What were you expecting to get for them? Was it worth taking the day off work? :)

I figured I would have hit €780 last October.
They cost €180 in feed and dosing from October to March 01. €780 plus €180 = €960.
I figured €1020 was minimum I would sell at to put a few bob in my pocket for wintering them, otherwise I would have just wintered them for the next guy.
Hey ho, let's see how it goes.

You were expecting 3/kg, it happen all the time that as finishers we have to take a hit on cattle. Most finishers are at best breaking even this year most are losing 50+/head. Lads that bought bulls last fall may be taking 200/head loss. You were breaking even.

You must have done no costing or assumptions on spring prices just like now. You are assuming that the lad that was willing to pay 1K/head for 345kg heifers was going to make a profit. To break even you will need them to gain 1.1kgs/day from now to Christmas. That is exceptional weight gain, a kg/day from now to housing, at late September and 1.4kg/day over 80 day finishing period.

Heard something about trade is up and a local man said it happens around this time of year as farmers want to buy stock before the tax year is out to avoid paying tax

It normally picks up this time of year when abit of grass starts growing. I hope that man you were talking to is right. Weanlings lost group last week according to the farming indo this week. Mine would be very strong weanlings so I might get out alright.

What's the best midlands mart to sell wenlings in yer opinion? Roscray, mountrath, kk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,326 ✭✭✭Farmer Pudsey

Old tax year was April-March. Now as a sole trader/company you can opt for a tax year that coinsides with your start to farming/buisness. So if you started to farm in June your tax year is june-june. However most farmers that were in the old tax year may have opted to saty within that tax year. The reason if a lot of there costs were paid in Feb/March(ration, fertlizer) it might have generated a large tax bill in changiing over.

However some did and if you work as well it may suit to use the single tax year Jan-December.

    This is my understanding.

Bulls or heifers, what breeds? Haven't sold in KK but have in both ros and mountrath, it can be hit and miss, Mountrath would be better in my experience. But that was over a year ago, so things could have changed since then. Which one is nearest to you?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

In between both so neither one would be a hassle. I'm only getting back into it from near a 10 year brake from it. From e & u grade bulls would you think there is more exporters present in mountrath?
