Apparently I disagree, but I'm not sure. Great poll option :p

National planning guidelines which would govern where takeaways could set up are currently passing thorough the consultation stage with the Government due to sign off on them in the coming months

National planning guidelines exist, I'd imagine, for all types of buildings and businesses. Nothing in the article says that the 1.5km limit is included in the guidelines.

Tell you what, I'll bet 100 quid to your 1 quid that the ban never happens.

Think of it like this - how many schools do you know that are within 1.5Km of another one ?

There are about 3,300 Primary schools here , 1.5Km radius is 7Km2 area so total area 23,000 Km2 out of 70,273 km2 for the entire country.

Some are very close. In Tullamore, the boys primary school is adjacent, but separate from the girls school.

Two of the secondary schools would also be on adjacent sites, despite their entrances being located on different roads.

Even most of Dublin would have to shut its fast food outlets. The schools tend to be located in or close to the various village and town centres which make up Dublins suburbs. As are the chippers. The city centre itself has schools within 15 minutes walk of O'Connell st. Mad proposal.

Jaysus every chipper in ennis would have to shut down, four secondary schools in the middle of a town that only takes about 15 mins to walk from the the one furthest away..madness

Does anyone ever consider the inconvenience this might cause to adults? None of these measures work anyway, the little sh1ts are still getting fatter. Take away the xboxes and send them out to play (quietly). :D

If you read the article, the 'proposal' is based on 'a report'.

    It's bullsh*t space-filler masquerading as proper journalism.

If the rule pertains to existing shops then it is nothing short of cretinous.
Just thinking about my old stomping ground....let's take a stroll from Whitehall into town. We have St Plunkett's secondary school, then St. Patrick's primary, then O'Connell's. This would mean that every chipper, kebab shop, chinese takeaway, pizza place from Swords road down through Drumcoondra and along Dorset Street and trust me there are scores of the gaffs would have to be shuttered. That whole street would look like it had been evacuated.

If these schmucks are concerned about kids eating chips then why don't they just pass a friggin law stating that kids can't buy chips during their lunch break. Have Mr. Chang or Mrs. Fusco id them monday to friday between 12:30 and 1:30 FFS. And even that's stupid.
Why shutdown or bar the business?

reckon you could stretch a good 10 mins by making an elaborate rope barrier maze outside your chipper - a la customs in the airport

But you can still buy your cigs within the 1.5km radius. Phew!

Excuse my French but what a complete and utter crock of fcuking Shiite! If their crass proposal was introduced and included existing take always etc then every single chipper, take away and restaurant in my home town would have to close. It's not going to happen, ever. More bull**** proposals by Kenny & Co. ****.

I think this proposal by reading the article is a waste of time.

There are two chippers (one Italian and Chinese) and two shops that provide two deli counters in them where I live in Blackrock. I know that most local chippers are not open until the evenings but that is irrelevant.

This farce of a law if passed will cause utter mayhem for people who are working in areas where chippers and shops with deli counters are present.

They might go into them as their current workplace maybe too small and have no canteen facilities present. Those people might have the time to get up out of bed early and make their own lunch at home rather than buying it from a deli counter in a shop. Imagine if you were an employed adult working in a really small office with about 3 or 4 employees in total and you have no canteen or kitchen facilities and you have to share space with your colleagues to eat your lunch.

It could be worse if you had your office located in a rural town and it's located right beside those chippers, shops and schools. It would be turned into a ghost town with zero life in it. The only place buzzing in the town would be the pub. That is the only place that could possibly be a field day for adults.

I don't think kids will be allowed go into a pub during school hours though when unsupervised & wearing their uniforms. That is a different story altogether.

This government has some gusto for ruining people's lives in Ireland.

    Misleading headline OP.

If you read the article, you'll find that the government 'considers' and 'reportedly thinking about' a ban.

"A coalition of health groups want to make outlets at least a 15-minute walk away for pupils, according to a report."

No mention of what report, by whom, when or anything that might identify it.

Bullsh*t article to bait the 'Nanny State' haters.

It's sadly indicitive of how our government thinks though.

It's also instructive concerning how utterly redundant and stupid that some of our very well funded quango's are.
Somewhere there's taxpayers money paying for a politically stuffed board, 'expert reports' and studies to churn out this guff, this is where your hard earned cash is getting spent. If you want to get annoyed about something, get annoyed about that.

Whichever quango produced this rubbish needs to be axed and the money given to a productive cause.

The government isn't doing this, it's an unnamed report asking for it

It's also, 100% guaranteed to not happen: good luck defining "fast food" in a strict, legal context.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,746 ✭✭✭Flippyfloppy

Not that I eat in any of them, but this means virtually all fast good joints in my town of population 35,000 people will be closed? Lol as if. Will they just open from 5pm onwards? Schools should all have proper tuck shops anyway it would encourage kids to eat from there.

Once you get to sixth year there's always someone who was 'kept back' old enough to drive who'll do runs to macds then walk around flaunting their milkshakes for the afternoon.

If we tie the kids shoelaces together they can probably only walk a few hundred metres...

Fat f*ckers are too unfit to walk more than that anyway apparently.

It's a pathetic joke of a proposal. Completely undoable. 1.5 K radius is an area of over 7 KM. A quick search suggests there are 30 schools in the Dublin 15 area. Lets say that half of these fall within eachother's radii completely. (Unlikely but just to bring the numbers down.) that leaves 15 schools with their own 7 KN radius. In Dublin 15 that would be 105 KM area without any fast food at all. 10 square kilometers. Idiocy!

I hate when these types of reports from doctors etc. are always one sided. No matter what the law or proposal there should always be a counter argument

    Stupid B.S. nanny state.
People slate the USA for their people always spouting about their "right to freedom" etc. but this crap would never fly there

What about establishments that sell sugary foods? Why stop at fast food?
Maybe schools shouldn't be near cliffs, rivers, lakes, a field with dangerous animals etc

I'm not saying it's a good idea at all, in fact I come from a family that owns chippers, my mum grew up in one. I'm saying that if they want to go ahead with this silly idea closing during school lunch time is a better idea than closing them completely

    From the story:
"A coalition of health groups want to make outlets at least a 15-minute walk away for pupils."

Pressure groups make impractical proposals all the time, and this is one. The Government will not do this. Honestly, people get worked up over nothing.
