Cancelling Gym Membership

    Hey!

I hope this is the right forum for this (apologies if not)

I signed up to a gym earlier this year with the intent in doing classes...

I've done this on a pay-as-you-go basis before but the all inclusive membership was a good deal so I decided to sign up!

I took part in a few, they all seemed a little over-subscribed based on my previous experience and this was fine until the last class I took...

I got really dizzy and felt very sick and uneasy, tried to catch the instructors attention but she avoided making eye contact with me (I'm in no way a paranoid person, she really did). I went over to the wall and drank some water, waited for my circulation to come back to normal and then faked the rest of the class until I could just get out of there.

Afterwards I had some blood tests and I'm really severely anaemic which is why I had this experience. So, I'm working on this now and I thought I could go back and just do Pilates or some of the lower intensity classes since I'm paying for the year now anyway.

Since this happened however, especially now I am aware of my anaemia I really do not feel confident going to this gym. I paid my subscription last month even though I didn't attend and friends advised me to just cancel my direct debit. I emailed the gym in question and let them know and I got a reply saying I'm liable for the arrears (9 months membership) or I can transfer the membership to someone else.

I explained my experience and also pointed out that I genuinely don't feel confident in the supervision provided and I wouldn't feel comfortable passing my membership on to another person who could potentially have the same experience as me.

I'm just wondering does anyone know what my rights are here? I really don't want to do anything that's going to affect my credit rating but I just feel a little too vulnerable attending this gym given my anaemia and tendency to get weak or dizzy spells with exertion

    Thanks

What's your doctor said on this?

Can you ask then to put a pause on your membership until you get yourself sorted? Presumably you're going to be treated for the anaemia, and once you do, it won't be an issue any more?

Check the contract with the gym. There's usually a period of notice that you have to give.

Anaemia sadly isn't something that goes away, it can improve though!

My point is, I really don't feel confident attending this gym in general after my last experience. I'd happily go back to the gym where I did the pay-as-you-go classes once I get my iron up though as it was definitely a more professional set-up.

My doctor has advised me to keep working on my iron levels and if I keep getting the readings I have been getting they will do a blood-transfusion. Going to the gym shouldn't really be on my radar at all.

    Really depends on the gym.

Ask to speak to the manager.

Just cancell the dd and do not contact the gym , that's all. Gym contracts are not really legally enforcable....they could try but...
