    Hi guys,

    great thread, love food!

Has anyone made peanut butter here? I was told there was a blender you can buy but forgot the name of it - it's the mammy's birthday soon and every time she visits the USA - she brings tonnes of the fresh stuff home - thinking she could do with a new blender - but for the life of me - cant find anything online because i can't remember the name of it.

    would appreciate any guidance

    On the couch/table thing:
We pretty much always eat at the table. Very occasionally, if it's the kinda meal you can eat with a spoon, it might be on the couch but generally that's not a position I like to eat in.
Growing up, we were rarely allowed to bring our dinner in to the telly (Mork and Mindy being one of the exceptions).

Made the sauce for the pizza last night. Am hoping the crushed garlic and passata will cause the earth to move a little bit faster this evening.

On the subject of spuds, anyone got a recipe for garlic potatoes?

Now there's something I thought only happened to people in hot countries!

Sadly not. :( Try and locate the nest.

Just wondering can anyone help with a recipe for something with sweet potato and butternut squash that isn't soup? I was thinking maybe a casserole with pearl barley but I can't for the life of me think how to start it

    The flipping what!!!

    The ant nest.

It might not be in the house though, the ants might have found a way into the house from outside, that happened to my sister. But a house I lived in a few years ago also had ants and the nest was behind the bath cover. You'll need to destroy it - if you can ascertain where they are coming from, that is.

Didn't tidy up before going to bed last night, lifted gross, sticky board I'd carved chicken on up this morning to put it in the dishwasher - ants. Dozens and dozens of ants. Now there's something I thought only happened to people in hot countries! I may have shrieked like a cartoon princess.

We had them last week. They have a nest in our garden and when we had the door left open for a bit to let the dog in and out a few of them became enamoured with our brown food bin and moved in. Scrub everywhere with a solution of borax powder, it's the only job for it. The worst part is spending the next week jumping at the sight of every fleck of dirt cos you're sure it's the colony starting up again.

Keep an eye out; ants follow scent trails so they'll be walking in single file from wherever they live. Once you find that out you can get rid of the source and blast the trail with bleach or something.

Ray D'arcy was talking about the ants in his kitchen last week

I've made myself a containment tent of bleach soaked sheets and am sitting here with 99 dialled on my phone, I'll hit the other 9 if anything crawls in here with me looking for crumbs or more chicken grease.

We have an indoor cat and no doors in the main living area of the house so I need to find ant p'ison that isn't also cat p'ison

I like to roast both, particularly the squash after I've dusted the pieces with ground cumin & coriander (& maybe chili if I want a kick). It goes really well with roast lamb. I've also had it with cous cous & grilled lamb chops that I've rubbed with Harissa.

Don't think it really deserves it's own thread - I have a load of chicken left over from a roast, what should I do with it?

Never made peanut butter before but possibly a magimix food processor? I've seen blog posts in the past where the blogger used one to make peanut butter

I always use it in a risotto, but you could use it in anything really, a curry or a pie, etc.

Vol au vents all the way in this house, or pasta bake. Not very exciting but goes down a treat!

2 huge thumbs up to a chicken risotto. I'd also recommend a Nigel Slater satay chicken sandwich

We had a similar issue last year with an ant invasion and an indoor dog which ruled out most poisons; I read that cinnamon was a great natural ant repellent and is not toxic for cats and dogs so I sprinkled some ground cinnamon around all doors/gaps in the wall. It really worked but was quite messy, so later I got a small bottle of cinnamon oil from a health food store and put drops of that down hey presto no more ants!

Something really quick would be nice. Like coming home from work and having something within 15/20 minutes.

re: ants. Apparently ants follow the well-worn tracks of other ants by scent [remember how they walk in straight lines?] so the thing to do with your cinnamon oil is this:
First wash the floor where the ants have been seen, and then rub or smear the oil, with a cloth, in radiating streaks or curves from the place where you think they gain entry. Sort of ever-increasing rainbow shapes, as it were. Then they can't find their way in or out by smell.
    Tell us if it works!!

Chicken fried rice? Fry peppers, onions, cooked chicken, tilt pan and scramble an egg over the opposite side of the pan to your veg & chicken, throw in cold, cooked rice and mix together. Add soy, chili, whatever flavourings you like.

Or simply fry the shredded leftover chicken to crisp it up a bit and eat it in a roll or sandwich with garlic or normal mayo, salad & cheese
