.

Our neighbourhood nutjob is out roaring through a megaphone at all the canvassers who visit our estate. He's a one man crusader protesting about everything. Some of his own children are currently in state care through his abuse and neglect, yet he has no shame in giving out about the taxes imposed to support them.

I'd LOVE if one of them would call to my door. Chickeny b*stards won't though!

Op believes the country should be run by an amalgamation of independent TD's who are replaced every 18 months, they are overseen by the magic money faeries who give the TD's extra cash to spend to run the country hence there will be no need for new taxes.

When you call someone a bastard, and then assault them, you have lost any high moral ground you may have had.
He'll probably be a hero in his local with more of his ilk

How about changing the thread title to "FG councillor viciously assaulted while canvassing"? At least make it more truthful

The left wing in this country are sickening. They honestly feel that abuse and violence is OK just because their lives are ****.

The far left politicians are encouraging the latest incidents too. Their ground support are encouraged to go out and confront FG/Lab politicians and troll social network sites

I also seen one certain left wing party cutting down posters of Fianna Fail in the last elections.

The chorus of hate on all these websites and forums is exhausting.
    It's also incredibly hypicritical.
The ordinary people I see around me in the world have equivalent or lower level of integrity, work ethic, honour and efficacy than any of these public figures.
I wouldn't expect people to be dancing with joy but Righteosness is definitely the new religion in Ireland. Maybe makes people feel better in a short term, self indulgent way.

The quotes from the article on the Journal suggest Cllr. Deegan went to restrain the man after he started shouting abuse and knocked the flyers out of his hand.
Deegan said the man, believed to be aged in his early 20s, then knocked his election literature out of his hands.

“I tried to restrain him up against the car,” Deegan said, adding that he sustained the superficial cuts to his face in the ensuing scuffle.

Walking away clearly not an option that was considered!

I wouldn't ever resort to violence and screaming and shouting does no good, just gets your blood pressure up and causes you stress. I find saying nothing and very quietly shutting the door in their faces is just as effective. Gets the message across, wouldn't you say?
