I think some PowerLines don't like going through a fuse in the plug of a 4-gang.

If you read the blurb that comes with powerlines you will see they specifically say that surge protectors mess them up. But then again who reads the manuals.... :D

On your latest image Champ, are you able to record one channel and watch another?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 713 ✭✭✭cork_south

I ordered the Alien 2 triple plus.
When it arrives should I be following post #2 in the "Amiko Alien2 - Enigma2 Firmware" thread to set it up?
    or
should I be following the subsequent "image" posts in that thread (For example post #48 "Here's a link to my Champions Dec 2013 AR-P based Image - for the Amiko Alien2 and other ST7162 Based Boxes")
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=87868027&postcount=48

What I mean is do you need to set it up as per post #2 first to be able to apply any of the subsequent images in the thread?
If so, can anyone advise which is the most stable image to apply post setup which will allow XBMC to work?

post 2 in that thread is for setting up an image from scratch. Championc and TheTechGuy have done this work for you and set up plugins that you might like and setup the network and tuners (others on other forums have also done it).
When you install one of the presetup images you will only need to retune saorview (and setup oscam if you are using it) to get a working box as you are pointing at the same satellite

Both Championc's AR-P image and TheTechGuys Hyperion3 image are very stable some of us are having trouble with one or the other (eg I can't get all the channels on Saorview with AR-P) just try them and see - it takes about 10mins to load an image

Ah OK thanks, that makes sense.

So it should just be a case of picking an image (by Championc or TheTechGuy) in the firmware that people have given good feedback on and applying it to the Alien when it arrives?
After that just do a rescan for the Saorview channels and they should auto populate.
Is there a readme associated with each image with instructions on how to apply? (I am behind a firewall at the moment and cannot access dropbox)

First page of this thread. Alot of the stuff you wont need to do cos the lads images have it done already. But you will see how to load an image

Cheers, I work with Linux so should hopefully be OK with loading the image following that thread.
I might need more help when the box arrives but thanks for this.
My main fear is that I brick the box.

Nah, you'll be grand. Just have a few different usb's to hand as this box can be fussy about which one it likes.

Anyone having success streaming live tv to an ipad using champs pkteam V2 image. If so can you give me a run down on how you went about it.

I don't have an apple gear but I believe there is an app called vu+ player which you can use.

It is possible to flash an image without a USB key. With the image stored on your computer you can flash it to the Alien2 by connecting them with a network cable.

You would need to install Cisco TFTP Software on your PC, not sure if there is a version for Mac, and follow a few other steps described here.

    Flex

Coud anyone please confirm that this box is the same as many on here have (I don't need the third tuner for saorview). Will it work with ChampionC's and TheTechGuy's images?

I've used GM Spark boxes in the past.
Just want to make sure before I purchase.

Thanks for that, even better that its free. Got the SD channels streaming no problem but can't for the life of me get the HD ones. It says connection established to the stb but stays with a circular progress cursor whizzing around like joe 90 but no picture. Gave up after about 3-4 minutes of it showing me a black screen. And that is with the box cabled directly to a top range netgear dual channel N band router and the ipad connected on the 5.4ghz wifi in the house.

There is another app called Blackbox (used to be Dreambox I think). It says it will do the HD channels but its 6euro so before I jump in if anyone has had problems with HD channels not streaming and found a solution i would be grateful to find out how.

Tried a few apps on ipad and never got HD streaming to work.
That said, the SD stream on the ipad screen size was decent quality IMHO, so I'm happy with that.
Streaming HD channels to the pc worked fine subject to bandwidth/network capacity.

Cheers. Yeah I found the SD picture quality to be not bad. Channels that usually look rubbish on the 50" full HD plasma actually looked ok which surprised me eg: tv3.

My pc is cabled on the home network so I wonder if there is a better way using that to provide the grunt. Eventually I would like to get to the stage where I can use something like no-ip or dyndns to watch the stb on my ipad whilst overseas.

That's exactly what I have setup with a DYN DNS account, SD works fine and HD within my own network is fine (except on ipad) but I don't have the upload bandwidth to serve anything better than SD externally when I am away from home.

I have measured streaming rates on my network, SD uses about 2-4mbit, HD 15-22mbit. Nobody in this country on a residential connection has the upload for HD.

I get around 25 Mbit upload on my phone with Three's LTE network, could be worth looking into leveraging that if someone *really* wanted HD content externally.

Am I confusing bits with bytes?

It would be madness to overload the mobile network with something like this. It's a shared resource.

Agreed, but I'm sure someone will do it!

Yes. Personally I would pay an extra €30 and get the Triple Plus Tuner so you have a bit of redundancy say if your dish setup breaks down or later on you might want to move the box to another room that has no satellite feeds.

Cheers, ordered that one as I've a couple of other tvs in the house that have TV service. The TV this will be connected to can take a saorview connection direct if I have to fall back on it temporarily. Thanks for the confirmation.

It would also offer more recording options.

Is it possible to get an existing sky magic eye working with this box?
I read something about a tri-link, has anyone got any more details?

The magic transfers the remote signals is it?

You could use a phone app to change channels either maybe?

Had an issue with the Hyperion 3 image recording one while watching another channel.

Found the cause of the problem last night.

So if anyone else has the same problem (taking into account your settings, cabling, terminations, etc are in working order), press and hold the blue button, this will bring up the menu where you can see if set ca1 to ca0 is disabled/enabled.

Enabling this setting sorted my problem. Maybe obvious to some , but to me and few others here i hope it helps you out.

I see the SAB triple HD box is now selling for less then €160, my old DM800 is getting a bit creaky with age & is starting to act up, Im using an external USB dvb-t tuner to pickup saorview channels but it's not ideal, very tempted to buy the Sab unless someone can convince me to keep clear of it,...does it handle :pac::pac::pac: AM
