Shatterbashing is fine so long as none of it goes on the ceiling.

Yeah, he used his xray vision to see it was harmless before he called it in.

he is a convenient scape-goat. I heard him speak 2 or 3 times ever... briefly. He seems like an inoffensive guy, and is supposed to be highly intelligent... that is all I know about Alan Shatter. If he resigned tomorrow I can safely say it wouldn't effect me in any way.

I also think that this Shatter, phone bugging, withdrawal of disgusting remarks business, is a storm in a teacup, purposefully manufactured by the government and the media to take to spotlight off the Anglo trial, which appears to be getting little or no coverage.

Yeh I don't understand the venom either. I understand dislike of him, but intense vitriol... just seems like bandwagon-jumping.

Also, I disagree with Israeli occupation of Palestine and detest some tactics of the Israeli military, but I cannot understand anti-semitism. The Israeli state/military is not "the Jews" (some of whom also disagree with the occupation; plenty of whom are not fanatics like the loons that post here) and anti-semitism was around long before Israel.

I was just watching it live, through a link on the Indo website. It is little more than a media circus.

Nah I doubt there's a conspiracy like that, and it is pretty serious stuff - Shatter was out of line, just not deserving of the extreme abuse.

Why would the government use its own minister to deflect attention from the Anglo trial? And why would the media?

Oliver Flanagan would be spinning in his grave at such acts of intolerance :pac:

It's interesting that the whole anti-semitic angle seems to be taking a front seat to the fact that fake-anthrax was sent to him.

As the anglo trial can only be reported on and not speculated or commented on till its over, that's hardly suprising.

The anthrax was fake. The swastika - sent to a member of the tiny Jewish community in Ireland - was real.

The swastika was a bleedin' picture of goons from the 40's wearing a swastika.

If I was sent a package containing an unknown white powder and a religiously offensive photograph, I know which one I'd be more concerned about.. but Enda Kenny and the media seem to think that the photograph is of most concern.

Apparently I'm fierce intelligent. I wouldn't put me in charge of the department of Justice on that basis however! :pac:

Because Independent Media (Today fm, Newstalk, Indo newspaper, etc. etc) was bought with a loan borrowed from Anglo, by a certain close friend and backer of the government. There was a significant write-down on the same loan, to the tune of €100 million.

And we can only surmise that the main item of concern at first was the unknown white powder - before it became known that it wasn't dangerous. And then we are left with the fact that a member of the Jewish community in Ireland was sent a photo of people wearing a symbol associated with a movement that wanted to wipe out the Jews.

I think many things about Enda Kenny, but I'm not sure he is Machiavellian enough to decide to run with this as a political football while his close friend and political ally watches on.

It's a disgusting action, and its reporting in the media is justified.

    Here ya go: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/the-anglo-trial

The media don't want to prejudice the case. So they report what was said in court. That's a rather more grounded and cohesive narrative than one involving some grand overarching conspiracy.

I jokingly and flippantly mentioned Oliver Flanagan a few posts back, but Enda Kenny was opportunistic enough to personally pay tribute to perhaps the most anti-semitic man in elected Irish history. In 2005 he honoured him at a special event.. and spoke very highly of him too by all accounts.

Flanagan (and his legacy) is something that many in FG still hold in high esteem.. so you could forgive people for being cynical when a guy like Enda comes out with a load of spiel about how FG have historically been supportive of any particular group.

He did make a political football out of it today. Why else would he bring it up in the Dail just prior to a discussion about the minister and his department? Surely people aren't still that naive about Irish politics?!

Well Denis O'Brien has an interest in Independent News & Media but his radio portfolio is Communicorp - I don't think they're all the one.
Today FM covered the Anglo trial latest in the news today. If there was a ban on criticism of Anglo on Today FM, a big chunk of Ray Darcy's show would be different.

yep, I know it has been in the papers every day for the last couple of weeks, Im following it. But at the same time I cant help noticing that it appears as a sub heading on the dailys, and in the Indo in particular an article about the Anglo trial would appear in the morning on unison.ie main page, and by the afternoon it would be gone without a trace.

Im not saying the media are completely ignoring it, they seem to be prioritizing other stories (which to me are of far less magnitude than Anglo)... it makes me wonder at the timing of this whole phone call taping, Garda commissioner retiring, minister for justice no confidence bolleaux that we are being told is of way more importance, and seriousness than the shower of fcukers in Anglo who have sunk this country into deep debt for the next 20 years.

The Anglo trial was to be one of the most significant court cases this country was to ever see.... it is getting a lot less media attention than most of us would have anticipated,... wouldn't you say?
