BAI complaints are usually low, as you have to fill in a form. i believe there were over a 100 as of yesterday, so that's pretty good. Not sure if emails are counted unless you fill in the complaint form.

I predict lots of wittering by Iona: letters to the editor, columns in their pet papers, mass panel attacks on RTE, but the difference is that this is legislation, not a referendum and the only vote that matters will be in the Dail.

Which will pass with a huge majority. Will anyone in the Dail vote up against it?
Probablly the reform alliance, possibly some FFers if they split on the issue like abortion, a few independents and possibly some FGers who will break whip

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I very much doubt it. "Life of the unborn" is one thing - picking on gays is altogether different. I think Iona are going to be way, way out on their own this time.

Well I think LGBT issues are important to FF's rebranding effort as a new modern and progressive party, so I hope Michéal Martin will try and ensure that most if not all TDs and Senators tow the line.

Labour will by and large support it. As would I expect SF. Most of the Technical Group would be fairly progressive as well.

Hopefully that should get it well over the line - though I do expect there to be a lot more noise when it comes to a vote.

Ultimately though I would expect that the votes would not be too dissimilar to the abortion vote,

nah - Billy Timmins and Lucinda Creighton are not in favour of marriage equality. Fidelma Healy Eames changes her mind on it a lot. I honestly do think Reform Alliance, some FG and some FF and some independents will oppose legislation for civil partners adopting. Lets not be naive to think there will be no opposition!!!!!

Not many people know this, but Ireland's Gay Switchboard had to be called "Tel-A-Friend" when it launched 40 years ago this year, because the powers-that-be prohibited the word "gay" being used in the Irish telephone book.

We really have come incredibly far as a society in such a short space of time. Well, many of us have...

True. I can't imagine living in a world with telephone switchboards.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Power called on the Minister for Communications to address the Seanad over the recent revelations that RTÉ has made a financial settlement with individuals associated with the Iona Institute.

    LOOK!

    Well said.

I have no problem with debate I have a problem in a democracy with money buying the debate away from citizens.

I worry about this with the Iona Institute with other issues besides the gay marriage situation.

    Well said on her part!

I'm beginning to get the impression that the only people who don't think the Iona Institute are homophobic are the members and friends and family of the members of the Iona Institute. Landslide.

So after the Iona Institute have effectively silenced any future criticism of homophobia on the national broadcaster with legal threats and attempts to demonise anyone making fair comment, not to mention RTE making it abundantly clear that the Iona crowd are the only ones allowed to set the terms of debate*, they think NOW is the time to try and discuss who gets to define homophobia?

Jesus f*cking wept. complaints@rte.ie is becoming my most common contact.

*'Debate' is a generous term for the likes of Breda O'Brien dodging questions, moving goalposts and mewling about oppression when directly called on her bullsh*t.

Make sure to follow up your complaint and forward it to BAI though if you're serious about making a complaint. complaints@bai.ie

Is there anyone going to be around on Sunday that wants to meet up? Message me.

Saturday night is going to be interesting...I don't know what RTE are at doing a show like this but tbh, like the God Slot spin, it'll probably only take up a small segment of the show, i.e they're cashing in on a buzzword for viewer numbers.

I think it's only fair not to assume all Catholics share the views Iona do - I would daresay a good majority of Catholics in Ireland today, and even around the world, have a much more relaxed perspective on current affairs. It's just the more devout group are fiercely organised, funded, and loud, so they come across much larger than life. It seems to me that Iona's main objective isn't to spread the good word of God and Catholic values. Their admin/behind the scenes situation is dodgy as hell.

Was watching this old Prime Time show on gay marriage - this seemed to have a much fairer structure of debate than what we've seen with Iona-involved ones. Why can't we have more of this? (Susan Philips comes across as rather toxic...)

I had intended doing my complaint to rte this weekend.

I will complete and send in the BAI complaint form as well.

I'd encourage everyone to at a minimum send email to rte but better yet send complaint to bai.

She gets rolled out now and again as a "political analyst" - noone really knows what qualifies her as a political analyst though
She has long form in this area.

    www.mamanpoulet.com/political-analysis-ala-susan-phillips/

Back in the 1990s as a member of Wicklow County Council she attempted to stop IGLYO (the International lgbtq youth organisation) from having a picnic in Glendalough because it was holy ground
On the late late show she also told Katherine Zappone and Anne Louise Gilligan they are not married.

I don't know how people take pleasure out of being that nasty and insulting. She claims lesbians are selfish and refers to gay relationships as 'friendships' as if they aren't capable of love...the woman hasn't a single notion, luckily she seems to have been by and large, dismissed on PT by the audience.

When Fianna Fáil’s Jim Walsh said defamatory comments had been made, Labour’s Ivana Bacik said that was a matter of view, not an established view.
Mr Walsh said the programme was available online and could be accessed. “Senators Power, Bacik and others will be aware of the hate campaign on Twitter at present,’’ he added.
He said the institute had never been in any way homophobic. “What it stands for, a view which I and many people in this country share,” he said. “I also look forward to the debate in the lead up to the referendum... is that every child in this country is entitled to have a mother and a father involved in his or her rearing and development.”

So much wrong with the above from Jim "Why can't I call gay people fairies" Walsh
