Since when is voting "shouting"?

You'd better block your ears from democracy, Padre. Oh yeah, you already have, since you think liberals are turning the place into N Korea, a position too contorted for even a double-jointed snake.

Because a certain percentage of the population are homophobic is not a reason to deny another percentage of the population equal human rights.

Why do you keep using the word 'hysterical'? I understand it's an emotionally-charged word and you're hoping that it'll shut us up, but everyone here has responded calmly, I have seen no hysteria.

I've already stated that if gay people want to get married the they should be allowed to.

    What do you want?

This is the main problem I have with the upcoming referendum, the rights of a vulnerable minority should not be subject to mob opinion.

You have to understand that when posting anonymously on the internet, stories which just happen to back up your point but are almost impossible to prove are null and void in a discussion.

Those people you speak about, they will have their opportunity to voice their opinion. The point of all this is not to force all gay people to get married and adopt children. It is to allow the choice, a choice currently not afforded to them.

Personally I don't really care what homosexual couples do.

If they want to get married, then go ahead.

One thing they can't do though is procreate, only hetrosexual couples can do that, and that's what keeps the human race alive.

There is no 'if'. A large number of LBGT couples do want to get married. So why should anyone be trying to prevent that? Why do Iona and friends even need an opinion? What is it to do with them?

Usually if in the wrong, there is an edit.

We see mods do it all the time on boards, should mods not edit posts that could or are causing trouble, because it could be viewed as censorship, or are they just being sensible?

So that is Yes to my question

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Any one else notice there seems to be notable increase in anti-SSM posters committing 'suicide by Mod'?

Their M.O. is always the same - indulge in some flaming type remarks about 'Liberals' and 'censorship', ignore any reasoned responses, engage in low level name-calling and post a few obnoxious sound bites until a Mod responds and (the hope) bans them so they can scream they are being silenced or if the Mod issues a warning continue by disputing that warning in-thread so they do get banned and can scream about being silenced.

What an odd thing to do in a discussion forum...

That is democracy in a nutshell... giving 51% the ability to take away the rights of the other 49%

Well ... that's a little silly really. I am totally and 100% in favour of total equal rights and oppose Iona 1000%.

But we do live in a democracy and the voting people make the rules. We have to live with that. of course I would prefer if we enshrine these rights into the big "C", but that's not possible as yet it seems.

What we need to do is shine the light on organisations like Iona and on their benefactors and financiers, including shady catholic church and American connections. We need to call them out, and take them on in the media. We also need to get people to VOTE !! and not take things for granted.

They will spend huge money on advertising, on billboards and posters. They will do what these organisations did in previous referenda - try to share the bejeezuz out of the dimmer in our population. We will hear every old bigoted cliche we could ever dream up. And we have to make sure that we WIN.

How aren't they vulnerable? Homosexuals suffer from both institutional discrimination as well as widespread intolerance and prejudice. 9 out of 10 young gay people are bullied in schools because of their sexuality, which explains the fact that gay people are 3 times more likely to commit suicide and up to 9 times more likely to abuse substances. This, I can back up with studies unlike the hypothetical 'evidence' you have been providing.

So the two posters most adamant to defend Iona and their point of view have been a priest (Fr. Ned) and a person with an extra K missing from his user-name (RobertKK).

At least they have come forward and tried, admittedly badly, to instigate debate. Nonetheless there will be some who see posters being asked to stop posting in this thread is indicative of the inability to "debate" this issue. Not true. Try and establish your point of view with facts and not try and be subtle about what you believe. If you fly under the flag of discrimination then do not be surprised when people call you out on it and make it appear ludicrous. Also please stop trying to usurp the word "traditional", it has never been a euphemism for discrimination.
