Car Imported Car Clocked from UK. What should i do?

If there is a thread regarding this already i apologise, I couldnt find it.

I was looking to buy a new car

Last saturday I found a car i liked. It is a 08 Vauxall Astra UK import and I was going to buy off a small garage in Cork.

For my sanity i did a UK Vehile check this morning

I found that car was last recorded with 140,000miles in the UK but when i saw it on the Car last Saturday it was 85,000.

I do not want anyone else to get stung by this.

What should I do?

Can the gardai action this?

well tell the garage then, as there is no crime committed till they sell it.

So no point in telling guards

We can only assume that the garage may have bought it unaware that it was clocked.
I would definitely contact the Garda and let them take it from there. Surely it's a criminal offence to advertise for sale a clocked car if aware it's clocked.

..i stand corrected the law was changed in January..its now illegal to tamper with an odometer in Ireland...

the question I suppose becomes "does the garage know that its clocked", which is where if you notify them and they ignore, you could report to the guards...its a bit grey though i think..

Isn't the act of clocking itself now an offence, the law was changed last year?

Seller should be reported, I'd find it hard to believe they are not either involved in the clocking or at the least aware of it and withholding that information.

Are you sure the figure you saw online wasn't in kilometers?

The conversion is pretty close.

85,000 miles = 136,794 kilometers according to Google.

It's the other way around, the OP did a UK check (I'm presuming it still had the UK plates on) and the report showed it had 140k miles.
Now that the car is in Ireland it is showing 85k miles so it has been clocked.
I'd walk away.

Not a bad thought

However it is a UK vehicle check and it state the mileage is 139,169 and that information was correct as of last august. Also for reference the car when i viewed it displays in miles and over 80,00 miles was on the clock.

UK plates still on the car.

I will not be buying the car. But now that i have information that it is clocked i want to ensure no one else gets caught with this car.

Inform the garage and tell them you are informing the gardai and then if they sell the car without telling the new owner they are committing an offence.

There's not much else you can do about it.

Report it to the garda, or the National Consumer Agency seemingly.

more complications...you know you have to vrt it also, more cost and hassle...run away...before you buy an overpriced lemon

It would be a pretty poor garage that didn't do this check for themselves. I would imagine they must know it has been clocked

If the law has really changed, perhaps it's worth reporting.
If that change is meaningful, that's excellent but up until now the standard response from gardai was:
Have you bought the car?
No.
What is your issue?

he hasnt suffered any loss. as someone else pointed out, Tell the garage and mention you are reporting to guards also..and walk away.

That link isnt strictly true,is it? Its illegal to sell a car that you know to be clocked without informing the buyer, and new laws make it illegal to clock a car in Ireland, but surely its not illegal to advertise a clocked car (as the link is suggesting), provided it was clocked before it entered the country and the seller does not commit fraud by selling it without informing the buyer?

AFAIK the garage will need to register it and pay the VRT before selling it.
I would have to look up my VRT rules though as I am a little bit rusty on them.

Does the ad say the clocked mileage or the original though. If it says the lower of the 2 then I would assume a purchaser would have a case. OP is there any way to post a link to the ad? Might need to be run past the mods first though.

For info.

May not be the best thing to post the link on here. Info below for those asking.

- Car was titled as Opel rather than Vauxhall in the ad (Only a minor point)
- No mention was made of it being an import / being on english plates / Clocked until i arrived and test drove the car
- Only one picture in the Ad
- in the ad it states 86,000 M / 138,404 KM

To be fair the car looks in great condition, and when i drove it, it appeared solid.

My concern is that if the miles are not legit.. What else could be wrong with the car?

I would have to assume that garage is aware of checks available bringing cars over from the UK - I have little pity for the garage.

I think I will notify the gaurds are see what happens.
