But Kagawa and Mata give me some hope.

Good post Jonny. But just wanted to pick up/add on this, Mata and Kagawa are both young, and will be coming into there best years, I hope our team will be built around them. Things are looking better for Kagawa in recent weeks, partly because RVP has been injured he's been getting more time, but he and Mata really do seem to be on the same page and maing the team tick. I've more hope for Kagawa than I did a few months ago I really thought Moyes had just given up on him and he would be out in the Summer. I don't think that will be the case now.

Nice piece Jonnyfingers you've done well since you left the Rats. I know we should get behind Moyes but he is so defensive and the opposite of what we stand for and unfortunately City and Liverpool are playing and winning with the style of football we were famous for, I wouldn't be sorry if he was gone in the morning.

Kagawa was the shining light last night, when this guy plays in his preferred position he has such composure on the ball under pressure. He essentially carried 'Carrick' no pun intended.
With Mata and potentially Kross beside him providing the correct support it's a formidable midfield for the future. Moyes has got to make sure he holds on to him in the summer and it's a must that he starts every game for the remainder of the season in the correct position.

Everton will provide a sturn test considering they pressed Arsenal for the ball in midfield so quickly, somebody has to have the ability to release the ball forward at a canter which I believe he has this ability in abundance.

Can somebody confirm this but from what I can remember only 3 times this season has he started in his preferred role and those three times were the 4 - 0 demolition of Leverkusan, the 4-0 Demolition of Newcastle & Last night??

That Mourinho thing is nonsense. He went barrelling down the sideline fistpumping and kicking imaginary balls to celebrate - you can practically see the moment about two thirds of the way down the pitch when the hamster starts running in the wheel and he realises he has a chance to pretend all that's on his mind is a tactical masterstroke so everyone can see what a guru he is.

He then whispers in Torres' ear... what, exactly? He's quick to tell us in his post match interview that he had his team drilled for every eventually with one, two and three strikers all week because he wants us to acknowledge he's a pre-match guru as well as a during the match guru so really, he ran all that way and dragged Torres out of the goal celebration to say "remember Friday when we were pretending to be a goal up and I put you defending - do that now".

He's a great manager but he's got some serious personality issues, between attention seeking and an overweening need to be praised - that sprint down the line was just a vaudeville encapsulation of them.

I would tend to agree with most of that, however you're underestimating the effect of him "appearing" to give tactical instructions would have, even if he gave no such instructions. Firstly it wastes a bit of time between the goal and the kick-off, time the opposition then have to think about how they might not win this game. If the opposition players think he's giving his team some tactical instructions they may start to believe that Chelsea are going to be switched on to defend this lead and some doubt might creep into their mind. The Chelsea players will see that the manager seems to be trying to focus their minds on the job ahead and they may start to think about that rather than celebrating the goal further. And I'm sure he would have given some tactical instructions, even if the thought to do so just occurred to him on his little run down the pitch.

I'm not for one minute suggesting that Moyes should have done anything like this last night, but it would have been enough to call over one of the senior players and give him some instructions to relay to the rest of the team. I always think that if someone like Roy Keane was on the pitch he would have shouted at everyone to get their head's straight and keep things tight for the next few minutes. That didn't seem to happen last night.

After seeing the tweets from Reus and shaw the last couple of days I would think it unlikely that we will be signing either. And kroos would insane to leave Munich.
    Shame.

What a load of tripe. Tactics after scoring a goal - really? The Chelsea team is full of winners both past and present, they have enough experience to knock over a bank as a team and the last thing they needed was for Mourinho to give them anything at that moment in time. These are seasoned professionals. Mourinho just did what he typicaly does, screams ME ME ME and makes it about him.

As are Uniteds and there is simply no excuse for allowing a goal within the first 60 seconds of any restart. Your shape is reset, your team are all behind the ball. It is unforgivable at any level really.

No I think Reus has his heart set on a switch to barca at some point. Shaw May or not move, but not to united.
I can't see us getting the players in that we need.
    Humbug!!

We're **** because Vidic, Evra and Carrick are past it. Fletcher is only back after a serious illness. Valencia, Young and Cleverly have been atrocious this season (Although Valencia had a superb game aginst Bayern last night), Fellaini has been shoehorned into a Defensive Midfield role when he'd excel as a box-to-box midfielder (in my opinion) and as a result has been poor for the majority of games and finally, RVP hasn't nearly been at the same level as last year.

All of that plus Moyes being out of his depth is why we're ****. It's not just the manager.

This. The team was in decline since 2008. The decline went too far. We play awful football, have for a couple of years. It's a long way back now.

A lot to be fair points to Fergie.

He left a tough job but he also (and the below are at a very layman and obvious level of simplicity):
    (a) Suggested someone that does not seem up to the task and won't ever or is taking too long to come up to speed
    (b) Never pushed the board & Moyes to make the slightly radical changes early doors (panic buy Fellaini for that money was just silly)
    (c) Never ensured a smooth handover or even a migration of his backroom staff and the staff Moyes brought in.

I like Moyes, but he doesn't cut the mustard nor does his staff, it seems.
I've no doubt he'll improve but I don't think it will be enough.
If this is a long project then as much as I'd like Moyes to pull it off and be back where we were or better in 3-4 years, I just can't see it.

Captain Obvious ^ comments from myself but I think after all the regurgitation and pessimism on here it all comes back to whats black and white.

Forget about boyhood fan Bayern are going to win that league for the next 3 or 4 seasons without breaking sweat. I think him leaving is a big possibility this season to be honest. I don't know if United can tempt him but now is the time to go for him.

The same with Klopp he is playing for second place the next few seasons. Taking over United with a big budget to build his own team could be a big temptation. Again i think the Madrid and Barca jobs could be available this summer so we might struggle to get him.

On Shaw i really fancied him to go to Chelsea but i am not so sure now. I can't see him displacing Azepeculita or whatever his name is any time soon. Moving to United being guaranteed first team football would be a big plus for a young player. It is probably more likely we will pick up Contreao.

Klopp will prob end up at Barca.

I'm sure Moyes can get us back in to the top four next year or the year after but I doubt he'll ever be challenging for the league or europe.

Definitely agree. When RVP plays it has to be at the expense of one of the other three. Also I don't think RVP has too many seasons left. It's terrible to say but I'd rather not rely on RVP, starting next season, and build the team around Kagawa, Mata and Rooney. I'm not entirely sure Moyes is up to that particular challenge, but as I doubt he'll be shown the door anytime soon I hope he gives it a good go at least (paraphrased I hope he doesn't **** up so badly that the next manager can't build on what's gone before!).

I also wouldn't mind if Moyes was gone in the morning, but as I don't think that will be the case there's not too much point in complaining about him for the next few months. He'll get the full season at least and the club can judge his performance then and make a decision. We can mostly decide on that now though

Community Shield - Won - Somewhat Positive
Premier League - Outside of top 4 (most likely) - Big Negative
FA Cup - Fell at first hurdle - Negative
League Cup - Semi-Final - Usually a positive, failing to make the final downgrades it to a negative
Champions League - Quarter Final - Positive for me. Good run, beaten by a better team
Transfer Signings - Fellaini and Mata - We've been screaming out for years to sign some midfielders and he brought in two we would have been delighted to get last season. So that's mostly positive for me. A negative is he failed to strengthen some positions that became weak as the season went on, but in fairness to him most of us didn't recognise those weaknesses as crucial before the season started.
Playing Style - Big negative for me for most of the season. Mata coming in and Kagawa getting more game time gives me hope going forward so I'm willing to give a little more time.
Training Methods - hard to judge as it's hard to quantify. We've certainly suffered a lot of injuries and started the season quite slowly, similar to how Everton have done in the past.
Media Performance - Negative. Still doesn't seem to have the confidence necessary of a United manager. Too self-depricating for me and seems to say the wrong things sometimes, even if they're true! But I don't really care about this as long as we're getting results on the pitch, however we're not and you'd have to question how much of that is down to the players wanting to play for the manager.
Adaptability - has had to use very different team selections due to injury and play against different styles and for me he hasn't shown a great ability at getting the best out of his teams. He seems to be at home with defensive and counter attacking football, which is fine if he can get results playing that way as it can be an ugly style. However we're not doing that at the moment and we've looked terrible at times so it's a negative for me.
Room to Improve? - That's the big question. Has Moyes shown anything to suggest he can learn from this season and improve? Possibly. He seems to have recognised frailties in the team without fully addressing them. At recent times we've played some good football so maybe he's open to adapting his style. Our away record is very good, our home record has been shocking though for some reason. On the other hand he has been stubbornly loyal to some players and overlooked others, but possibly he's already decided that he's going to bring in his own players instead of using what's already there. From the outside looking in you'd have to say you wouldn't be confident with Moyes planning the long-term future of the club. I can give him until Christmas to show signs of something but beyond that is asking too much I think.

