Have you 2 files in a folder called enigma2 in the root of your usb key? Did you select the enigma2 folder before installing?

Have you the folder named enigma2 without a space? It will not install otherwise. You have to show it the folder then press red to update, should take about 3-5mins

yes, folder and files names are all correct in correct CASE etc.

the upgrade failes after about 2 min using the USB
and it only takes about 30 seconds using the e2upgrade

Then it's not upgrading, forget about upgrading using boot, only use e2upgrade. Try another key and make sure it's formatted fat32 as that's what Spark supports.

have tried boot, used different keys etc. been always been able to use my SANdisk Cruser without issues until now..

if i could only see the log files or something from the linux level i figure out where to fix it. but this shooting in the dark is a pain in the ass..

I'm guessing the plugin i have isn't the one that allows flashing an image the easy way and taking a backup. Has anyone got a link to the plugin which allows both?

    TIA

This version of the plugin should be able to make an enigma2 image backup and flash an enigma2 image also. You can download the e2upgrade plugin here.

To Install the plugin in Spark:
    1. Unzip the .zip file to give the 'plugin' folder.
    2. Put that folder in the root of a FAT32 formatted USB key.
    3. Plug the key into the back of Alien 2 that you booted into Spark.
    4. You will get an on-screen prompt asking if you want to install the plugin. Say yes.

    Note:
You should also be able to just unzip the plug-in and drop it into /root/plugin using FileZilla.

    To Use e2Upgrade Plugin:
1.Copy the enigma2 image files (e2jffs2, uImage) onto your usb stick and plug into rear of your box.
2.With remote menu>plugings>E2 upgrade red button for OSD
3.press red to upgrade, a dialog box will appear saying don't power off upgrading etc. it will say success then disappear
4.You can now reboot to enigma with new image

You can't use the COM port to flash an image. But you can use an ethernet cable instead of a USB Key. I had a problem a few months ago which sounds a bit like yours where I couldn't install a Spark rescue image not matter what USB key I tried. It turned out I needed to issue a command to the Alien 2s onboard boot software with a USB to COM cable and that fixed it. It wasn't reserving enough memory to load both image files basically which is why it just got stuck loading for ever.

I was then able to use any usb key again but it's handy to have the network cable method as an option and it saves spending more money on usb keys.

If you have the patience to read through them then.. this thread and this thread over at sparkfans.net describe my problem and how I solved it which includes explaining how to hook up a USB-COM connection between your PC and Alien2 and how to load an image with a network cable.

    Hi guys,

    - Does anyone know if the 2 cables currently attached to the back of my Sky+ HD box from the dish will attach to the Amiko without any modification?
    - Also do 1 of the cables go into the "loop" connection or do they both go into the Tuner1 SAT & Tuner 2 SAT connection?

Nothing into loop, just the two sat cables into sat1 and sat2 and an aerial into aerial for saorview if you want it. Simple as that.

Yes, the cables will have standard f connectors and connect to the powered sat 1 and sat 2 inputs of the Amiko, you do not connect loop

1channel (new version) , AutoTimer, AutoVolumeAdjustment, AutoBouquets 20131020 (works in about 60 secs), CacheFlush, CrossEPG, CoolTVGuide v7.0, IPTV Updater v1.1, all Picons, Rats Picons, OSCam (blank - no line ), TSMedia v4.9 beta2, PermanentTimeShift, OpenWebIf and Streaming / Recording of $ Channels while watching another $ channel and SambaServer.

Also includes SkyHD bootlogo and skin

The image is setup to use DHCP automatically and is also set for using HDMI at 720p

FTP and Telnet - Username "root", Password "pkteam"
OSCam - http://box_ip:8888 - Username "root", Password "oscam"
OpenWebIf - http://box_ip:00080 - change it in Plugins > OpenWebIf

    Download

    Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the wealth of information on this thread.
I picked up an Alien 2 box and am getting to grips with it. Special thanks to TheTechGuy for your image.

I've figured most stuff out except for one thing, and I was hoping someone might be able to help.

I cannot ses my hard drive listed in the cross epg config screen, so i'm getting warnings and errors re using the internal flash. I have a decent size hdd connected and had no problems recording to it. Is this a bug, or something I've misconfigured? I've turned off the scheduled EPG update for now.

    Thanks in advance.

Hit the home button and just from memory there should be a picture sgowing hdd device or hdd manager, go into that and set up your hdd and enable auto mount and save. All done. Be sure to have your hdd formatted to ext3.vague, but i hope it gives you the idea

thanks a million FlexMcMurphy i have finally got E2 working again by flashing the image with TFTP. i would recommend anyone having issues to use this method..

    taken from your link above

    Preparation:
1.Install TFTP tools [csicotftp11.rar] to your PC
2.Set your PC IP addr to [192.168.40.19]
3.connect your PC to STB by LAN, now we only support LAN, do not support WLAN
4.Set default booting system to [spark]

    Upgrade Step:
1.copy [mImage] and [userfsub.img] to any folder of your PC, for example [C:/spark]
    2.select folder in TFTP tools:
3.Keep Pressing [OK] Button in Front Panel, then power on STB.
4.After 5 seconds you will see [Forc] in LED, release [OK] button and press
    Button.
5.If everything OK, You will see [T LD] shining in LED and you will see some debug information in TFTP Server, like
“Mon Oct 25 14:02:36 2010: Sending 'mImage' file to 192.168.40.19 in binary mode
    Mon Oct 25 14:02:39 2010: Successful.
Mon Oct 25 14:02:50 2010: Sending 'userfsub.img' file to 192.168.40.19 in binary mode
    Mon Oct 25 14:03:33 2010: Successful.”
6.if upgrade success, You will see [SUCC] and STB reboot automatically
If upgrade not finishes in 5 minutes, then there must be something wrong, please check your configuration and re-try

you can download the cisco TFTP from here http://www.swtools.biz/tools/

thanks again everyone for helping, now onto to fun of config champions image...

How do you update picons manually?
I have them in the picon folder, but they're not being picked up in the epg. Mainly Saorview and one or two Satellite ones.

    Cheers

You are aware that you need to scan two frequencies for 3 Rock
    546 Mhz (Ch30) Mux1
    570 Mhz (Ch33) Mux2

Some people (including myself) have the same problem, it will only make one mux available. If you don't manage to get it sorted you should have a look at my Hyperion v3 image. Link
