Does RTE1 HD have enough HD content to qualify being carried on Sky? Pretty sure Sky require a certain number of hours of HD programming content per day/week to qualify.

It wasn't an issue when they first carried RTE Two HD, was mostly upscaled SD at the time

I think that the bulk of the programming on both RTE One and Two is in HD. Put they are very bad at marking the HD programmes as HD on their listings. Is it for financial reasons. It may had applied for grant aid from some source and would not qualify if there is too many "HD " programmes. A very good indication of a programme is in HD is the promo before hand being on the HD version of the channel.

    I don't understand what you're saying here?

Well I am not aware that RTE has applied for any grant aid. As I said in an earlier post about the HD programming I was surmising the grant issue. Have you any other reason why RTE is so bad at marking HD programmes as such on their listings. As a rule most studio based programmes are up scaled SD. The opposite is true for programmes shot outside the studios.

Studio based programes are SD because it'll take time for them to upgrade the facilities for HD due to the lack of cash.

The only grant aid for programming that I can think of would be the BAI's Sound and Vision fund, I assume all this programming is now shot in HD by default - http://www.bai.ie/?page_id=92.

I think the news studios etc are all still SD but the foreign imports are HD with Eastenders etc. along with sports events(just not the studio presentation). Also any of the dramas such as Love/Hate are shown in HD if they are filmed in HD.

Love/Hate was shown on Rte One before it went HD

They also repeated the first few series on RTE Two HD last year

Will RTE 1HD just appear on Sky without any notice some day soon, or will there be a well trumpeted fanfare weeks in advance?

Wondering how much importance either RTE or Sky place on this coming to pass?

It will need to be tested first. When that happens I am sure this place will light up like a Christmas tree.

It's in Sky's hands, no doubt RTÉ would like to see it there.

RTÉ are running a promo ad for RTÉ1 HD atm where it mentions that the channel is carried on Saorview, UPC and eVision with the respective platforms' logos at the bottom of the screen, it might be a little nudge to Sky to say you're missing from this bit of free promotion.

or an excuse to put the price up

    Damn these teasing adds :(

I have BBC One HD but not RTE One HD  and I don't even pay for the BBC TV license…

Who do you blame for that situation?

    Are you referring to me?

I'd say its Sky dragging their heels?

Sky can make it happen if they really want to. Either they are not bothered, or RTE One doesn't have enough HD content to satisfy their EPG rules. That's my opinion!

    ^^^
I think Sky say RTE haven't provided or contacted them regarding RTE 1 HD. I'm not sure what RTE say, but probably that Sky haven't spoken to them.....

But being as Sky have to pay the carriage for RTE, then adding it is an associated additional cost for them, so you'd wonder how it would be in their interest. I'd have thought RTE would want it available across all platforms, so I'm tempted to point the finger more at Sky.

But then you'd wonder how Sky agreed to carry RTE 2 HD with the extra cost - although no doubt it's factored in our bills.....

So no one is any the wiser.

they provided it just in time for the Olympics because they were being bombarded with rte2hd now on saorview for free ads. Its amazing how they bleat on how much they do for Ireland yet are the only provider without the national station in HD.

Surely it's in their interest not to have competitors with better channel options for fear of subscribers jumping ship?

I have a new crazy theory...

I wonder if RTE are playing hardball. Sky pay the uplink and encryption costs for RTE. Maybe this agreement is up for renewal or doesn't stretch to include RTE One HD. By having this HD channel on other platforms, and plugging this fact, it puts pressure on Sky to carry it. Which gives a favourable advantage to RTE in any negotiations.

According to the chat over on the Sky Forum, there may be reason to be optimistic:

    'Soon' means nothing really.

RTE said this two months ago to the day...
RTE 1 HD will become available on the Sky platform in the future, but as yet no date has been confirmed. Please keep an eye on the Sky website. It will also be widely advertised when the time comes.

Just telling you what I read on the Sky Forum........

I emailed RTE directly and asked them the same question as to when RTE 1 hd would appear on Sky and they said that it would be coming very soon. And emphasised the word VERY in the email using bold font. So hopefully not to long now.

I think rte's definition of soon is not the same as most peoples. :pac:

I dunno about that... If you're in a UPC area, I'd imagine you'd be with them for both TV and internet. If you are not in a UPC area then you'd probably be with Sky (if you have paid TV channels). So putting RTE 1 HD on their EPG isn't going to gain many more subscribers.

But people (like me) will cancel Sky and get RTE One HD via Saorview.

Why are you with Sky if your only interest is RTÉ

The vast, vast majority of people have Sky for reasons other than RTÉ. Whilst it would be a benefit to have RTÉ One in HD if it was the only reason for cancelling I have no idea why anyone is still with them.

In other words you (and people like you) would be in a very tiny minority.

I'm not with Sky. Cancelled it some months ago, mainly because I get more of the channels I do watch (RTE, BBC, ITV, C4) for free via Saorview/Freesat.
