Some lads just like having big fancy cows that are easy on the eye. Its not very business like but that's what they are into so each to their own. If all suckler farmers and beef farmers were to run everything as strict as a normal business there would be a serious amount of land for let

What bull do ya use on heifers?
Used MBU, NIN in the early days, then FL22. Last heifer got AHZ. Funny but I've never had that much trouble calving heifers, the few that I have.

Anyone got animals with above average intelligence. Have a cow that will open door to parlour walk in pull all feeders on the way and gobble as much as she can on way to front of row. able to open door on way out and keeps coming back for more meal. Goes down yard opens calf house and would be eating nuts on them too. Will always be first out of shed field. turns on lights in shed too. Her calf last yr figured out how to get the gate open and off out go the calves. think she should join the circus-

I alway calf down suckler heifers at 2 years here. It's not just the benefit of an early calf but i find if I let them go too far before bulling, they have put on too much condition and wont go in calf for me.

Same as that Pat apart from a few late August/September born heifers over the years which would have been calved in March. Its a long time before you see any return from them if you leave them until 3 years and I have seen no difference in calf weight, quality or diffuculty in calving them to justify leaving them another year.

I had some scramble this morning, word came the Minister for Agriculture was coming here this morning to inspect storm damage, which he duly did. About an hour and a half before we met him the ould fella sprung a load of hay on me that had to be put in because of the weather. Jesus but it all happens the same day then tumbleweeds for the rest of the year. I wouldn't mind but the phone was hopping all morning, people who'd never ring me looking for this, that and the other.

Erosion on Dogs bay beach, which is back to back with Gurteen beach. That bank is the highest point of land between the beaches and there is only sand topped with Marram grass between them. Seeing as this has now been undercut, given the right conditions the sea will be able to take away both beaches and leave just an island. The area is very important to tourism and is also a commonage grazed by local farmers.

    Me personally? :D

They'll have to, there is devastation in places, have lots of photos of it here locally on the computer.

Whether they have it, or whether they can get it, is another question.

I broke my 2 front teeth with a slap of the postdriver and broke 2 small bones between my top lip and nose, was fine for 2 weeks and then was hit with wicked pains, so got root canal done on 1 at €900! Good thing it only had to be done to 1!

Root canal has to be one of the worst doses ever. Broke front tooth also and twas years after before the root acted up. The trauma l suppose. I didn't give a sh*t how much it cost at the time once the dentist made the pain go away!!

With being sick I forgot to say we sold a couple of calves last week!
    2 blues born last May were 385kg @ 1075 and 410kg @ 1205.
They were the ones that were graded because of bull they're off.

And you've all just reminded me that I have a broken tooth!

To a degree, D-D is a forum for the bored and lonely. I have had lads ring asking about the item, before going off on the most diverse topics. Some of them, you get the feeling they have only had the radio or the dog to shout at all week.

Cant understand keeping them that Long either, it's either 24months or an odd time round 30 if bought in from autumn herd.

No point in feeding them for the extra year at nothing but cost with no benefit, as a couple of studies apparently show there's no benefit long term difference, other than your 3year old will prob calve one less time in a normal commercial life cycle.

And i she doesn't go in calf the first year she's deffinitly not worth keeping. There's no money in beef for hanger ons... Goes for cows to IMO

That's like the fella that does the hedgecutting for the council around here. He said his "friend" would ring people off DD and just chat to them about anything and after a while he'd say he wasn't interested in what they're selling and hang up:D

How do you mean they were graded?

We had two guys come out to the farm after we got a phone call from Dovea and they weighed them, got their daily gain since birth and their predicted weight in a few months.

We just got them to do all our weanlings but these two were the specific ones they wanted to see :pac:
