Gluten free diets

It's not really the same thing - gluten is a protein, starch and carbs are, well, carbohydrates. It's true that starch and gluten come together in the grains I mentioned. I guess the OP was wondering why lots of people who aren't Coeliac (or gluten intolerant) are on 'gluten free' diets. I'm guessing they are more likely to be on low starch or carb diets because of the effects of the starch, not the gluten. I'd imagine it must be quite frustrating for Coeliacs who are very severely restricted on a gluten free diet to hear others harping on about their 'gluten free' diet, which is anything but 'gluten free'.

I'm sure that there are some who get frustrated but many are happy at the extra attention it gets because it leads to extra choices in products (the difference in the palatability of commercially available bread for example now compared to 10 years ago is like night and day) and an increasing awareness in restaurants where you're less likely to get 'Coeliac? What's that? Gluten? Never heard of it) as a response.

Oh sorry, I forgot about Munchausens. It's just that the other post really got under my skin, the way is said it's "cool" to have bipolar or asperger's, as if it was some sort of a trend. :(
That sort of sh1t often gets said by keyboard warriors. Also: dyslexia doesn't exist, ADHD/autism/Aspergers = just a kid being a little sh1t (yeh yeh, sometimes there may be a misdiagnosis to excuse mere bad behaviour, but that doesn't mean those conditions don't exist either).

"It's not mental illness, they're just evil - you're making excuses for them!" etc.

It's just people trying to make sense of stuff they don't understand.

Have you seen the price of the stuff and the p1ss poor selection on the shelves?

Ireland has a very high rate of coeliac disease, perhaps its 'trendy' now because a lot of people have realised they are intolerant or allergic, Irish restaurants, especially in the countryside, aren't really known for catering for people with special dietary needs. I know some of my older friends used to suffer awful stomach pain but had no idea why until they had a dietary test 5 or so years ago.

Gluten free products do tend to be more expensive, which is why you probably don't hear 'poor' people blabbing on about how they're 'gluten free', as they probably don't eat out in the trendy establishments that boast about being GF.

Still angers me when people moan about it being a fad when its a serious, rehabilitating illness.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coeliac_disease (cites Ireland as one of the places with the highest rate of the disease)

My local Surpermarket in Spain, Mercodonna has most products Gluten free. I buy by default and feel great! Even the 72% pork sausages are gluten free. And what a ****ing sausage it is! In Ireland its at best, a 42% pork sausage full of gluten!

Gluten free all the way with fab chicken and sausies!

You are not depriving yourself of any essential nutrients by going Gluten free!

Its basically just bread, cakes, breakfast cereals, pizzas you avoid which are all in fact not great!

    You can still drink Cider.

It's not a coincidence that eating clean/ "Paleo" (I ****ing hate that word) style basically cuts out foods with gluten in them because they are ****e for you! You don't have to buy labels with gluten free (more processed ****e) to be on a gluten free diet, just eat clean!!

To avoid gluten you don't need to buy any of the gluten free products. At all.

Supervalu are doing their own brand versions of gluten free foods, at around 2euro and under, which to me is better than the other brand prices, which I agree are ridiculous.

How about just don't eat foods with gluten, eat as much fruit, veg, meat and seafood as you want. Avoid bread and pasta.
