    Brilliant :D

Who is she? They had to dig deep into the barrel to find a non-Iona opponent by the looks of it.

I'm about 12 minutes behind reality, btw ;) (pausing live TV)

Noel Whelan is coming out with some crap. Yeah, his commitment to equality is really shining through

Hopefully the quid pro quo for the Iona payoff is that RTE will now choose not to have them on, or mentioned on TV, at all.

If I was 20 years younger, and not heterosexual, I might think O'Brien Jr would be quite the catch :pac:

although - mother in law problems - I'm turned right off now

noel whelan essentially says "to equate discrimination with homophobia is the problem."

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

well done to Colm and Averil for getting in straight away when it was stated that Iona + Waters were vindicated by virtue of the payoff and making it perfectly clear that was not correct.

And well said to the man who related his own experiences of homophobia which nearly turned to serious violence against him. Others have fared much worse.

Some like to argue in abstract terms as if their views can never adversely influence others - but the ugliness that happens 'on the street' only reflects the ugliness within the hearts of our more 'refined' middle-class 'respectable' 'pillars of society' bigots. I'm sure some eastern philosopher or other has reflected upon the moral equivalence of raising an angry thought and an angry word and an angry fist.

    I'm so angry after that.

If Susan Phillips is so at ease with her beliefs that she just wants to express you meanies why wasn't she comfortable saying she opposed the decriminalisation of homosexuality?

I think I would have more respect for her if she just came out and said "I'm uncomfortable with gay people. They're not normal. I don't want them to be able to marry" rather than all this "I'm a traditionalist" BS.

  • Moderators Posts: 52,029 ✭✭✭✭Delirium

Traditionalists also didn't want her to have the vote or work outside the home.

Careful now, some folk would traditionally regard pointing out facts like that as a kind of hate mail...

Could we just vote to prevent just Susan Philips from having a vote? I'm that sort of traditionalist.

Because her moral absolutes don't look so good now in the light of popular opinion, so other moral absolutes must be chosen as the next line of battle.

It's like the Germans in Italy preparing defensive line after defensive line, when they already knew the war was ultimately lost and they had no moral ground to fight in the first place.

Well, I'm off to set up the Institute of Phomohobia.

It actually worked against Iona + Waters not appearing on the show tonight. The anti-marriage equality crew was represented by someone more extreme, in that she supported homosexuality remaining illegal.

Homophobia amongst the anti-marriage equality people gain traction tonight.

    No

Give her a voice and please keep her coming back onto tv. We need to show that this is the level of hatred against lgbt people and that she lies as well

It probably would've been much worse for them if they had appeared. They were advised to decline, and no doubt this was by people who know what they're doing in relation to the media.
I think if they'd showed up against rational, capable, experienced speakers like Colm O'Gorman they'd have been totally shown up in short order.

Much easier to just ignore it and then go back to their publication-is-guaranteed-no-matter-what-crap-we-write columns in the national newspapers.

In fairness to him, those emails he quotes are abhorrent

I'd be very slow to believe that the address those emails were sent from didn't end in "@iona.ie" or equivalent.

This kind of thing is very much reminiscent of when Shrub first stole the White House and his staffers spent the best part of a week spreading a lie that the outgoing Clinton administration thrashed the building, including spreading faeces around the place and destroying all communications equipment, try to deflect attention away from your wrongdoing by spreading lies about the opposition doing wrong.

Joking of course, she unwittingly does a wonderful job for marriage equality. At one point she seemed to argue in favour of banning the word equality.

In regards to O Connor's handling of the program that he ignored every word that was said including Buzz' and concluded with 'so we won't use the word homophobic in future debates'. It was as if he was trying to retain his job.

I agree with this article. The underlying issue is the poor protections for free speech under Irish law.
