Why Ledley would choose a Crystal Palace relagation dog fight under Tony Pulis over silverware and UCL is beyond me. Must have gotten some serious £££.

Best of luck to him though, has been our best midfielder (Wanyama included) over the last 3 years.

Wouldnt sign a new contract so Celtic accepted a bid for him. He rejected their initial contract offer so its probably a whopper especially with him running down his contract.

We got him as a free agent, 3 & 1/2 years of exemplary service, sold him £800k and the club is in a far better condition, in every aspect, because of contributions to the cause like his. Disappointed but can only wish him the best of luck.

I was surprised someone bigger than palace didn't come in for him. I thought maybe a club like Villa or Everton might have been interested. There's only one reason why Sammy is still here and that's because no-one made a concrete offer for him that he was interested in himself. Sammy performed really well for Celtic in Europe last season but it looks like he will leave for nothing at the end of the season.

Well good luck Joe, and welcome Leigh. Admittedly I'm a little disappointed with both transfers but what's done is done. Hope LG can handle the pressure, especially with regards to the expectations around the CL. I felt experience got us over the line last season, the new faces will have to be at their best to make an impact.

That said I think we have some decent players now and I'm looking forward to seeing Griffith's and Johansen in action, hopefully with the likes of Boerrigter back to fitness also.

Can't embed the youtube for some reason, here's the direct link. Watt scoring a very good goal v Anderlecht 6 minutes into the clip.

Surely Watt will come back and will have a future at Celtic. Where that leaves one or two of Griffiths/Stokes/Pukki/Balde, there wont be room for all of them, and they are all similar standard. hard to know which ones will lose out or which ones will be around long term.

Yesterday was disappointing but today is all about re-writing the history books.

I think Lennon will play it safe on the occasion by pairing Mulgrew with Brown in the middle & Samaras & Forrest on the wings. Surely it opens up a well deserved start for Balde up top with Commons playing off him. Back 4 & Goalkeeper will have no surprises bar some injury concerns.

Gutted to see Ledley leave. One of our most consistent and important players over the last 3 seasons. Seems odd that he is going to a club like Crystal Palace too.

I think you have to question the ambition of a man who would choose to play for a club like Palace over a club that plays in Europe nearly every season.
Maybe he assumes more of the games he plays will be more competitive but I can't personally get my head round the mentality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,755 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

I think it is fairly obvious, he can command much better wages at Palace than at Celtic. I can safely say that 100% of people in their jobs would do the same

No complaints when a man wants to test himself against the best and on the biggest stage (infact I'd question someone who didn't want to) but always sad to see a great servant like Ledley go. Always played with such passion and commitment, which is all I ever ask of any Celtic player, and had bags of ability to go with it. Look forward to seeing him showcase his talent in the EPL.

Was a bit underwhelmed by Griffiths at first but around £1m for a 23 year old who's proven at this level (more goals last season than Stokes has ever managed) seems great value the more I look at him. I think (honestly!!) he gets a raw deal cause of the way he looks.

1-0 FT. Only caught the last 10 mins unfortunately. Congrats to Forster though, great achievement.

Strange game in how many chances we created and yet we only win 1-0. Without being brilliant I thought we played well except in the final third where we just could not seem to get it right. Griffiths must have been chomping at the bit seeing all the chances we created and good positions we got in. But the main thing was we didn't panic and won the game. Well done to new bhoy Stefan Johansen on his full debut. He looked good. Passed and kept the ball well and worked his socks off when we didn't have the ball.

But of course the major applause goes to Fraser Forster and out back line for the record breaking 11th straight league clean sheet. A very impressive run indeed.

Fergus McCann to be honoured at Celtic Park
CELTIC Football Club today announced that Fergus McCann is to be welcomed back to Celtic Park for the first home league match of next season as the Club’s Guest of Honour.

This year, 2014, marks the 20th anniversary of Fergus’s takeover of Celtic, the beginning of a period where he revitalised the Club and ensured Celtic’s proud history and tradition at the top of Scottish football continued.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We are delighted that Fergus has agreed to be our Guest of Honour at our first home match of next season.

"2014 is a very special year for Celtic, with a great deal happening for the Club, but not least it is a year of real significance, as it marks the 20th anniversary of Fergus’s takeover of Celtic and it is absolutely right that the special contribution he made to Celtic is marked in this way.

