No one will probably read this, but, for me, the best band of the last ten years has been Midlake. Most people I meet don't know who they are.

I would suggest a Welsh band called Hybrid if you're into electronic music.

Their music is used in Top Gear sometimes as well.

That's awfully close minded. Some of the most iconic music has been made electronically. Doctor Who theme anyone?

The Doctor Who theme wasn't made by computer, it was created in 1963. No synthesizers back then.

I like music played by real instruments.. You know, not made by a computer.
A computer is an instrument. It still has to be played; a musician still has to input the melody/sounds to it.
Ugh. Music snobs are actually sickening.
When they're being music snobs rather than simply expressing personal preference of course.

Saw them live a few years ago. Brilliant.

Got to listen to it all and just chill out. Actress has a pretty distinct style though, won't gel with everyone. I'd say love/hate.

It was made through meticulously cutting/pasting tape reels and use of signal/noise generators and to be honest, has the same principles as making music on the computer and is very much electronic. The later incarnations then made heavy use of synthesis, particularly the Peter Howell version, which I would argue is the finest of any of the theme tunes. Delia Derbyshire was very heavily involved in the progression of electronic sound as we know it today, along with the rest of the Radiophonic Workshop. Raymond Scott deserves a mention too.

It's his style, his tracks sometimes have this unfinished harshness to them, but it's definitely deliberate. I didn't get it at all at first but listened to a few of his tracks and it clicked. He's got this whole little world going on in terms of sound, something akin to Laurel Halo. Hazyville is worth checking out. Think his style of mixing does turn off some people though.

Yeah the harshness was the thing I liked about it, it was a cool contrast to the soft melody mixed underneath it.

Electronic instruments go back as far as the 1920's.

Indeed, parts of this were made as far back as the 50's!!

Even before this, electronic music had been in development for a long, long time.

I was always a melody based electroninc & dance music enthusiast but got completely fed up of the samey commercial Tiesto stuff over the last 15 years. Youtube opened my hairy eyeballs to a whole world of fab music that most people never heard of. Heres some artists id recommeded for those who have similar interests...

Lone - Galaxy Garden (One of the best albums ive ever heard)
Plaid - Whites dream (song of epic proportions) and loads of other tunes
    Bochum Welt
    Casino vs Japan
    Drexciya
    Ceephax
    Boards of Canada
Yimino (Songs like Auad, Firen, Imp etc)
    EOD
    Ochre
Aphex twin - Surfing on sinewaves, selected ambient 1 & 2 albums
    Dan Curtin
    Ulrich Schnauss
    Bent
Balil - Merck (epic tune also)
    Global Communication

You mean an Ondes Martenot? That's more electric than electronic. Electronic would be more transistor era.

I used to be a music snob when i was about 17. Now though i don't feel the need to be. Let everyone listen to what they like....

except Justin bieber and one direction. Liking that should be illegal.....

I don't think anybody here is saying "you're not allowed to like x".

It's hardly snobbery to recommend an artist you feel deserves more listeners either. It's what fans of all mediums do (be it music, books, film). I just reject this idea that somebody deserves to be insulted for having an informed or possibly contrary opinion. That ****e's so childish and the people who do it show themselves to be more intolerant of other people's tastes than those that they call snobs/hipsters.

    http://www.last.fm/group/Boards+dot+eye+ee

can be useful for finding music similar to what you like, or finding people with similar tastes

I'd count it as an electronic instrument.

I like music played by real instruments.. You know, not made by a computer.

You mean you like music played be people using real instruments, and you don't like music made by people using computers. Because instruments don't play themselves and computers don't make music on their own.

Also, a lot of music software is just digital reproductions of analogue instruments, i.e. 'real instruments.' I respect everyone's taste in different music, but you just sound like the world has passed you by. There's scarcely a band on the planet right now that doesn't use 'computers'.
