Pierce Purcell

Bumping to update. Forgot there was a dedicated Purcell thread so had put it on inter-club thread. Woodstock won the Munster final yesterday in Limerick GC. Great win. Serious golf apparently.

Think you forgot Kanturk there.,..they were 3 up with 3 to play in the deciding match and lost 4 holes in a row

Thats a fairly bold statement there Jul3s..I actually played Kanturk during the year and happened to be talking to a member about how well they do in interclub comps. He had a theory that Kanturk have small undulating greens so the members are particularly good at chipping and putting...that was his theory anyway.

Also are you saying that handicap minding is exclusive to Kanturk interclub team members? As regards selective memories for rules well that's another matter..I think you would want to be backing that up

I don't think the GUI want to pull at that particular thread.

As a general point though, and I know nothing at all about the clubs in this year's finals so its not aimed at them particularly, its virtually impossible to win a mid handicap event like the Pierce Purcell unless your team is very well..........."prepared", shall we say, from a handicap point of view. Some of the good teams are a couple of years in the making. Sending out a team of genuine 14-18 handicappers in the latter stages of the PP is lambs to the slaughter.

Whether that's a reflection of good ole Irish cute hoorism or not, I don't know, but its definitely real.

Slightly ot but I was just wondering how do your clubs go about selecting their team for the pp? Went to trials last year at my own club only to find out I was wasting my time as the manager was going to pick more or less the same team as the previous year ie going on reputation rather than form. Not to mention the few bandits thrown in for good measure! I feel that I am genuine 12 handicap player but I feel up against it straightaway in the trials cos I'm up against lads who could easily play off single figures but are (bizarrely! ) playing off 12 or even 15 in some cases. The whole thing is a bit demoralising really ...

Not sure about the age aspect but I think the handicap limit starts at12 and the 2 combined must be a minimum 27...

That's basically what I'm asking in my post above. In my club it all seems to go on reputation which is disappointing to say the least. As far as i know most team managers like to pair 12 and 15 handicappers together. I'm getting the impression though that it's one big bandit competition! !

Depending on how big your number of eligiable players is I would have thought that getting on the a Pierce Purcell team with a handicap of 18 would be tough, the best you could hope for would be a partner off 12 then you would be a combined 30 and in theory you would be giving 3 shots to your apponants (of course everyone plays off scratch)

I had the same issue when playing a number of years ago in Hollystown, was officialy off 18 but a run of results had me down to 14 and the team manager would not even consider me for the panel, said that last years handicap was a truer reflection of my golf ???

Went on to win the club foursomes match play for that year and defended it succesfully the next year, not been picked was a huge motivator.

Good luck getting on the team, interclub is such good fun.

Members of the teams committee go out and play rounds in February & March with potential team members and they are invited on to the panel, also a sheet is put up on the notice board inviting any other interested members to sign up to the panel.
Trials take place in April and early May, team from what I have seen in the past is picked on form.

Unfortunately that's exactly what the PP is once you get to the latter stages. You need at least 3 or 4 guys who can pretty comfortably play to their handicaps or better, rather than this notional idea of needing to play well to play to your handicap once every 7 games or whatever it is.
