Seeing that we have do you like Dublin and do you like Cork threads up.I think Limerick is the most underrated place in the country. It's a very nice city. The georgian grid layout of the city centre is very unique. It has one of the finest riverfronts in Ireland and it's just a very nice city to wander around.Everything you want is there and i think it's a good thing that it is not as popular with tourists as Dublin Galway and Cork etc.It has a bad rep but i think it's a load of crap.I find Limerick to be the safest out of all of Irelands main cities.I find it to be the friendliest city in Ireland as well.In fact in my subjective opinion and with Cork taken out of the equation i consider Limerick to be the nicest city in Ireland.:)

I live in the city and when I leave it, I miss all the knackers.

They add a certain pizazz to the area.

It wouldn't be in my top 40 Irish cities.

The best thing about limerick is the bypass to Galway.

I was down in Limerick one day over a year ago. I thought it was a nice enough city, although I found the city centre a little bit boring and lacking character. The river front is nice though and I had a nice walk along it.

But yes, Limerick doesn't strike me as a tourist city and lacks the charm and character of a city like Galway for example.

Went out with a girl from Sixmilebridge for a few years and had a few good night's out in Limerick but don't think I'd have enough knowledge to make a call one way or the other.
Generally positive experiences for me though.

On an architectural level Limerick is way ahead of Galway and most other places in Ireland as well imo.I think Limerick is a very likeable city.I think it's better than Galway for shopping eating and drinking etc.It also has the biggest shopping centre in Ireland outside of Dublin the Crescent if bland and soulless shopping malls are your thing! There's plenty of things to do for tourists in Limerick but the city just isn't marketed very well.Galway decided to go all out and market itself as a tourist town and good luck to them but i'd like to think that Limerick is a cut above that.

It always amazes me (as a Limerick man) that Irish people (albeit in decreasing numbers) feel nothing but negativity toward Limerick.

But that same city is one of the "must visit" cities on the European Club rugby circuit...and when they come they don't stay in Galway or Cork or Ennis or Adare and get bused in on matchday, they stay right in the city centre for 2/3 days...and they keep coming back...they fill the museums and art galleries as well as the pubs and restuarantes...of course they are not exposed to Irish media, that might have something to do with it...

Limerick city centre needs serious money thrown at it

it reminded me of North Inner City Dublin in the 80's

Yes, I worked there for a few years & had many a good night out there. Crescent shopping centre is v good also with the added bonus of free parking!

I would walk down O'Connell street in Limerick at night. I cannot say the same for Temple Bar in Dublin or Patrick St. in Cork....

A county in Ireland where you just don't go without carrying a knife!

Fcuk, he's from limerick...........They're born with stanley knives in their hand.

A city of heritage and wonderful people and night life.

Limerick is OK. I used to go there a lot when I was younger. I like Dooradoyle and the Crescent but the city center is a bit on the dull side and noticeably underdeveloped. Hopefully the city of culture accolade will kick-start something good for the city but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I love Limerick .... and I'm originally from Cork! Its amazing that so many people jump on the "I hate Limerick, its unsafe" bandwagon and they havnt even been to there.
Ive known people that came to Limerick for nights out/visit friends and they had a negative attitude because of things they had heard from others, but loved Limerick once they had been there!

I go to college in Limerick so it's my second home and I love the place. Nice city, great night life, people are sound and it's a busy enough place for any young fella. The water is terrible though! And yeah I'm from Cork and honestly I'd never walk home from Cork city after a night out but have done so in Limerick loads of times...obviously there are rough areas but it's a grand little place. +1 on the fact the city needs serious investment...place looks about ten years too old. Much prefer Limerick to Dublin tbh. But Cork is in a league of it's own...obviously like.

Limerick is a great city, but having the university so far out takes from its potential.

Never was a fan of limerick to begin with, and about a month ago I'd a pretty terrible experience there and I disdain it ever since.

