I'd also like to point out, in my defence, the cables are too short to do any meaningful tidying. Braided cables are on the cards along with a after market cooler and some nice LEDs (nothing too tacky).

Wasn't as difficult as some made out. I forgot to route the Mobo 24-pin and 4-pin under the graphics card so that had to come back out, other than that it was a smooth build.

    How is the 770?

Not sure yet, haven't had a chance to really push the system. Best I can give you is that it is an enormous step up from the MacBook Pro she was using :p

Up til the weekend I have been holding onto my playstation 3 for the sole purpose of playing fifa. Which I am fairly addicted to. Its just that I have always played it on the PS so never really considered moving to PC.

My controller gave up on me last week - she had a good life, so while waiting for a new one to arrive I bought Fifa 13 for eur10 on origin just to tide me over. Honestly, Im don't think Im going to go back. Game play is excellent, the speed, the graphics - everything. Took a few games to get used to the xbox controller but after that fine.

PS is just a blueray player now.

lads would 300 watt be sufficent for just the mobo, 2 SSD's and a hard drive?

Yep. More than enough. Not many good 300w units out there. Not that it will matter too much considering how little juice your system will draw, but it's good to have a quality unit.

Super flower have a good 300w bronze rated unit.

There's also Corsair's VS350. Can be found pretty cheap.

No im thinking of getting a 1300w PSU, 1000w might be used up some day by 2 gpu's so I wanted to see was 300 sufficient for the rest

No it won't. GPUs are getting more and more power efficient all the time. For a GPU to use 500W, it would need three 8-pins. On the reference card. You will never see that.

An 1KW unit will be all you'll ever need for two GPUs, barring some massive technology shift.

    R9 295 X2 requires 8-Pin PCI-E connection and 500w

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

The R9 series draws a stupid amount of power in general, and the 295 is a dual GPU card. Are you really going to run four-way Crossfire?

Listen, if you want to plan for the worst case scenario ever and never have to upgrade, by all means, buy a 1300W PSU or whatever, but the fact is you'll never use it. You buy that PSU now, and a 295 (probably not), and that's grand, you've got room for another one.

Next year NVIDIA launches the 980 and performs the same as the 295, but uses half the power, and has some other features that I'm sure NVIDIA will come up with between now and then. Are you really going to grab another 295 and deal with horrible scaling instead? Of course not, you'll get a new card. It'll be more power efficient, and perform better.

=> 1300W PSU is not needed.

hmm you make valid points Serephucus, its highly unlike I would get a 2nd 295 too. I was thinking of getting the 1300W as future proof though but with how everything is getting energy efficient, you maybe right and think a 1000W would be sufficient

I agree. A 295 system draws about 700w under maximal load.

To be fair the new CF scales really well and outperforms nVidia. At the cost of wattage though. A 295 draws an absurd amount of power but matches or slightly outperforms SLI tis at high resolutions due to better scaling and the 512 bit memory.

A dual 290 system under water is very powerful.

Do UPS deliver on Saturday? My 780 is en route from Tamworth since early in the morning and I'm pretty certain they wouldn't deliver it this late in the day.

Looks like Maxwell is getting a delay/revision which also may affect AMD's future plans. The problem is being reported as the TSMC foundry and the 20nm production process. Either production or cost issues, not really clear yet but nvidia seem to be pointing the finger at TSMC. One article seems to suggest that Maxwell may be released on 28nm instead like 750(ti),have to wait and see. If it turns out to be true id hope we would see AMD and Nvidia refresh there lines on 28nm,id be partial to 2 x R9 380's for €500 at the end of the year, can only hope:p

A few articles i was looking at for anyone interested

So no new GPUs ( proper new Gpus, not just rebrands ) in the near future. Not liking it and will push back 4k becoming mainstream.