“Fergus’s intervention in 1994 delivered the current Celtic Park, at the time the largest club stadium in Britain and ultimately, he re-established Celtic as a footballing force by winning the Scottish Premier League in season 1997/98.

"He enabled supporters to take a stake in the Club they loved, to be part of something and once again have pride in their team. He energised and motivated our support and our supporters responded brilliantly by backing his vision.

“Fergus was also instrumental in revitalising Celtic’s charitable traditions, establishing a Charity Foundation which has now become one of the most successful in world football as well as personally delivering financial assistance to causes close to the Club’s heart.

“A true Celtic supporter, Fergus delivered huge personal investment, sound leadership and tremendous vision during his tenure at Celtic. He showed unwavering determination and resilience to ensure his Club could once again flourish and his contribution has led directly to the position of health which our Club is in today.

“I know I speak for thousands of Celtic supporters when I thank Fergus sincerely for all he achieved at Celtic and I am sure we will join together in August to remember and celebrate his magnificent achievements.”

Celtic Manager Neil Lennon said: “It is absolutely right that we show our respect and gratitude to Fergus McCann, someone for whom I have enormous respect. Fergus showed tremendous foresight and, indeed, courage to tackle the situation the Club was in at the time in 1994.

"No-one can deny that Fergus absolutely delivered. He did what he believed in and achieved all that he said he would.

“The first time I met Fergus was at Fenway Park in Boston. It was a pleasure to meet him and I felt it was very important that the players met him too on that occasion. He was very humble about all his achievements, something which says a lot about him as a man.

“There are many great figures in Celtic’s proud history and for me, Fergus McCann is right up there as one of our most important.”

Fergus McCann said: “It is very kind of the Club and supporters to think of me and to offer this gesture.

"I am sorry I can’t be with you at the match on the 1st of March due to unavoidable commitments in America but I will be pleased and honoured to attend a match at the start of next season. It is incredible to think that 20 years have passed since the takeover.

“It gives me great pleasure to see Celtic as such a successful and well-run club as it is today. That is credit to the faithful backing of the supporters, also the investors, and, since I left, the vision and management of the Board, Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon and their staff and players.”

The Club is already planning to mark Fergus’s contribution to Celtic at our home match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on March 1, 2014.

This date is our nearest home match to the date of the 20th anniversary of Fergus’s takeover which took place on March 4, 1994. Further details on the arrangements for this matchday will be announced shortly.

Unfortunately, due to unavoidable commitments in the United States Fergus will not be able to attend the match in March.

However, we are delighted that he has agreed to be our Guest of Honour in August and we are sure this will be a day when we can celebrate the wonderful 20th anniversary of his achievements and herald a man who is undoubtedly such an important and influential figure in Celtic’s history.

Pity he couldnt come in March but in recent times, his importance to Celtic has become crystal clear. Many fans, including myself, questioned his leadership at times but a review of history has proven his decision making at the time absolutely correct and I think fans will want to make amends for the day he was booed.

The liquidation of Rangers, the abuse of the loyalty of Rangers supporters by the new company and all those who pretended to care about anything other than money, the collapse of Hearts, and all the owners that have abused clubs around the UK hammers home how important he was and how monumental the transformation he subsequently carried out.

Either a statue of him should be commissioned or, more fittingly, the North Stand should be renamed after him.

Agreed, McCann is one of the most important figures in the history of Celtic and naming the North Stand after him would go a small way towards repaying him

Scott Brown speaking to the press ahead of this Saturday's Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park against Aberdeen. (PC)

Scott Brown: It's going to be a hard game. Aberdeen are playing really well but so are we, so it should be a good game. (PC)

SB: 'We want to keep the unbeaten run and the clean-sheet record going for as long as possible.'

Scott Brown on Leigh Griffiths: I've been his chauffeur this week so I'm looking forward to him passing his driving test.

SB: Leigh's been doing well in training this week. He's got pace and he's an intelligent player who can also hold the ball up well.

SB: I saw Willo Flood & Barry Robson day in, day out when they were here & they're both good players who bring some experience to Aberdeen.

SB: We've got experience and youth in our side too, and in James Forrest we've got a player who is on fire just now.

SB: Cup games are huge. We'd love to get to the next round but we know it's going to be a hard game against Aberdeen on Saturday..

Manager press conference at Lennoxtown today: Adam Matthews is touch & go after being out for 3-4 weeks, while James Forrest is a doubt.(PC)

Neil Lennon: Leigh Griffiths is fully fit but maybe has a bit to do to catch up because of lack of games, but he’s in the running to start.