Overall - it's been a poor season. Moyes looks out of his depth and he has a huge challenge to rebuild an ageing team this summer. He has a long way to go to rebuild the faith of the fans worldwide and performances and results will need to drastically improve. However he got rid of Anderson and signed Mata so it's not all bad!

    :D

We can all speculate on what would have happened this season with Fergie. I don't think we would have been challenging for the league but i would have been sure of top 4. Who can blame him for retiring on the back of winning a league and allowing the new manager build his own squad.

I am in no way defending Moyes because he has failed to get the best out of the team. But looking at the defence that from Christmas on last season conceded the least amount of goals.

Evra well he was a bit more solid.
Ferdinand in the team of the year was very good.
    Vidic was fantastic last season.
Rafael had his best season only 2nd behind Zabaleta imo.

    Look at this season.

Evra has been terrible this season.
Ferdinand his legs are gone he has been awful.
Vidic has been injured and been poor by his standards.
Rafael niggling injuries all season and well below last seasons form.

Carrick had his best season for United last year followed by his worst this year.
RVP was so important last season he has been well below form this season.

If we want to fast track a return to the top the board needs to put this fabled warchest in the summer. Get over to Juve and slap 50m on the table for vidal. Make big bids for the likes of Coleman, Mangala, Shaw, Kroos, Reus. We're too bloody cautious in our approach to players.
Otherwise it's a long haul rebuild. Maybe look to develop a young team with the likes of Wilson, Powell, Janko, and Januzaj as part of it.

I think keane hit the nail on the head when he said moyes would have been shocked by how bad things actually are behind the scenes.

So we're in the position where we say all of our faults are based on how Fergie left the club (aging squad, behind the scenes, bad football)....but could the logic not then go the next step and say if he mucked up all those things, maybe he mucked up the manager choice too?

(*Not saying for a second, though, I believe that line of thinking at all in terms of how "bad" things were left for Moyes; just saying that the line of logic follows as such if you are trying to argue that point....*)

I don't believe it's tripe at all. Never underestimate the stupidity of a professional footballer. If a team were so good that tactics were not needed then what's the point of having a manager then? Just to select the team? Chelsea had three strikers on the pitch who were told to go and score a goal. With that goal scored the team needed to revert to a more defensive formation. Do you think Ba, Eto'o and Torres would naturally decide between themselves which one of them should play where in a defensive formation? Not a chance.

United's case was different. There was no need for a tactical change, just an instruction to get their shape set and do what they have been doing since the start of the game. Somebody should have taken ownership of that, either the manager, captain or any player with some common sense. Unfortunately that seemed to not happen and Bayern waltzed through us.

Still can't shrug the feeling that if the players took a bit more responsibility, took charge of the situation and showed their class, this season would be looking alot different.

I mentioned after the RVP post match outburst away to Olympiakos, that he was forgetting how Uniteds fortunes in the three matches previous where in his doings.

He buries his open goals against Fulham, Arsenal and Olympiakos the whole mood around the club would have been different. While there was always grumblings, there was no intense focus on Moyes if I'm honest, before that run of Fulham, Arsenal and then Olympiakos where the heat really turned on.
A bit of composure, class and responsability of a senior member of the squad and the outlook is totally different.

