Why do the Irish need to be liked?

    'Oh everyone loves the Irish' yadda,yadda, yadda

    Why do people at concerts roar with excitement when the performing artists shouts 'Ireland, I love you!!!'. Do they not realised they shouted 'Belgium, I love you!' just last week.

    Likewise the waffle we spout about how important we are in America? Do they not realise that every nation has an over inflated sense of their own importance?

    The fact that we need to be 'liked' is so irritating.

    In fairness, I don't think it's strictly an 'Irish' thing. Everybody likes to be liked, or popular, or whatever.

    Anyone who says they don't feel any need to be popular is never disappointed :D

    Insecurity. Did it ever strike you as odd how in a country so vocal about how great it is has record emigration rates? A lot of people deep down don't truly love Ireland. They want to, and being told how great they are helps convince them.

    Everyone wants to be liked,except sociopaths.

    Most crowds regardless of nationality react the same way when a band/or singer mention their city or country.Thats why the band/singer says it,for a cheap easy crowd reaction.

    What an odd thing to be annoyed by.

    it started annoying me again at the Oscar Wilde Irish awards before the Oscars. Conan O'Brien got an award for 'being Irish' yet his relations haven't lived here since 1860's... How ITNOG is he Irish? Why do we need him and encourage him to be Irish? He is American....

    There is a difference between wanting to be liked and needing it.

    I wouldn't respond to that purely on the basis that you just mentioned, they said it else where last week. It's so false. I think it would be a mistake to think that people actually believe what artists / bands etc. say, I'd imagine the ones that do respond are 'caught up in the moment' so to speak, and don't really believe it themselves. Sure, they're probably back stage saying what an awful kip it is to each other. Not something I'd lose any sleep over though.

    well I haven't been to every nation but I have spent enough time knocking around this country to know that the Irish pack like to be liked.

    Perhaps there is a different country that believes that it has a 'special' relationship with the USA.

    Which would be less important to America Inc than say, for example, our low corporate tax rate.
