I prefer limerick over any other city because of that grid layout. It's quite organised.
It's not a city to spend the day walking around but when you know what you want to buy and which shops you want to check it's very easy to get around.

I will always choose limerick over cork, just a city I know well. They've also been doing alot to improve the city and to help with the current view.

Every city has it's rough spots.

I am from Limerick, and last Christmas we did a pub crawl of pubs we had never been to, there was 3 of us out, and it had to be the first time for all of us in each pub, it most mostly the pubs up the top of William st etc, some of these pubs looked dodgy, but we had the best night, the people would be classed by rough by people in this thread, but we couldn't have had more craic with them.

I much prefer nights out in Limerick over cork galway Dublin etc

My girlfriend lives in Limerick so I have spent many many weekends there over the past 2 years. I'm not too gone on Limerick city centre, asthetically I don't find much of it easy on the eye. A lot of the Georgian buildings have been ruined by nasty shop fronts.

As a pedestrian I find the grid system very annoying, crossing the street can be frustrating.

There are some great bars and restaurants in Limerick. Some of the best food I've eaten has been in Limerick. As a venue I think the Milk Market is great as well.

County Limerick has some lovely little towns. Overall I find Limerick people friendly too.

I'm from Cork city and I have lived in Galway and Dublin...I'd probably rate Cork, Galway and Dublin above Limerick.....sorry Limerick.

You can like both of them you know! The two of them would be my favourite Irish cities to explore shop and socialize in although i have an affinity with Waterford as well.I like Cork a lot but for some reason i prefer walking around Limerick in the late evening.btw I don't think anyone mentioned Enzos yet and the Texas Steakout is a great dining spot.It aint Michelin star cuisine but if you want good wholesome fair then you can't beat it!

It used to be a great city for shopping in and now the city centre is a dull and lacklustre place with very little choice. I'd go into the city centre 2 or 3 times a month and I really don't bother to hang around. Perhaps these rugby tourists that other posters have mentioned, staying in hotels in the city centre are hiring cars and travelling elsewhere, as frankly as far as the city centre goes, once you've seen the castle and the museum that's all there seems to be to do.

Limerick people can be lovely and the negative scumbag element gets more coverage that the positive elements of Limerick. It's great to see more festivals being added to increase tourism. But somethings are just ridiculous. We usually go to the same cafe in the city centre for the past few years as it's central and convenient, nothing special by any means. Now the menu isn't great so we'd usually get a toasted sandwich and a tuna melt with a couple of coffees, that's always been fine.

We went in after 11 yesterday morning and were told we couldn't have them until after 12. Well that's a new one. We could have it last week and any other time we went in of a morning. So they not only lost about 15 euro in business yesterday, they have lost our business permanently. It's a shame to see businesses adopting that kind of attitude. Jeez, I really miss Bewleys on Cruises street:(

Spot on. The last few times I've been there has only really be Chocolat or Bella Italia in terms of eating out, and if you want something more casual it's quite hard to find it.

Even in college I remember us going to a particular place and being very disappointed by the service and food and yet after graduation we went back there as it was literally the only place in town serving cooked breakfast.

If you compare it to Galway which is smaller, it has millions of places to eat. I lived in Galway for a year and I still never got to eat in all the places I wanted to!

I think Limerick has a hell of a lot of potential. Itself and Dublin are the only two cities I can think of (open to correction) that have such lovely Georgian buildings. Dublin has been far from perfect in keeping its houses in good condition (the monstrous ESB building springs to mind) but all in all, many of the houses are in better condition than some streets in Limerick. Dublin is famous for its doorways, but Limerick could be equally so if the Georgian quarter was given some TLC.

Apart from that godawful statue by the bank you would be hard pressed to know that Richard Harris was a Limerickman if you were a visitor. It'd be a good idea to exploit the Harry Potter connection- look at all the attention King's Cross in London gets. That's just where Harry gets the train- freaking Dumbledore is from Limerick!

Likewise, the writer Kate O'Brien's house in in a state of disrepair, and this could be turned into a museum about local writers or the arts.

Limerick City and County Council have a hell of a lot to answer for, the city and its people deserve a lot better.

Studied there but we're quite separate from the city. Most students just know the same 3/4 places in town that they end up in on a Tuesday/Thursday night after midnight. I try to go in on Saturdays for the milk market and riverfest is good.

But just the hassle you can get around town from scumbags or the ones who actually pick fights with people near the bus stop on William street. The dodgy feel in and around the station. I can see why people wouldn't like it.

The whole city just feels rundown though, went to Galway a couple of weeks ago and was shocked by how clean and nice the place is, it's like a fairytale compared to Limerick.

I have been a regular visitor to Limerick over the last three years.I've walked all over the city centre at all hours of the day and late at night and i never once had an ounce of trouble!Parnell Street is a bit dodgy but every city has it's dodgy areas.People go on about William Street but my only problem with that street is that there's too many two euro shops!I like the atmosphere on that street.I have had more trouble with drug addicts and dodgy types coming up to me asking for money in Cork and Dublin then i've ever had in Limerick.I guess it's all about perspectives.

Yes I like limerick, but hate when Limerick people get all defensive when someone doesn't like the place, I'm from Limerick and I think we have an above average amount of skangers walking around the city compared to any other city I've been to, when it's raining or dull the city centre is depressing, when the sun shines it's beautiful but don't wonder too far from the centre