There is no doubt, and I won't debate it anymore, that Moyes has made some blunders this season, mainly in his media facing and choice of words, but also in team selection at times. But I can't fault his approach to this tie. The side put out was pretty much EXACTLY the same as I'd posted in the hours proceeding, even sighting Smalling would be prefered to Ferdinand to give that side of the defence stamina and pace.
Evra's inclusion was a suprise considering what Buttner had done, and it was all to predictable what happend. You can actually go back and find that post, and read my words at how Evra will get sucked into breaking forward, and struggling to get back into position. There was numerous times last night where he just went walkabout and I'm now convinced the issue with Evra is his legs and they are just at that age, not down to a failure in attitude or lazyness.
Early in the match he made an incisive interception in the box from Muller, while the move was flagged offside, his brain was in one with his legs, he knew the danger and he got himself into the position to snuff it out.

For the equaliser, you can see he identified the danger, but his legs just didn't get him there infront of Mandzukic, a relatively slow player, but with clever movement he doesn't get credit for.

For the third goal, it was laughable and indictive of the problems Moyes has inherited and had to deal with. Robben doing what EVERYONE knows Robben will do, cut in side, and keep cutting util he fires a show. Evra let him go by without a whimper, and Vidic noticably lost pace over 10 yards before a last gasp outstretched leg caused the deflection.

There is alot of experience in that team, ALOT. Fletcher, Carrick, Rooney, Vidic, Valencia,Evra. These are all guys who have played CL finals, challenged for titles, played on the big occasions. It was utterly embarrasing to see an equaliser that quick. You could see Fletcher being called over to the sidelines by Moyes after the goal and it was very audible on the stream I watched " Get the ****ing ball back and keep tight". Like he should have even had to EXPLAIN it to the team.

The gameplan was obvious, it was good, and I wouldn't critise it. While it was heavily defensive, some pragmatism is required to appreciate your going against the best team in Europe that if you go swashbuckling football against them will gobble you up. This is a team that beat Barcalona 7-0 when they tried to go toe to toe. We had a genuine outball with Wellbecks pace, Rooney was dissappointing for reasons well known, and Kagawa was brilliant in possesion bringing a calming prescence. (And by the way, few times, shot past Bayern players like they werent there).

I just feel it's in someway being the story of the season and how the smallest of margins you would expect experienced pros to box off, end up costing us big time. Moyes went with a plan, that plan obviously worked and one of the best teams in Europe looks clueless at how to break us down. And after getting the goal, like in the first leg, where the plan has worked and now you need to keep that resolute defending, you have a brainfart in less then 25 seconds.

If Moyes is removed from his post in the summer there will be joy and celebration and good riddance to a manager who in many eyes has dragged the clubs reputation through the mud this year. But personally while I couldn't overly complain as the buck stops with the manager, I won't ever shake off how I feel the clubs predicament has been caused by our so called senior players, completely abjecating responsability, and failing in those fine margins that could have made this year so different.

    This is obviously correct.

People were saying earlier this season Januzaj was better this year than Messi and Ronaldo at 18 FFS. In reality he hasn't done as much this season as Raheem Sterling did last season before being taken out of the action by Rodgers, and will be doing very well to have as good a second season as Sterling next year.

Matagawa and Rooney is three quarters of a potentially exceptional front four but Januzaj is literally nowhere near the level where people should want him as the fourth.

I agree with the argument for keeping Januzaj as a squad player for a while, rather than planning on him being a fist teamer. But this skeptical view that you and Liam O have taken of him is way over the top.

There is no chance that what Liam said - "Some good attributes but not much more at this stage" - is a correct description of Januzaj this season. He has shown himself to be an exceptional talent for his age, nothing less.

He has had 14 starts and 12 subs this year and has done well. Giving him the same again (or a bit more if he really kicks on) next season would make sense. Taking him out of the limelight, which presumably means giving him fewer games, would achieve nothing.

There's any amount of examples of boyhood fans moving to other clubs too.