NL :Aberdeen have been playing well this season. Derek McInnes has recruited well and they've got a lot of experience in their side.

NL: They played well last weekend in semi-final & look dangerous on counter-attack. Pressure is always on us & we’re always the team to beat

Neil Lennon on last weekend's incident at Tynecastle: 'I'm not happy with some of the stuff that’s come out this week in terms of myself.'

NL: Journalists saying I attract it, that it’s my confrontational & controversial nature. For me, that’s very irresponsible towards me.'

NL: 'I'm no more confrontational than any other manager in the SPFL. However, when it’s an issue regarding me, it seems to me imbalanced.'

NL: You cannot have people throwing coins at you when you’re trying to do your job, yet some people seem to think it’s my fault.

NLI don’t think it’s fair on Aberdeen. I have a great relationship with Aberdeen. We do as a club, and I get on very well with Derek

NL: This won’t sour the relationship between me and Derek, or me and Aberdeen, but I want the people who did this accounted for.

NL: I don’t think it will have any effect on the atmosphere tomorrow. Both sets of fans are looking forward to the game.

The usual **** stirrers in the media couldnt wait to have a go at Lennon.

    EDIT

Now Lennon is no wallflower. That’s for sure.

There’s more than a touch of the street fighter about him. He’s a wind-up merchant too.

In fact there is a part of him that seems to thrive on chaos and combat and yes, there are times when this high-viz approach to management makes him a target for opposition support. That’s fine. In football, it’s business as usual.

Heaven knows Lennon has even traded words with his own supporters which just goes to show he could probably start a fight in an empty dugout.

Pure bile by someone that continually brings shame to Scottish Journalism

Pure bile by someone that continually brings shame to Scottish Journalism

The comments from that journo Keith Jackson is revealing. Just imagine if Jose Mourinho or Alex Ferguson before he retired were at a game and fans decided to hurl abuse at them. It would be totally unacceptable for a journalist in an article to kind of qualify such an occurrence by saying Mourinho or Ferguson were combative managers that use wind up merchant tactics and attract the ire of opposition supporters. In Scotland however it seems it's ok for a journo to have a pop at Lennon in the context of him being abused by football supporters while he's sitting in the stand watching a game.

There's something culturally wrong there with the attitude of the Aberdeen fans at Tynecastle firstly and then the comments from that journo.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-manager-neil-lennon-speaks-3121991
"I don't want it," the former Northern Ireland international said.

"I don't need it. I'm not happy with some of the stuff that has come out regarding myself in terms of journalists saying, 'He attracts it, it's his controversial, confrontational nature'.

"For me, that's very irresponsible. I am no more confrontational than any other manager in the SPFL. However, when it's an issue regarding me, it seems to be imbalanced.

"You cannot have people throw coins at you when you are sitting there trying to do your job. And yet some people in the back of their minds think it's my fault. Why this happens, I don't know.

"In the past there is no question there were sectarian elements to what happened to me. People want to bury their head about that. I don't, I want it said and I want something done about it. Last week there was no evidence of a sectarian element, but certainly a hooligan element."

Lennon added: "It's getting harder to comprehend because I don't think I have done anything to warrant it. I think my players, myself, my backroom team conduct ourselves in the best way.

"When there are flashpoints, which happens to every manager, it gets highlighted and blown into the stratosphere.

"I see managers every week losing the rag. I don't complain because I understand how they feel. But there's no pictures of them the next day going up to the fourth official and being abusive or squaring up to another manager. But when I'm involved it's front and back page.

"I look at some of the comments - 'He was a thug on the pitch'. No I wasn't. I never lifted my hand to anyone, never two-footed anyone, never elbowed anyone. I played the game aggressively, which was my job.

"'He brings it on himself.' In what way? Do I go down the street looking for it? Anyone who knows me away from football knows the type of person that I am. Anyone who knows me within the game knows that I want to win, and I'll do anything I can within my power to do that. People don't like it and people use other excuses to vent their fury on me."

"I have certainly tried to do that and it's not working," the 42-year-old said.

"I don't think the condemnation is enough. Sometimes I get the feeling that, 'It's Lenny, he can take it, he's a stand-up guy, he's a street-fighting man'. All that c**p. I'm fed up with it.

