Weight machines v free weights

    I know that general wisdom is that doing free weights is more beneficial than using weight machines... But I don't know why? Can anyone explain?

    I'm no expert on it so someone will probably come along and explain it better. Basically if you are using a weight machine like a smith machine you are only using the muscled needed to push the weight up and down. If you are using a barbell on a weight bench instead you are also using muscles to balance the weight and keep it steady, you also need to exert the same power for each side to lift it straight. That's my understanding anyway

    machines are not natural movements, free weights are
