Was it Sartre who said Hell is Other People?

It is nonsense of course, and Sartre knew it; he was being facetious, but that was his style; and, as with all things Sartre, the style was the man.

I think what he meant was that self-hatred is easier to deal with if we project it onto the world; it is easier to delude yourself that you hate others, rather than you admit to yourself that it is you that you hate; thus opening the gate to the only true unforgivable sin: despair.

95% of people are mind numbingly dull.

Is this a thinly veiled "I'm not mind numbingly dull" post? serious question

That's a bit high-brow for After Hours on a Friday night now in all fairness! :D

Having said that though, you just climbed up a few notches on my "posters I'd invite to dinner" scale, I like to keep interesting company, and it's always good to listen to someone who can put across the finer points of philosophy in layman's terms that even I can understand :o:D

I nearly had a shít attack there. It is Thursday night. I'm willing to argue this point too :)

“The more I love humanity in general the less I love man in particular. In my dreams, I often make plans for the service of humanity, and perhaps I might actually face crucifixion if it were suddenly necessary. Yet I am incapable of living in the same room with anyone for two days together. I know from experience. As soon as anyone is near me, his personality disturbs me and restricts my freedom. In twenty-four hours I begin to hate the best of men: one because he’s too long over his dinner, another because he has a cold and keeps on blowing his nose. I become hostile to people the moment they come close to me. But it has always happened that the more I hate men individually the more I love humanity.”

I'm a little like the late great George Carlin, I like people but only in short bursts, I'm ok for a little while, not extended periods time.

My reason also like his reason is I have a low tolerance for stupid bulls**t as he put it!

Tolstoy knew what he was talking about.

"And all people live, not by reason of any care they have for themselves, but by the love for them which is in other people"

Hard to accept, if one indulges in hatred, but impossible to deny.

But then again Tolstoy was a moral idealist; Dostoevsky was more of a character painter.

    "Serious question" LOL

I wonder which group you belong to?

Nonsense? So you really think that a man that has a dislike for people will come on to what is in effect a social network to let other people know about this dislike. Why would he do that?

I think of internet forums as just usernames on a screen. It's completely anonymous bar the people who give out personal information.

Nobody on boards.ie knows who I am, where I work etc etc

To address some other posts in the thread I did say in my OP that I can act sociable when it's required but I don't like it.

The NSA know what colour knickers you're wearing and the exact consistency of the ****e you expelled this morning so don't be saying nobody reading your posts knows who you are.

I'm not even a person - I'm a sophisticated ELIZA that became self-aware somehow a couple of years ago. Turing that, beee-yatches!

    (Nobody cares)

The thread is heading for it's 7th page so it appears to be a valid subject we are talking about. You also care enough to post in the thread.

It would also be quite interesting to see the amount of people who think of forums such as boards as "real life"

Interesting item to consider studying for a postgraduate social scientist - has the Internet made middle-class students even more self-absorbed and cúntishly insufferable?

Do you really think the NSA are reading AH on boards to see what people are saying:rolleyes:

Its probably more like real life than real life itself - there less of a cost if you are yourself

Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son. ;)

Saying people are dull, 95% of people are dull (with a silent "but I'm not") etc is staggeringly arrogant.
