Russia to move on Moldova?

Russia is beginning to make worrying noises about the Trans Dniester region of Moldova. This is a sliver of land on the Eastern side of the Dniester river which has a different ethnic population to the rest of Moldova.

Considering its done the same to Georgia and Ukraine its getting worrying - it already has troops in the area.

The west took the military option off the table. Putin reads that as "do what the fsck you want, son".
I'd be worried about the Baltic states if they weren't in NATO, think it's Latvia that has a 20% ethnic Russian population?

Its bascially eu's fault, for pushing so close to Russia's borders. If they kept a healthy distance none of this would have happened.

Its actually 27% "offically" but there are also belorussians who are very pro-russian as well.

Moldova has not had control of Transnistria since 1992, and elements of Russia's 14th Army have been permanently stationed there for over two decades. The EU has always considered this an illegal occupation but has never done anything about it.

it does seem like the response to the Crimea annexation was so pathetic that Russia realises it can do whatever the hell it want's and that Europe will just moan and cry about it and refuse to sell them apples.

The idea that eastern europe should have been left under Russias sphere of influence is retarded though, and explicity counter to the EUs raison d'etre.

Russia doesn't quite get the whole "let nations vote to join our union/federation" idea. Russia takes by force and rules with an iron fist. Democracy is weakness.

Nukes are precisely why Ukraine is in the position it is. It was persuaded post-91 by the EU and Russia to give up it's nukes and that if it did, they would recieve a guarantee that their borders and status as a soveriegn would remain inviolate.
But just like with Czechoslovakia in 38, the west are rowing back on their promises.

Putin wants to re establish Russia as a great power. He will exploit Russian populations anywhere near his current borders to expand them. He wants to make Europe economically a vassal state. You are looking at a man living in 2014 with the mind of Attila the Hun. He is as close as you will get to having a country run by a wild animal with the cunning, instincts and inhumanity of a wild animal. He will keep pushing until he is stopped. It can't be by war given nuclear weapons so it will have to be back to the Cold War. Any further invasions, annexations, reintegration of Russian people must be met by closure of European borders to all Russian travel. Closure of their embassies, expulsion of citizens from Europe. They'll turn off the gas alright. But you can never pay blackmail.

The problem is that we get 25% of our gas needs from Russia. That can't be replaced overnight. So, if we do that, we have to be willing to economically cripple our selves in the short to medium term.

I presume by us you mean the EU? Most Irish and British gas comes from the North Sea/Corrib Gas.

If Russia does pull the plug, there's plenty of energy available from Norway and North America that will fill the gap if the need requires. Russia will find it very difficult to sell its gas elsewhere in the short to medium term though. The EU does need to start seriously pushing renewable energy and that may include more nuclear.

I'm not so sure. I heard he had very compromising pictures of Francoise Hollande and Angela Merkel allegedly buying chronic in a dodgy suburb of Brussels. I reckon he'll keep pushing as long as he can ensure their silence.
