Has anyone played Towerfall: Ascension yet, 2014 best reviewed game so far, been looking forward to it since I saw it on the Ouya, but other games have to come before I am able t play this I am afraid such as Dark Souls 2.

    xrsc9eG.gif

It has no online play, but has up to 4 player local play and from videos I have seen it looks a blast.

Naughty Dog Explains PS4′s CPU, Memory and More in Detail and How They Can Make it “Run Really Fast"
Memory fragmentation is one of the worst enemies, because it causes a game to run out of memory a lot faster than it normally would. Naughty Dog solves that by custom-tailoring memory allocators to match the software’s allocation patterns.
The studio also uses explicit memory maps in their engine, that tells at any given time where the memory is being used and what kind of memory it is.

There are 8 CPU cores, that are “higher quality more powerful processors than what you have on the main CPU of the PS3,” and they’re organized into two clusters.

Gregory also explains that the GPU is “more powerful than it’s necessary to render graphics at 1080p at 60 hz” and that the idea of the designers of the PS4 was to give extra GPU resources because it’s “incredibly good at doing massive amounts of parallel processing” and they envisioned that game designers are going to take advance of that processing to do physics, cloth simulation, and fluids and more on the GPU.

Quite a good read and makes you excited to see what Naughty Dog is gonna be able to do this gen, you can read the whole article here http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/11/naughty-dog-explains-ps4s-cpu-memory-and-more-in-detail-and-how-they-can-make-them-run-really-fast/

They basically confirm that games only have 5GB of RAM to work with too - meaning the PS4 OS is taking up 3GB. Hopefully they optimise that soon and reduce the overhead.

No online seems like an absolutely baffling decision in today's world. Looks like a load of fun but there is no chance I'm buying it until that is patched in.

Sony’s VR tech will be revealed at GDC
Sony will reveal its Oculus Rift-beating VR headset at GDC next week, according to developers familiar with the tech.

A prototype is already in some thirdparty developers’ hands, who have told us that Sony’s VR headset is far superior to Oculus Rift’s first incarnation, though that is expected to even out a little with the arrival of Rift’s new, more advanced Crystal Cove devkit. They also said that there’s little software to speak of currently, but they expect to see something from one of Sony’s firstparty studios at GDC, even if it is just a tech demo.

There’s also no pressure on developers from platform holder Sony to adopt the tech; indeed, the studios we spoke to were excited by the technology, but questioned its viability as a platform. The cost of VR game development and its niche appeal means that many developers will wait and see how the Sony-authored experiences fare before committing to VR game development in earnest.

Yep. Not bothering without online play.

It does not bother me, I am one of the odd ones who have never used a console to play online since the Dreamcast, its quest mode will do me just fine, but I can see already a lot of people looking for a online mode.

I'm sure quest mode would be decent but I was watching a stream last night on Rev3games and it looked like a load of fun playing deathmatch and even quest mode.

There would be chances of having a few lads around to play co op but in general I'd be playing online.

In fact I was even playing dead nation online with a friend and said I'd pick Towerfall up until he said there was no online... so disappointed.

To be fair, the game seems incredibly fast and twitchy, to the point where even a split second of lag would destroy a game. Can imagine any independent developer struggling with the networking resources necessary to implement online effectively.

I welcome more developers focusing on local multiplayer, a sorely neglected area over the last few years. Some games are destined to always play best with friends in the same room.

I welcome it too and enjoy it when possible but overall that is far too small a market for a developer to focus on. I'll be delighted if the game sells well but I think there will be a lot of people holding off on purchasing the game for the same reason.

Its not about optimizing to reduce the 3gb. Atleast someone from sony said in an interview last year, how they reserved a certain amount of ram with the os for future features for the PS4. to keep it future proof for whatever apps or features they might want to add in down the road.

True, but their RAM reservation would need to start big as they would not have been able to go bigger later on. As the PS4 life-cycle goes on, they should be able to start making improvements to their RAM management and reduce their resources footprint.