"I don't go street-fighting. I look after myself and my friends and family. I live my life as quietly as I can away from football but I'm in the public eye.

"But a lot of the stuff has been almost life-threatening and the condemnation has been nowhere enough."

"I don't know, I don't know. It's a lot to give up and I don't really want to do that if I can avoid it."

After a pause, Lennon added: "No, it hasn't come to that point yet, certainly not. What will determine it is if things go wrong on the pitch. And that will be determine by other people, not me.

"It may be my decision further down the line, but I'm not picturing that scenario. I want to be as successful as I can for as long as I can.

"I love being the manager of Celtic. It's a privilege, an absolute honour. And I don't want to give it up because I worked very, very hard to be in the position I'm in.

"That's the reason why I haven't walked. It's a prestigious job, a precarious job if you look at what's going on in England, a lot of sackings.

"Being the manager of Celtic, there are only 17 other people who have done it, and that means a lot to me."

"I don't think it's fair on Aberdeen," he said. "I have a great relationship with Aberdeen, we do as a club. I get on very well with Derek, I have tremendous respect for him. This isn't going to sour those relationships.

"However, I want the perpetrators accounted for."

Winning, losing, embarrassing defeats, getting abuse or death threats, no better man to articulate the problem than Neil Lennon. Always a measured & honest response from him in the media and very often its on the money. Never afraid to criticise his team or people if he feels the situation merits that approach.

Glad to see that whats happened hasnt dampened his enthusiasm, drive & passion for the Celtic job. Most would have ran for the hills by now if they had to deal with the shíte he does

CELTIC plc have released the interim report for the six months to December 31, 2013.

    Operational Highlights
    • Progression to group stages of the Champions League.
    • Currently unbeaten in the SPFL Premiership and top of the league.
    • Breaking long standing record for number of consecutive clean sheets.
    • Academy continues to be successful; over 70 internationalists at Under 21 level and below.
    • Multi-million pound investment in the area around Celtic Park, benefiting supporters and the local community.
    • Launch of the Kerrydale Bar, Café 1888 and new family stand.
    • Installation of a full stadium Wi-Fi network with accompanying matchday application.

    Financial Highlights
    • Revenue decreased by 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m).
    • Operating expenses decreased by 7% to £34.3m (2012: £37.0m).
    • Profit from trading before asset transaction and exceptional operating expenses of £10.5m (2012: £13.1m).
    • Exceptional costs of £2.3m (2012: nil).
    • Profit on disposal of intangible assets £16.5m (2012: £5.2m).
    • Profit before taxation of £21.3m (2012:£ 14.9m).
    • Period end net cash at bank of £5.7m (2012: £0.1m net bank debt).
    • Investment in football personnel of £5.0m (2012: £4.7m).
    • 16 home fixtures (2012: 19).
I am pleased to report on our financial results for the six months ended 31 December 2013. The introductory page to these interim results summarises the main highlights.

We have enjoyed another highly successful period on the football pitch. As we report today, we are comfortably at the top of the SPFL Premiership, having enjoyed an excellent run of results in the league, remaining unbeaten and having broken a long standing record for the number of consecutive clean sheets.

Having won the Scottish Premier League title in season 2012/13, we qualified once again for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. Our reputation as a leading club in European football has been enhanced by that success. These results reflect the financial benefit of participation in the group stages of the Champions League for a second year in a row, coupled with successful management of the playing squad.

Revenue dropped for the period to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m). The decrease compared to last year’s results at this stage largely reflects the impact of our decision to make the £100 reward for adult season ticket packages, together with playing three fewer home matches in the period and accumulating fewer points in the Champions League group stages, resulting in reduced UEFA distributions.

Operating expenses for the period decreased by 7% to £34.3m, leading to a profit from trading, before asset transactions and exceptional operating expenses of £10.5m (2012: £13.1m). Exceptional operating expenses in the period of £2.3m relate to an impairment charge.

Prudent investment in, and management of, our playing squad is a key component of the club’s strategy. In line with that strategy, we continued to invest in the playing squad, with £5.0m invested, an increase from last year (2012: £4.7m). Our profit on disposal of intangible assets of £16.5m, in comparison to a profit of £5.2m last year, largely reflects the transfers of Gary Hooper, Victor Wanyama and Kelvin Wilson. Together with ongoing investment in our Academy, the identification and creation of Champions League quality players remains fundamental to Celtic. Following the end of the period, during the 2014 January transfer window, further investment was made, securing the signing of the highly rated players Holmbert Fridjonsson, Stefan Johansen and Leigh Griffiths.

