Pure nanny-state mentality from our overlords and absolute bolloxology. The system is rotten to the core. Whay can't we have education instead of this "computer says no" mentality of planning laws. Like the no alcohol after 10PM rule.

Apart from this being a stupid move, what defines a 15 minute walk? Could the legislation not have been a bit clearer and laid down in terms of kilometers?

Why is this suddenly the governments job to say what kids can and cannot eat?

What about chip shops that have already been established within 15 minute walks of a school?

What does this do for potential entrepreneurs who want to build a business near a school and that premises is the only vacant one nearby?

Are you for or against this move?

I am very much against it.

I think the police should have powers to forcibly remove stool samples from children to make sure their parents are feeding them enough vegetables so yes I would agree with this but only as a stepping stone.

Would the 1.5 km be the way the crow flies or by road??

Is there any place, let alone a school,l in a built up area of Ireland that is currently 1.5km from a takeaway? I seriously doubt it.

This would outlaw the concept of a village chipper.

If we tie the kids shoelaces together they can probably only walk a few hundred metres...

    Ban billionaires

Is the crow walking or driving?

Can think of at least 4 places that would have to be shut down near my old school

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Nanny State mentality.

Easier to educate parents and children on diet and exercise than enforce this nonsense

In most towns most of the schools would be easily within a 15 minute walk of the town centre.

Will this affect chippers already established? Is the law retroactive?

    Article implies it won't
National planning guidelines which would govern where takeaways could set up are currently passing thorough the consultation stage with the Government due to sign off on them in the coming months.

So a school in a town centre would see all takeaways in the town centre shut down? Ridiculous.

Edit: If new takeaways only, it's equally redundant.

They should invest their time and energy into doing something that's realistic and practical.

Driving - it's too obese to walk.

What if the children are disabled and can't walk, surely this is discrimination?

    Misleading headline OP.

If you read the article, you'll find that the government 'considers' and 'reportedly thinking about' a ban.

"A coalition of health groups want to make outlets at least a 15-minute walk away for pupils, according to a report."

No mention of what report, by whom, when or anything that might identify it.

Bullsh*t article to bait the 'Nanny State' haters.

Don't be silly that would be the smart thing to do, this is Ireland we can't have that.

Just watch the sales in segways and electric mobility scooters RISE!!!!

This has to be bull, nearly every fast food shop would need to be closed down in the city centre

So rather than educate parents and kids about nutrition, close all the local take aways? Will this also apply to the school cafeteria, the stuff sold in mine was all muck. What about shop delis, will the sale of wedges and breakfast rolls be outlawed?

a good portion of dublin city center is within a 15min walk of schools so dont see it as being feisable, one school about 5mins from the ilac center
also 15mins as an old granny walks or 15mins as a kid rushing to the chipper walks, big distance gap there

Don't allow secondary school goers up to a certain age leave school premises until going homing time, put healthy eating facilities and maybe entertainment facilities on site....

Just make sure they can't open during school hours. I'm struggling to think of a single chipper that is not within 1.5k of a school.

You'll see I acknowledged that a number of times in my posts.

A lot of chippers only open in the evening anyway. Primary school children cannot leave the premises now, and a lot of secondary school kids are not allowed off premises until they reach 5th year, at that stage I think they're old enough to choose

Nah 15 minute walk is only about 500m for the fat kids :pac:

Completely insane. They use the same rules for some drug crimes. And in cities with high population density this more or less covers the bulk of the population and area.

Think of it like this - how many schools do you know that are within 1.5Km of another one ?

There are about 3,300 Primary schools here , 1.5Km radius is 7Km2 area so total area 23,000 Km2 out of 70,273 km2 for the entire country.

What if they decide to build a school in an area where a chipper has been for 20 years? Would this "fast food" outlets include the likes of Spar, Centra, Teso deli counters?

    Very well put :D

There are 3 chippers in my town, two near the primary and one near the secondary. They have been here for years. I acknowledged that I don't think the rule is retroactive, but if it isn't, which wouldn't surprise me in this country, then they will all have to shut their doors. One of the chippers has been there since the 50's. They'll probably stop new ones from opening and put some levy or extra tax on the already existing ones.

What about Indian / Thai / Chinese ?? They sell health food too (or at least in some cases).

Wouldn't it just be easier to make it illegal to serve anyone under 18 in a chipper as is the case with alcohol in pubs?
