Absolute madness. I've seen no frills but that is off the scale. Ryanair seemed to have little to no presence at all according to that video! There was one guy there who apparently said or did nothing. Then the pilot on the intercom once very early on. Beyond that, the police having to break into the terminal to let passengers in?!

There is no frills and then there is having a planeload of your passengers effectively imprisoned in an airport late at night because they can't take off nor can they leave the damn airport due to lack of manpower! Dreadful.

I hope Essex police fine them for wasting police time too :D

I assume you mean fine the airport authorities and ground handlers. I am sure there will be many questions asked of both the aforementioned parties.

    Yeah, and the airline.

I'm astounded someone didn't activate the slides before then, and f*** the consequences. At least if they jailed you for it there'd be air and water, and more space.

Because, despite popular belief, the majority of low budget airline passengers would prefer to call the police than get arrested themselves :P Good for them.

Shannon to stansted this morning big que formed about 45 minutes before they left people into the plane.

For what. You have a seat what's the rush. Good ole Michael o Leary has us programmed to hurry up and wait.

I enjoyed them all scurry onto the plane to get their pre selected seat

Yeah its the same with Aer Lingus as well.

The passengers on my last Ryanair flights did this as well.

I much rather chill with a tea or coffee reading the newspaper until about 80% have boarded and then join the queue.

Only the first 90 people onboard are guaranteed to keep their cabin bag in the cabin. Subsequent bags may be tagged and put in the hold due to lack of space in the overhead bins. Perhaps this is the reason people still queue like dopes.

Still, I agree, Id be chilling in the bar until the "final call" announcement.

Ya it's not a seat they are Q'ing for its
    probably bag space !
We fight a daily battle with carry on bags !!

They should make it a rule that only "proper" cabin bags can go in the overhead lockers (and properly stowed sideways) and all "soft bags" (or at least all handbags) and coats etc. should get squashed under the seat in front. There's really plenty of room for the cabin baggage but the space under the seats is generally wasted.

It's been my painful experience that people in general travel with WAAY to much luggage, most of which will remain untouched for the duration of whatever visit is being made.

That has been the rule for as long as I've worked there! The boarding PA asked people to place all handbags etc under the seat in front of you. Each double hatbin has space for 5 standard carry on cases, wheels first, as the bins are sloped at the back to accommodate them. The exceptioni to this is the forward ones, and row 14. People are reluctant to place handbags/coats/laptop bags/duty free etc under the seat in front of them, it's a constant battle during boarding to ask people to cooperate, the 90 bag rule has been on godsend for us on board!!

(Until you get the one person who HAS to have all his 3 bags with him and stands and argues despite the fact their bag has been yellow tagged and they're literally the last person to board the aircraft and the flight is booked at 187, thank f**k for the decent passenger who boarded first and offered to put his bag in the hold to stop the shouting, so thank you 28D whoever you were!!)

the amount of people that are queuing still, is unbelievable.

Oh my god I soo feel your pain! Only we don't have a 90 bag rule! Wish we did ,but I agree people don't want to put their small bags under their seats unless they are in the exit row then its a huge inconvenience to them! Typical!! And in the middle of it all you have someone standing there waiting on you to find a space for their bag! :/

See I'd be pure ignorant there and make him pay the excess or else get him to leave the bag behind. Just out of pure pig ignorance.

I'd only be delighted to have my bag in the hold. Don't have the drag it up and down the numerous stairs and escalators in stansted.

P.s I love the new system. Two flights today and I got emergency rows for both legs. Just offered my services as "chief emergency door opener"

My legs didn't know what happened them wit all the leg room

Is it a legal requirement that a passenger is seated at all exits.

Any news on the cabin interior refresh/redesign that they're rumoured to be rolling out?

The current interior is not what you'd call pretty with the bright yellow backs on the headrests.

I'd imagine it'll take some time for people to get out of the habit that they've gotten in to. After years of conditioning to que early to get seats together etc it'll likely take a long time for people to get used to the idea that they have an assigned seat. Many still do it even with airlines that have always had assigned seating.

Not starting a Aer Lingus vs. Ryanair handbags at dawn scene here, despite my best efforts with the simplicity of the question :p

Why would Ryanair have the 90 bag rule where Aer Lingus don't? I wonder as on busy flights they both put the extra stuff in the hold so two different approaches. Very open ended question as I can only speculate.

At my airline its down to cabin manager discreation ! If the bins are full we will stop allowing bags in the cabin

It's got to be about punctuality. This rule gives pax a reason to queue up like they did pre allocated seating thus preventing slow boarding due to people showing up one by one. Also from a practical point of view. There simply isn't enough room for everyone's cabin bag in the 737. Generally I find people have more cabin baggage on Ryanair than other airlines. I don't think it would be an exact science. They won't cut off the 91st person. It will probably from around the 140th person or so.

I'd speculate they want to identify the issue (by counting) before it occurs and causes delays.

Don't be telling everyone about that now! I've taken 7 flights with Ryanair this year, and probably 15+ last year and have been in an emergency exit seat for every one of them, and am yet to pay. I had a foolproof plan before they brought in assigned seating which was working a treat, now I just wait until there's about 5/6 others left, and walk straight down to either row 16 or 17 and as long as there's more than 6 seats free, hop in. More often that not, the entire rows are empty. God bless Ryanair business class!

On the other hand what else are people supposed to do? There is not a lot to do in plenty of terminals so you might as well queue as you are just standing around anyway.