As at 31st December 2013, net cash at bank was £5.7m. Our profit before taxation for the half year was £21.3m, an increase of over 40% on the same period last year.

There is little doubt that this is a robust set of interim results and they reflect a club that is in excellent financial health.

The strategy of the Board is unchanged; our overwhelming priority is to win the SPFL Premiership and to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and beyond; we seek to give our manager the best tools for the job, within the constraints of our economic environment; we aim to create value by investing in our youth academy and by acquiring players that we can develop; and in terms of the finances we seek to live within our means. All of this helps us prepare for the future and the economic uncertainties, which have had such a devastating effect on many other football clubs.

Our Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, is serving as a Director of the Scottish FA, while our Financial Director, Eric Riley, serves as a Director of the Scottish Professional Football League. The structural and financial difficulties that face Scottish football are well documented and it is fair to say that the outlook for the game is challenging. I am gratified that Peter and Eric can make a contribution to overcoming the obstacles that lie ahead.

Looking forward to the second half, as with previous years, trading performance in the remaining months of this financial year will not be at the same level as that in the first six months (or the comparable period in 2013), with fewer home matches scheduled, no Champions League participation and lower gain on player sales.

A key focus for the year will be our continued investment in Celtic Park, not only for our own supporters’ experience on match days, but also for the benefit of the wider community. In January we opened a dedicated facility for disabled supporters and, throughout the year, we look forward to delivering further projects, including development of our Wi-Fi system, safe standing areas and the new landscaped and public realm area to the front of Celtic Park. In addition, we will continue to support Celtic FC Foundation in its very important charitable work, which provides assistance in key priority areas of health, equality, learning and poverty.

This has been another very active spell for the club and my profound thanks and appreciation go to Neil Lennon and his backroom staff, all of the players, executive management and staff, who are committed to ensuring that Celtic is a world class football club. Most importantly, I pay tribute to the fans, whose support, encouragement and dedication is second to none.

    Ian P Bankier
    Chairman
    7 February 2014

expecting CL group stages when we have only bought in Leigh Griffiths and the Norwegian lad is a big big ask, it's fair to say that Celtic have overachieved in Europe in recent years

No more of a big ask than the past 2 years tbh. Last year, Kelvin Wilson, Gary Hooper & Victor Wanyama were sold in the summer and general upheaval with the playing squad and we still qualified.

We've a squad to beat anyone that we can possibly face in the Champions route as it stands, I dont get this idea that the Champions route somehow gets harder each year.

The SNP's anti-football act continues to wreck havoc on people's lives. Celtic fan Kevin is currently held on remand for singing a song.

Things are getting worse for football fans (of a certain heritage) in Scotland

No more of a big ask than the past 2 years tbh. Last year, Kelvin Wilson, Gary Hooper & Victor Wanyama were sold in the summer and general upheaval with the playing squad and we still qualified.

The 1st tie is a handy game v a semi professional outfit. The second tie might be a bit trickier but we should sail through even with what we have now. The qualifier could be difficult, last season we drew the lowest ranked side in the draw - Shakter Karagandy - and made heavy work of beating them.

We might lose players this summer before the qualifiers again. Some of our players will be at the World Cup as well. We should qualify but it's not a foregone conclusion and it's vital for morale and progression that we qualify.

Lowest ranked but I think flying to Kazakhstan for a european tie is not something you'd call typical for match preparation and that showed. I wont be dwelling on it too much, as when the pressure was on, the players ultimately delivered and I've no reason to think they cant do it again. I wouldnt have been worried by any of the other unseeded sides either, including Viktoria Plzen.

As for the players we could potentially lose, we could sign players that are better too. I dont think we could damage the squad much worse than we did last summer tbh. All ifs and buts tbh, but the core of the squad will still be here no matter what happens & with 2 seasons of UCL experience under their belt there the expectation will be to qualify because they will still be much stronger than the unseeded sides.

Celtic starting XI to face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup fifth round today (KO: 12.45pm)

Forster, Matthews, Ambrose, Van Dijk, Izaguirre, Forrest, Brown, Johansen, Samaras, Commons, Stokes.

Subs: Zaluska, Griffiths, Fisher, Balde, Boerrigter, Biton, Pukki

Pretty Standard lineup, looking forward to getting a good look at Johansen too
