Dragging this thread way off topic here, but the 400/6.6 trans-am engine, as used in the '78 trans-am, was a small block? I'd always assumed it was a big block.

    Small

That's not always how they calculate prices.

    I got quoted €1795 for 1.6 Bora and about €3000 for a 1.6 Integra.

Try this place. It was at least 300 euro cheaper when I was trying to get insurance.

I find Chill absolutely useless for quotes. The insurers actual website usually gives cheaper quotes.

I thought that if I got a full licence and wasn't 17 I might actually be able to get a nice car without the annual insurance costing more than the vehicle!

I will ring a few places once I pass the test, just having a look around online for now.

Try FBD. Seems to be the cheapest for "large" engines and young drivers lately.

Maybe I can just buy an MX-5, skip the insurance and only use it for "trackday, bro?"

Most online tools are just declining to give a quote at all.

I nearly had a row with the woman in FBD recently. The refused to insure me because of my driving history.

FBD Woman: So how long do you have your licence?
Me: I've my licence 5 years now.

    A few questions later

FDB Woman: Do you've any NCB
Me: I've 3 years named NCB

FBD Woman: "but you said you've had your licence for 5 years now; what were you doing for the other two"
Me: I never accrued a full years NCB. I was insured for portions of that year. I've proof of the 8 months in one of the years and I wasn't driving the other
FBD Woman: But that's not proof of driving history, you may as well not had the driving licence at all

So that went on and on. I got a pain in my head trying to explain that just because I had a licence doesn't mean that I've driven on the road.

She went on and on about driving history that couldn't be verified and when she said that she would have to refuse me a quotation I just simply hung up the phone. Feck that.

Not a single other insurance company had a single problem with my driving history, even obscure little brokers.

    Not ringing FBD again.

Or you can do what many others before you have done - which is to buy a car you can afford to insure and run - and THEN when you have some no claims bonus built up - get quotes on MX 5s or other nice cars.

In fairness its an mx5 not an Atari Jaguar Gti.

How old are you Brian ?

Just sounds like you came across a clown tbh. I would have just rang back until I got a non spaz operator.

Yea, I'll try them again in the future, as long as they don't have me on file as being refused.

I've never had to hang up the phone in frustration but that was the occasion

Mid twenties, 1 year named driver, driving test next month. I think it's the fact that it's a RWD convertible that's the main cause, even if it is underpowered.

Get a custom manifold and bolt a turbo on it and get a set of coilovers and it's gonna be mad.

You need 1 years ncb at least in your own name or you will get screwed as you are too much of an unknown quantity otherwise.

A lot of places wont even give you a quote if you don't have 1 years NCB, for example 123.ie, One Direct and NoNonsense.

    What wheels are they?

Have some gtechniq wheel armour on the way, to get them coated before I put them on the car. Here's hoping the stuff is worth it, otherwise it'll be a complete rip off! But MM seems to stand by it!

Who knows when the tires will arrive, still in Germany at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,729 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Going to look at a VERY cheap Fiat in a little while.
I've been spending to much time around a certain demographic.

ET40 9.5J in the rear is going to be a very tight squeeze...

You'll either need to run stretched 225/235's or roll the arches. Maybe both.

MM said to get C1 as you get more of it at a better price and it's the same thing!

    C5 Wheel Armour 15ml - €28.95

    C1 Crystal Lacquer 30ml - €54.95

Granted it's only a few € but still better value :P
