But the Atkins never mentioned strength training (at least not 10 years ago) and although it may seem obvious now, to a normal joe-so so ten years ago it wasn't so much. Plus the way I felt on Atkins, I wouldn't have had the energy for it anyway. I wasn't making any claim, I was sharing a personal experience which for me was negative, how am I meant to back up personal experience?

In the research you have provided it says "We suggest that LCD refers to a carbohydrate intake in the range of 50–150 g/d, which is above the level of generation of urinary ketones for most people.", which as I have said upteen times now I don't have a problem with, its the <20g/d I find may cause problems (just an opinion).

You can back up personal experience by showing studies that had the same effect on others - i.e that a low carb diet tanked your metabolism. Metabolism is more closely linked to activity and protein has a larger themogenic effect than carbs so what you are saying isn't logical or backed up by any studies I've read.

The study i linked was literally the first search result returned and mentions that there appears to be no link with metabolism changes.

Agree that dissemination of information has come on miles in the last decade though, there was an awful lot of crap floating around before.

No it's not. Cycling faster is. All you're describing is you coping with your diet. Do you honestly not see that your athletic performance staying static but you not eating on the bike isn't an improvement. It's just you managing to cope with a poor diet. If there are no PBs there's no improvement, sorry.

I'm a powerlifter, if I switched to your diet and just went into the gym and squatted the same weight every session for a year and talked bout my improvements my training partners would have me sectioned.

I don't wish to cycle faster at the moment; please don't tell me what my goals are.
I've never cycled as far or felt stronger after, or recovered quicker.

Are you going to lecture on cycling to me as well as diet?

Once my big events in June and July are over then I will look to get quicker and target different type of HIIT training.

Do you actually know anything about audax cycling? The link between powerlifting and cycling I don't know. As an aside Jeff Volek powerlifts on a LCHF diet.(L being low and not No)

This a health & Fitness forum; I'm doing more than I've ever done before and feel better and blood markers also show improvement, but hey don't let that get in the way of your blinkered view

No I don't know anything about Audax cycling.

There are loads of low carb and no carb powerlifters. One in particular, Jamie Lewis, is particularly... fervent... in his criticism of people who eat carbs. Subsequently he has a tribe of followers, most of which he appears to be leading down the route of massive burn out and injury but he sells them copious amounts of caffeine supplements and he has some world records so life is pretty good for Jamie.

I'm not looking to criticise your goals or anything like that. You have your training and diet very dialled in and I admire that hugely. Most people wont be like you though and it just won't work for most people.

Out of interest when you move towards HIIT type training, will you keep training in a ketogenic state?

Most people fail when they don't educate themselves. The human body is remarkably complicated, but people just wish to get stronger or leaner or faster and don't educate themselves, get lost and then blame the diet/lifestyle they chose.

On HIIT, I have no idea. When I've pushed hard on 20 min climbs, I mean balls out from bottom to top, i recover fine and don't feel hunger any quicker than just going up steady. I haven't tried much short intervals but will be interested to do so at end of summer.

There is a lot of talk of getting low GI carbs in, in middle of training or event which don't interfere with fat burning(by giving an I(dirty word) spike). Attia pushes superstarch; I'd be more inclined to use nuts( I only eat real food).

To me it's a journey, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when I push up heart rate; I know of amateur racing cyclist who are doing quite well on it; carb intake has to be timed very well though to avoid dropping out of ketosis. I find a little fruit immediately after hard training aids recovery.

You should look up Volek, he is very active in LCHF research an powerlifting is his hobby.

Donal O'Neill, former founder of Gaelic Players association, filmed movie cerealkilleriesmovie.com where he also set personal bests in liftting high intensity exercise sprinting after switching to LCHF.

In general day to day living I noticed advantages which are independent of athleticism
    * When travelling being able to go many hours without food easily, so you can wait until you can eat the foods you want
    * On occasion I do very physical forestry work, handling chainsaw and lifting heavy wood. I've never felt as strong or been able to stay working without returning for food
