I'm getting good speeds using an Alcatel Y800Z mifi but it wasn't cheap it cost just over £50 as a refurb on amazon.co.uk but I chose it in particular as it was the cheapest 4G mifi I could find and I will use it for 4G in Sweden. Might be worth considering for anyone who wants to be ready for 4G. It came unlocked so no fiddling around to get it going. It was originally supplied for EE in the UK but no branding on it.

The wifi signal on it isn't great you need to be in the same room or the room next to it to get a signal. I haven't tested the battery life properly yet, it died on me once unexpectedly but in hindsight it mustn't have been fully charged beforehand.

I have tried two different devices and I haven't been able to connect to Tesco Mobile so far:

a Huawei K3765 stick (unlocked from Vodafone)
and a Huawei E173 stick (unlocked from Meteor)

Just wondering if anyone has got either of those to work on the Tesco network?
I tried both the tmidata and the tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com apn's. Thanks.

Not familiar with those sticks but have you roaming switched on? Apn is tmidata for mobile broadband.

I like you location. Martha and the Muffins. :)

I have roaming switched on, but I'm getting a message 'please insert correct sim' on the Vodafone dashboard. Does that mean the device is still locked to Vodafone?

More than likely it is still locked. Have you any other non Vodafone sim?. Just to to see if the Tesco sim is faulty(unlikely though).

Cheers, yeah I just tried another sim and it looks like it's still locked. I'll have another go at unlocking it. Thanks.

Can you get these data sims in store yet, or are they online only?

Never mind. I got one in Tesco Arthur's Quay, Limerick this morning.

I bought one in Maynooth on Thursday 20th. and saw them in Mullingar, & Tullamore stores also last week, surprised if they are not widely available in store at this stage.

Here is what the package looks like....

I got the Tesco Broadband working on the K3765 stick (unlocked from Vodafone) in the end, thanks for the help.

I downloaded the Huawei Dashboard and changed the settings to tmidata and 'WCDMA preferred', it's working well now.

Don't suppose anyone knows if there are any advantages for customers who have a staff privilege card when topping up their mobile broadband account? Something like bonus credit would be very nice indeed.

This is not true, phone sims from most MNO/MVNOs will work in MIfis/dongles.
I've used a tesco Sim in an e5221 and E355's.

Does it work the other way around does anybody know? That is put a data sim into unlocked phone with the apn = mobile wifi hotspot? I have a acer Z3 that has the same speeds as the tesco mifi.

    Thanks

Logically, theres no reason it shouldn't, Sims are pretty basic items at the end of the day, and these Data sims are just the same as voice Sims with the Voice and SMS disabled.

I tried regular Tesco SIM before I got my hands on the data only one. What I found is that the Data only SIM is achieving speeds of about 10 meg whereas I would be lucky to get 2meg with the voice SIM in the same location.

Interesting, I used an O2 data sim and a tesco phone sim in the same location and with the same dongle, whereas the O2 sim was slightly faster, it was negligible, less than 1% of a variance.

Curious to know if any data SIM in an unbranded or unlocked USB SIM adaptor/stick will work if attached to an android device (phone or tablet) using OTG cable ?

    Anybody ?

I tried to get a sim for this in two Tescos (Parnell St and Temple Bar) and both stores say they didn't even know Tesco did mobile broadband :)

Haven't seen any poster ads in stores for this either.

Are the sims only available online or something?

I got one in Tesco Nutgrove, maybe they only have them in the larger stores. They charge you for them in the stores (I think it's about €2.50) but they refund you if you buy €15 credit in the same transaction.

You can order them online for free. Edit apparently not (see posts below)

The free ones are voice/text/data. The €2.50 are data only.

The data SIMs can only be bought in stores that have a phone shop, ie a dedicated sales person/stall. Wilton in Cork sell them but Douglas dont. (or at least didnt)

So I can't pick one up from a smaller shop?

You can pick up normal or micro data sims in Tesco Wilton, Douglas and Midleton.
If you want a Nano sim you have to transfer over to one from a normal sim - I did just this today. Only the bigger stores such as Wilton carry nano sims, but the girl at the counter didn't know you could transfer over.

Not true. I picked up a data SIM in Arthur's Quay, Limerick and it doesn't have a phone shop.
