185 Subway stores across the UK & Ireland are to go Halal due to pressure from Muslim groups.

I find it strange how one groups religious beliefs can affect so many as industries and societies pander to them while we proclaim to be a progressive society.

Look at Good Friday here and the calls for doing away with the law on closing pubs as it's seen as outdated yet outlets can't serve the meat they want due to another religion saying so.

Another poster who believes the Daily Mail. Bless your trusting little heart, OP.

There's a big push for their "smoked back bacon" on Today FM at the moment. So it obviously isn't affecting Irish Subways.

Companies will react to demand. If enough people went vegetarian and didn't want meat products sold in their stops, and it made commercial sense, then they'ed turn "VegWay" in the morning.

Didn't take long for that,so Subway aren't going Halal??

Where in my post did I say that I believe the Mail? They just reported the story.I posted the link here to invite discussion.

Sure why not enforce Ireland's Catholic beliefs and make them serve fish only on Fridays.

You can call it pandering or you could call it Subway seeing a market.

You would be surprised how much of the meat you eat is Halal. We just dont give a toss if it is or isnt thats all.

It's merely a cynical corporatist decision to ensure they can market to a growing segment of the population. Halal butchery is (and I say this as a meat eater) barbaric, and Subway would very quickly change their mind if more people asked 'is this meat halal or not?' and then said, 'actually no thanks, I wouldn't eat that if you paid me' if it was.

minority groups seem to target issues close to their beliefs, the gay ccommunity are pretty sucessful particulary in the states, the st patricks daay parade in new york, then the head honcho of mozilla had to go, even ass the chargee agaainst him were slanted, is not one of the muslim beliefs is to conquer the world.

You know the Daily Mail is a paper for idiots when they have to summarize every article using bullet points at the top of each page. Load of rubbish.

Yeah like they have soothing mood-music so cattle can slip gently into the good night in Larry Goodman's factories.

Well, never buying there again. Let the Muslims keep them in business if they mean that much to them.

Saw this story on Facebook earlier through friends living in the Middle East. Bascially their point is they can go and buy bacon in the supermarkets and go home and cook it yet UK is trying to be pc for the want of a better phrase.

'...outlets can't serve the meat they want due to another religion saying so.'

Yes they can, but they've chosen otherwise. Anyway, according tho their website, the only Subway in Ireland that is offering Halal seems to the one on Shelbourne Road

What would they (Subway) do if people boycotted them due to animal cruelty.

Halal is cruel but of course we aren't allowed to criticise their belief system as we are then seen as the bad guys.

They should call it Muslimway. Let them at it I say, all the better for supermacs quest for world domination. Bacon & Cheese fries anyone?

So if this goes ahead we can't have a BMT?
Would this affect Italian cured meats?

Is there anything particular about Shelbourne Rd in Dublin? Is there a Muslim community nearby?

I don't know the area, just wondering

You're allowed to shop where you want. You;re allowed to criticise halal butchery if you feel its inhumane. But only if that's what your true issue with this is.

If you live in Ireland and have been privvy to the CC's influence on so many aspects of Irish society, you've already seen how much a religious organisation will be pandered to.

It's a few shops catering for their customers, not a big deal.

I presume the favour will be returned in muslim countries concerning pork products

Why? This is a company making a business decision aimed at a target audience as is their right. It's not being forced upon them by some mad mullah

It's disgusting mechanically recovered sh1t power hosed off animal carcasses anyway. What makes it Halal? Do they get the Imam to say a few prayers over the buckets of chicken paste in the factory?

    Because
    1. They are not being "forced".
    2. I have no idea where you got the Idea that Ireland holds Catholic beliefs, but in any event there is no requirement that Catholics abstain from meat on a Friday.

Well since it only applies to some of the meats I would imagine they'll be changing their supply chain for those specific meats.

I was playing Devil's advocate with that post by asking how far would the influence of for want of a better term 'lobby groups' reach in society.

We are already seeing what's happening in schools in parts of England,I hate the insidiousness of the Islamification of society.Brunei are introducing Sharia law tomorrow http://gulfnews.com/news/world/other-world/brunei-sultan-pushes-ahead-with-tough-sharia-code-1.1326334 A well educated population to be subject to archaic, barbaric rules. There are sections of Muslims who given half the chance would do this worldwide. The UK seem to be falling over backwards to accomodate some of these beliefs in a wave of PC nonsense for fear of offending somebody.

You might ask what has this to do with a shop selling rolls, but this is a microcosm of what's happening lately as we see bit by bit the traditional values being undermined & at times replaced by other influences which many see as arcane.

The animals are awake when their throats are cut as opposed to stunned otherwise.

I was using the term "Catholic Ireland",it's been used to describe us for longer than you or I have been around. You know exactly what I meant in that post so stop trying to twist it.

In Surah 5:5 of the Qurʼan, it is written: "The food of the People of the Book (Jews & Christians) is lawful for you as your food is lawful for them."

    So, what's the problem?

We're talking about an ancient book written about magic and invisible wizards dictating modern fast food decisions in the 21st century

Somehow I doubt reason is going to come into the equation

As long as they don't cut back on the number of meatballs in a footlong, all's good with me.