Actually, on your point, the VR tech I mentioned above is rumoured to be one such feature they have reserved resources for.

Can't say that I'm too bothered about online play either. Local multiplayer is king and it's a shame some developers are abandoning it.

Mercenary Kings Coming to PS4 on April 1st

In this action-packed adventure, you must choose between Empress and King, two members of the elite squad known as the Mercenary Kings! Dropped on Mandragora Island, you’re tasked with one mission: rescue the brilliant Dr. James Neil from the forces of C.L.A.W. (Cyber Loyalist Active Weapons) and prevent them from using the Mandrake Formula to conquer the globe.

You can be a lone wolf if you dare, or assemble your own team of mercenaries to take down C.L.A.W! Your crew can have up to four players, whether it’s on your couch or online.

Thanks to your support crew back at Camp Crown, the side-scrolling action of Mercenary Kings gets deep. The materials gathered during your missions can be forged into powerful cannons or sharp blades. With 300+ gun parts and more than 100 knives, the possibilities are huge! Will you craft a machine gun with mega-ammo, or a quick-reload pistol? What about forging a blade with deadly range?

    [coming soon]

Yeah, memory usage should only get better with time.. but still, 5gb is a massive amount for any developer right now to sink their teeth into. There shouldnt be an problems once the game is optimized in the memory department.

The VR, i cant wait to see what sony have in store with that, hopefully driveclub.. Still wana see how it performs though and how much it'l cost.
Native 3rd party support for VR seems to be a worry with costly VR game development.. sony would want to make it affordable enough for a good portion of the userbase to buy in, increasing the chances of proper 3rd party support.. if its expensive, idk how much id be willing to drop on the device for a handfull of 1st party VR games and some indie stuff.. still exciting though.

Well it looks like there was a very good reason for the PSN downtime this week, PSNow has started rolling out in NA by the looks of it, although details are kinda sketchy at the moment. So far it looks like if you have a PS+ subscription you can rent games for free, it does not work without a PS+ subscription and you need to use a NA account. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=784269

If this is the same for the EU then this is a great. Looking forward to it. Does this mean we can stream ps3 games on our ps4

It should be, although we are not due it till early next year, although there are ways around that. Yeah basically that is what it is, plus they want to get the PS1 and PS2 games streaming as well, along with being able to stream all the games on your Vita as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,519 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Not really a confirmation that this is PlayStation Now related as that's a screenshot is from a PS3, and It could just be a expansion of the current Plus full game trials. Best guess is that the PS Now brand will be more than streaming and will have downloadable rentals as well for the compatible systems.

Also a 30 day option apparently.

I can see a lot of the people who buy, play, trade-in, and repeat moving to this if it's competitively priced.

I buy games in local shop on release day, but now I'm going to buy Infamous second son, but I'm not too much into that game so don't mind to wait few days for delivery. Where is the cheapest place?

videogamesplus has it for 40 euro, but they want 10 for delivery .. which works out only a tiny bit cheaper than Amazon.

Any place to sell it for 40 including free delivery ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

Wait for it to drop in price on Amazon then if you are not bothered about having it for release. Games with no MP modes tend to drop in price quicker than those with it.

It's €60 on Amazon with free delivery vs €50 delivered on VGP. Only way to get it cheaper would be digital download form the US PSN.

Amazon.co.uk with free first class delivery to parcel motel is the fastest option with a good price IMO.

They've changed the web accessible account management page, and in my case they've seem to have fixed/sorted all my digital content properly in the download list.

Has anyone tried streaming using a mobile connection over 4g?

Actually having said all that, I went and pre-order it of the US psn store (€43), the 24GB download kinda put me off and the fact that I cant trade it in, but im a huge inFamous fan so It would be worth nothing by the time iv platinum'd it and got the future DLC. Also I wanted the cole's legacy mission :pac:
