RTÉ ONE HD on Sky

So we have RTÉ TWO in HD, when will ONE come along? Will they be able to put it on the existing RTÉ transponder or will they need a new one? If they got a new one it could house RTÉ ONE, and TWO in HD along with TG 4 HD. I would have said TV 3 HD could go there too, but the likelihood of that happening now seems even lower than before...

Its not properly launched yet so some time after that happens I would say. January would be my guess

It's due to launch before the end of the year, but on Saorview first ( hence the start of Mux 2) Probably on Sky early next year.

Saorview's Brian Geraghty said on Morning Ireland the day Mux2 was launched that RTÉ1 HD "was coming in the New Year"

    Ah.

I thought it had now appeared on the Sky platform (however unlikely).

The thread title should have a ? at the end.

According to the technical page on Aertel with regards to rescanning your tv for Saorview it mention that the launch would be later this year.

This re-scan is to facilitate the launch of RTÉ One HD later this year. Viewers will not notice any significant change following this re-scan however failure to re-scan will result in the eventual loss of service.

Since August the official sources are saying "later this year" and "in the New Year", so in the coming months then.

They did test some HD content in the last two weeks on the RTE One HD channel. But it looks like up scaled SD until the official launch on a date to be announced. Please give us a Christmas present, full HD programming on RTE One.

Love/Hate (although it was a let down) looked quite good last night. I don't think it was HD, but as far as upscaled SD looked, it was very very good.

Some chance, we haven't even got that on RTE2 "hd" yet, aka the Childrens Channel!

Just before Pictorial Weekly came on, the announcer mentioned ''now on RTE ONE & RTE ONE HD'' i was thinking where is it?

    Did anyone else hear that?

It officially launched on Monday. Sky need to lift their EPG freeze before it can launch on Sky, but it'll get there eventually.

Considering RTE One have broadcast zero HD content so far (as far as I am aware), Sky may have a problem listing it as a HD channel.

They might bend the rules for PSBs, but in general there needs to be a minimum amount of HD content. I agree with them on this. Simply upscaling everything and sticking a HD logo on screen does not make a HD channel.

I was looking through the Saorview EPG last night and we in for some Christmas treats in HD on RTE One. There is quite a few programmes and feature films marked for HD over the next week. There are a couple of feature films for RTE Two marked for HD. So it is well worth for Sky to take on the HD version of RTE One.

Yip, Shrek Forvever After due to be HD as is a Harry Potter film after that on Christmas Day.

With the number of films on over Christmas, they'd probably have come close if not exceed the quota for at least one of the requirements to be an HD channel on the EPG. At least for the 3 month period quota, if it had launched beforehand.

Though, I'm sure RTÉ and Sky would have a reason to fulfil the special requirement area if there isn't enough HD content acquired to meet any of the quotas, which RTÉ Two HD must have had, or still has even, considering the amount of HD content which appears on it.

Any idea when we might expect to see it on Sky Epg

Checked with sky on an online chat, they had no info.

That's a pity guess we will just have to wait.

no sign. but rte seem to be upping the pressure by advertising its available on all platforms except SKY daily.

Firstly, is that not just advising viewers - a fair amount (a majority?) of whom would be watching via Sky - rather than pressure?

Secondly, even if it is pressure it's a bit disingenuous if Sky could turn around and counter that it's not even on their own satellite platform :)

Sky Ireland MD, JD Buckley was on The Pat Kenny Radio show this morning and when when asked about RTE OneHD joining the Sky platform said he hoped to have it as soon as possible.

fair point but it does encourage some of them to ring sky and ask them why cant they get it so that leads to pressure...and rather than say its not on their platform they should be providing it.

Does RTE1 HD have enough HD content to qualify being carried on Sky? Pretty sure Sky require a certain number of hours of HD programming content per day/week to qualify.

It wasn't an issue when they first carried RTE Two HD, was mostly upscaled SD at the time

I think that the bulk of the programming on both RTE One and Two is in HD. Put they are very bad at marking the HD programmes as HD on their listings. Is it for financial reasons. It may had applied for grant aid from some source and would not qualify if there is too many "HD " programmes. A very good indication of a programme is in HD is the promo before hand being on the HD version of the channel.

Well I am not aware that RTE has applied for any grant aid. As I said in an earlier post about the HD programming I was surmising the grant issue. Have you any other reason why RTE is so bad at marking HD programmes as such on their listings. As a rule most studio based programmes are up scaled SD. The opposite is true for programmes shot outside the studios.

Studio based programes are SD because it'll take time for them to upgrade the facilities for HD due to the lack of cash.

The only grant aid for programming that I can think of would be the BAI's Sound and Vision fund, I assume all this programming is now shot in HD by default - http://www.bai.ie/?page_id=92.

I think the news studios etc are all still SD but the foreign imports are HD with Eastenders etc. along with sports events(just not the studio presentation). Also any of the dramas such as Love/Hate are shown in HD if they are filmed in HD.

Will RTE 1HD just appear on Sky without any notice some day soon, or will there be a well trumpeted fanfare weeks in advance?

Wondering how much importance either RTE or Sky place on this coming to pass?

It will need to be tested first. When that happens I am sure this place will light up like a Christmas tree.

It's in Sky's hands, no doubt RTÉ would like to see it there.

RTÉ are running a promo ad for RTÉ1 HD atm where it mentions that the channel is carried on Saorview, UPC and eVision with the respective platforms' logos at the bottom of the screen, it might be a little nudge to Sky to say you're missing from this bit of free promotion.

or an excuse to put the price up

Sky can make it happen if they really want to. Either they are not bothered, or RTE One doesn't have enough HD content to satisfy their EPG rules. That's my opinion!

I think Sky say RTE haven't provided or contacted them regarding RTE 1 HD. I'm not sure what RTE say, but probably that Sky haven't spoken to them.....

But being as Sky have to pay the carriage for RTE, then adding it is an associated additional cost for them, so you'd wonder how it would be in their interest. I'd have thought RTE would want it available across all platforms, so I'm tempted to point the finger more at Sky.

But then you'd wonder how Sky agreed to carry RTE 2 HD with the extra cost - although no doubt it's factored in our bills.....

So no one is any the wiser.

they provided it just in time for the Olympics because they were being bombarded with rte2hd now on saorview for free ads. Its amazing how they bleat on how much they do for Ireland yet are the only provider without the national station in HD.

Surely it's in their interest not to have competitors with better channel options for fear of subscribers jumping ship?
