I have a plan ;) but It's not going to be ready for another while so I think I'm going to get a fixer upper in the meantime.

    Bangernomics

    12903940585_f85da08163_c.jpg

Bought Saturday for 480 eur. Drive it for a month or two, then take the engine out of it and stick it in my new camper project. Drives perfect, bar the shot suspension, timing belt done at 165k miles, 200k miles on the clock now, so 25k miles left.

2.5 TDI, the same as the T4 Transporter engines. Get a set of comfy black leather seats with it. Sell a few parts and weigh the remainder in for scrap.

Should come out at near to zero in the end.

    Honda Accord 1.8, NCT 3/15, €850
Looks like a very clean car. I'm sure a bit could haggled off the asking too.

Seems very cheap. I presume you could get this for €1000.

    Honda Civic 1.6, NCT 2/15, tax 4/14, €1650

I'm not too sure about this one, it seems a bit expensive, but it looks immaculate, and in years to come these will only go down the path of the EF Civic, where people will ask crazy money for them, especially clean examples. So lets say you get it for €1500. Would it be a good or bad deal?

Going to see this tomorrow, the Peugeot was a bit too weedy for me but this should suffice. Seller sounds very genuine and 1400 is good money for the condition of the car imo.

Insurance might be fun but hey, only live once!

Convert that into a campervan and the tax will be even cheaper :D At 102 quid/year.

A purple Wagon R was in the running for a car for herself too last year.

Never heard of an E class with a 1.8 engine? Usually fitted with a three litre petrol at least.

What about the e200 that is usually a 2.0?

    Firstly, that's a C-Class, not an E-Class.

E Class starts at 2.0l in the W124 and and W220 versions, goes up to 5.0 litre or 6.2 but these are very rare. The vast vast majority sold were 2.0-3.0 and even then overwhelmingly as 2.0-2.5 litre engines.

You seem to be thinking of the S-Class that starts as a 2.8/3.0 (or even 2.6) in most versions.

Camper regulation is a bed (can be converted from seats), a cooker (rigidly fixed), a storage compartment and a table. No more, no less. With a fully VRT'd car/bus, there's no additional VRT to be paid for the change and no pictures to be send to Rosslare either. Just a coachbuilder to sign off on the work. Some DOE centers will do that for 100-200 quid.

A minimalistic camper is build of that with a cooker and some ply. Basically build a unit in the boot, that's storage compartment and cooker.

The bed can consist of folding all seats down and folding out some ply on piano-hinches from the boot and roll a thin madress out of the boot.

The table can be on a swivel base behind the driver or passenger seat.

I'm not saying, it'll be a very useful camper and you won't get camper insurance on it, but it's doable. And the tax will be half the original then.

Here's a professional version of what I'm on about.

Simplify that, make it smaller, you can actually convert a Wagon R+ to a camper. Even if it's just for tax reasons.

^ When I imported a camper from Germany a couple of years ago they insisted on a standing height in the back of (IIRC) 1.8m, so that car won't pass.

I had one of those on oan when I had a car in a garage getting repaired, it was great craic to drive, felt nippy enough but being about as aerodynamic as a brick from the side had the tendency to feel like it would be tipped over by a gust of wind or some vigorous cornering

Not a bad yoke if you needed something like that

The 1.8m rule was abolished in 2011 with the implementation of EU campervan regulation into irish law. I have 2 campervans sitting here, that neither have 1.8m standing height and were converted in the last 2 years.

Because the original tax is in region of 200/year.
