Why do the Irish need to be liked?

'Oh everyone loves the Irish' yadda, yadda, yadda

Why do people at concerts roar with excitement when the performing artists shouts 'Ireland, I love you!!!'. Do they not realised they shouted 'Belgium, I love you!' just last week.

Likewise the waffle we spout about how important we are in America? Do they not realise that every nation has an over inflated sense of their own importance?

The fact that we need to be 'liked' is so irritating.

Because 4.5 million of us all think the same way and are easily categorised.

In fairness, I don't think it's strictly an 'Irish' thing. Everybody likes to be liked, or popular, or whatever.

Anyone who says they don't feel any need to be popular is never disappointed :D

    .

Dya reckon the Belgians meet such pronouncements with polite muted applause?

Insecurity. Did it ever strike you as odd how in a country so vocal about how great it is has record emigration rates? A lot of people deep down don't truly love Ireland. They want to, and being told how great they are helps convince them.

Everyone wants to be liked, except sociopaths.

Most crowds regardless of nationality react the same way when a band/or singer mention their city or country.Thats why the band/singer says it,for a cheap easy crowd reaction.

What an odd thing to be annoyed by.

    Maybe :o

it started annoying me again at the Oscar Wilde Irish awards before the Oscars. Conan O'Brien got an award for 'being Irish' yet his relations haven't lived here since 1860's... How ITNOG is he Irish? Why do we need him and encourage him to be Irish? He is American....

There is a difference between wanting to be liked and needing it.

I wouldn't respond to that purely on the basis that you just mentioned, they said it else where last week. It's so false. I think it would be a mistake to think that people actually believe what artists / bands etc. say, I'd imagine the ones that do respond are 'caught up in the moment' so to speak, and don't really believe it themselves. Sure, they're probably back stage saying what an awful kip it is to each other. Not something I'd lose any sleep over though.

So the thread title should be "Why does every nationality need to be liked?"

well I haven't been to every nation but I have spent enough time knocking around this country to know that the Irish pack like to be liked.

Which would be less important to America Inc than say, for example, our low corporate tax rate.

Like the whole 'Corporations come to Ireland for the people', eh no, they come for the tax benefits - see Apple

Sure the Belgians don't even like eachother, nevermind needing to be liked by anyone else.
    Bad comparison.
Plus every band/artist does that because it gets a reaction everywhere they go.
Not unique at all to Ireland.

If every nation has an over inflated sense of their own importance why single out Ireland?
The UK according to their media are America's best buds, whereas in reality the US don't view them in the same way at all in terms of global importance.

No more so than anywhere else really but sure lets just stick to the mantra that Ireland and everything about it is sh*t.

I know what the OP means: it's like when people are being interviewed on chat shows and feel under pressure to say Ireland is great, and then a big "Woop woop" from the audience. So cringey.
Less of the "we" though. A lot of Irish people are the reverse also - "Only in Ireland", "Typical Irish xyz" and all that shyte.
Most Irish people subscribe to neither I'm sure.

Because I live here and have to listen to it.

I don't really care what the media in Angola spout as I cant hear it. I hear what the irish media spout and its irritating.

It did make me smile when Obama was over and harping on about his Irish ancestry.

Then flew to London and claimed to be British the following day.

Followed by a visit to his ancestral home of Germany.......

Just as an aside, there was a discussion in parliament about this not too long ago, which bears an uncanny resemblance to After Hours debates.

So you really could have literally picked any trait in people that you don't like, and stuck it in the thread title.

Why do Irish people feel the need to chew with their mouths open?

Why do Irish people feel the need to talk in the cinema?

Why do Irish people feel the need to watch so much television?

The OP's post makes no sense, it says every country is the same....but that Ireland is terrible because of it. This strange dual relationship is often seen on boards though, where a behavior is praised when other nationalities are at it, but criticised when Irish people do it.

    For example:
Rude, blunt people in other countries= praised for being direct/matter of fact/no nonsense.
Rude and/or blunt people here= Just typical Irish arseholes.
Friendly/helpful people abroad= Friendly, sound people, always want to help.
Friendly/helpful Irish people= Insincere, fake, must want something for themselves.

This thread has also inspired me to go and watch the Simpsons episode where Spinal Tap are playing and their singer (David St. Hubbins I think ) just has the name of the town written on the back of his guitar. Never more than 10 feet from a classic simpsons reference....