I was waiting for a bus on William Street late one evening many years ago and I could hear a rattling noise getting closer and closer. A young lad ran out of a side street with a stolen charity box under his arm.

It's the only place I've had something thrown at the vehicle I was travelling in (a bus)

It has a substantial looking centre but it needs regeneration.

If you haven't been for a few years, it has changed!

Massive investment along the waterfront, it really is beautiful.

Yes, more needs to be done, but overall, I like Limerick.

You can't take one incident of a bad experience and allow it to taint your feeling for a city- I've had a few bad experiences in Galway ( mugged, car side mirror smashed off by vandals who decided to do every car on the street, and another time my car broken into and the steering column broken) but I still like Galway. I lived in Stoneybatter in Dublin before it became trendy if anyone remembers what that was like and I still like Dublin. And of course, Cork, Cork is gorgeous, went to college there and have great memories.

Lived there for a few years, probably will move back there.

Lovely people, city is small enough that you can get around really easily. Some decent pubs and restaurants, and you are not too far away from some beautiful rural areas. Decent sport also, including my beloved Limerick FC. People's Park is lovely on a fine day too, with a free gallery beside it. Milk market is a nice place to wander through on a Saturday morning too.

All the shopping centres on the outskirts have hurt the city centre though. It needs a lot of investment, hopefully in the form of business moving back to the centre, generating more footfall. That would be a virtuous circle.

Thry could do more with the riverfront, especially where that old Dunnes is, and along the dock road.

Nice place, a great location on the Shannon and within a short drive of the ocean, mountains and Burren.

Btw, they are having a large festival this weekend: see http://www.limerick.ie/riverfest

I think people who slag off Limerick have not spent any time there.

While I haven't spent a lot of time there the times I've been I've loved it, and dare I say it ~ some of the best pubs of any Irish city I've visited.

When you're used to the sheer overwhelming about of knacker scum in Dublin city center then Limerick is a refreshing change.

However I'll add this, Limerick does 'run down slum' better than Calcutta lol.. When you find a run down area in Limerick it's really fecking run into the gutter.. That said I've enjoyed Limerick, really enjoyed it.

For some reason unknown to me the media has set about doing a proper good hatchet job on Limerick, its unfair & undeserved.

Is it worth traveling down from Dublin with a few mates for a piss up weekend?

It is actually. The green coach Dublincoaches.ie ) takes you there and back for €20, and the city center isn't teeming with knacker scum like you find in Dublin.

Hotels are cheap at the moment too.

Was in Limerick for a few nights back in the 80's found it dull and drab then and didn't hold a candle to Galway at that time. Know a student who was there about 10 years ago and she wasn't impressed. Heard it has improved since and must go back to see..

Oh yea, when you had to go to Salthill to find a club (in Galway) or even a decent bag of chips!.

Galway was a kip back then.

Spent 4 years in UL, there were things I liked and things I didn't like. Dublin is waaaay rougher in my opinion. I would not walk down Bachelor's Walk and I can't think of anywhere in Limerick that's that bad. Maybe by the train station but even there you don't get really hassled, except by Annie Fitz looking for chips!

Having said that I probably wouldn't ever move back. Had a tough old time in college and Limerick is kind of indelibly associated with that. Also, it's very small, and I much prefer the bigness of Dublin, it's a city city.

Limerick got a fair old doing in the recession and the city centre badly needs investment. Part of UL moving in the city centre is a fantastic idea.

People who say it's a **** hole with blanket judgement have no idea about it. Yes, there are bad areas but I really think Dublin and Cork are worse for social problems. There's some ****e that goes on in Cork which is hardly ever reported for some reason. Limerick got saddled with a name due to a minority and it's not all justified. It's not pretty like Galway and will always have to rely on the surrounding attractions (Bunratty, Adare) and rugby to draw visitors, a bit like Cardiff (which isn't a bad place either).

Also, to add, I met some of the most creative and talented people during my time in UL. Great Arts scene in the city.

I also lost a high heel due to Shtello's sticky carpets once :pac:
