Just how reliable are those s60s and s80s in 2.0t, d5 and t5? Theyre cracking cars for that price it looks.

My mother has had two D5 S60s, each for 4 years, each with about 300,000km when they were moved on.

Never a bother with either one of them.

She's on her third one now. :pac:

The S80 has the same diesel engine I believe, would there be much of a difference between both cars?

The S80 is a bit bigger and a bit more luxurious. Never driven one but i'm sure the D5 engine is just fine in it. 182bhp and nearly 300ftlbs of torque :)

Volvo did have issues with ETMs in late 90s/early 00s

They did fix the issue around 03 - but the nature of the changes mean they can't be retrofitted to an earlier model - from what I recall - the ETM function on the fixed models - is carried out by the main ECU.

They did modify the orginal flawed ETM - and it used to be possible to get them rebuilt in the Uk - not sure if it still is - BBA are the companies name afaik.

Also I don't know about the 2.0 t - but on the D5 and T5s the auto boxes aren't the best from what ive read.

Advice ive read - is go manual instead

Btw - the D5 never had the problematical ETM

Oh and theres something about the dash electrics as well - but they did fix that like the ETM issues on later models.

They are however from what I can see - pretty reliable despite the above

To put in all into perspective - they were the workhorse for traffic cops in the Uk for a good few years in T5 form

The boxes are fine if looked after. The problem is if people believe this "filled for life " rubbish. The oil needs to be changed . Just like any oil, it degrades.

its an aisin warner box that was used by Toyota too.

There are fewer cars that i can think of wanting less than am Auto Fabia Saloon!!!!

As for the S80, my brother has a 2003 D5 manual with 200k miles. With the exception of routine maintenance, I think he's had to replace a cat due to a rock or something going through it and bushings in the front suspension in the 9years he's had it. I drove it from London to cork last summer and few machines would hold a candle to it for comfort.

Good few months of NCT left. I think we had a similar ex-Garda Mondeo posted here with a similar reg.

I'm still getting over the shock that the Guards are given 1.6 Liter Mondeos to carry out their duties.

I was stopped by them only recently in a diesel Avensis estate.

Are they not 163 as well as the S60?

I think it was upgraded from 163 to 185 round 2005/06. New model can be specced with 215hp I think.

Yeah, mines 03 and it's 163. Still plenty of poke, averages 47/48 mpg, and fully loaded.

Ive had 2. A 2.0 and a 2.5. Both Auto. A manual box should never have been put near that car. Cloth seats either (the safrna ein general rather than the one in question). The 2.0 is underpowered, the 2.5 (5cl Volvo unit) was just right for the car.Never should have sold that 2nd one :(

May have to get another one and I happen to know where theres a well looked after , low mileage 2.5 going for about 700. Havnt talked to the guy in a bit but it was there a few weeks back. Must get on to him.

The cloth interior in the Safrane my brother had was quite nice tbh.

I think your right though - leather suits them a lot better - however that's far from been something unique to the Safrane.

Nice cars tbh if you get a good one - my brothers though was pretty reliable in all fairness.

Don't think much went wrong in the 60,000 miles he had it
