Just wondering if anybody could give me an idea of a workout routine for starting off lifting weights. I have never lifted before and i got a set of dumbbells to start off at home. I have no idea of about any workout routines or how many times i should do them a week. My main goal is just to tone up a bit and lose the flabby hands starting off. My other exercise is 30 mins a day on the treadmill and a 40 minute walk with the dog.

You could try Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred.. It's on Youtube. It's pretty accessible for beginners. You may find after a while though that dumbbells are not enough, and you'll want to move up. But it's a good mix of exercises including dumbbells that vary up your workout so you stay focused.

I know a wave of the experts will come on and say that dumbbells are no good and you should be lifting heavy, but it's about whatever works for you, and I found that DVD quite good. I also do Body Pump (barbell) classes at the gym.

Ermagawd, you should be lifting heavy as it is more efficient! That DVD is a great way to get to see the difference resistance work will make though. Wife went from 30 day shred to ripped in 30 and then on to straight barbell lifting.
