Would love to know the actual numbers on this.

So February is going to be "Player Appreciation Month".
    * 1 Battlepack every day you log in - Bronze weekdays, silver weekends
    * Shortcut bundles - pistol and grenades for all, DMR and shotguns for Premium
    * 1 double xp weekend for all, 1 additional for Premium
    * Community missions for gold battlepacks
    * DICE developer chats

What'd ya think ? Not sure what to make of it myself, one the one it's nice they're doing something, on the other giving away unlocks and making leveling up even easier takes some of the fun out the game (although I guess getting the shortcuts and using the boosts in optional).
Developer chats and community missions are a nice touch, but I'm more interested in the upcoming patches to be honest.

Edit: forgot to mention platoons are coming back, finally !

Could look at it two ways.

Firstly, they are finally trying to genuinely make amends to their users but then most of those loyal players would be high ranks / wouldnt need alot of unlocks etc.

so that leads me to believe it's the second reason, their numbers are falling and fast

There is a page on a website around somewhere that shows peak min and average player counts broken down by day since launch, saw it once but can't remember the site. Anyone ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭frantic190

I am halfway through unlocking the DMRs, going to leave it and do all the PDWs instead. Then I think I'll have everything unlocked once the shortcut bundles go live.

I just spent tonight suffering through team death match using my boosts to unlock the shotguns... Son of a bitch

Lag for me was woeful bad last night was suffering 30% packet loss at one stage and I couldn't get a kill for love nor money, cue lots of raging from me and plenty of giggles from the party I was in

What a joke, player appreciation week?

I dont feel appreciated, I feel scammed at this stage.

Biggest joke is the shortcut bundles imo, whats the point of the game if things are just givin not earned?

I mean the xp boosts already felt a bit cheaty, double xp weekend and 200% boost means over 100, 000 points per round of conquest large and unlocking stuff at a ridiculous pace anyway

Some of us would have preferred everything to have been unlocked by paying for the game when we bought it, Dara O'Briain style, but even we'd have to agree than any eejit at all could have seen the shortcut stuff coming a mile off since they'd done it before for BF3...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

tbh I rarely play more than 2-3 games a day (if any) and already on lv70, having unlocked most of the stuff
    poor idea imho

At least there was a pay wall for the shortcut bundles in BF3? So I wasnt refering to them, just the ones included in the player appreciation week.

They seem to be just unlocking DMR's, handguns and shotguns for all premium members, that is wrong imo if im understanding it correctly

I do understand your point though, acessability is important.
But these games come out every two years so if after 6 months you have everything unlocked whats the point in playing?
Bar the map packs and associated assignment weapons, which are usually handy to get.

Im all for them trying to give back to the community because the state of the game at launch but I dont want easy mode. Thats just my opinion though

Base players get all handguns and all grenades in shortcut packs; premium get that and all DMRs and all shotguns.
if after 6 months you have everything unlocked whats the point in playing?
I think if that's a problem, then your game has deeper problems to begin with - I mean, if it's not fun without homework... :D

Your probably right there, it may have something to do with my play style. While I enjoy the base game I do like to do the assignments/unlock conditions for wepons etc, for me they bring variety to the game forcing me to use weapons I may not normally have got around to.

Im not saying i like grinding out unlocks but I believe there is a balance to be struck between the two,grinding/acessability and with XP boosts,DP weekends, battlepacks and now weapon catagory unlocks its starting to to feel like its going to far to the acessability side imo.

As much as I hate to use COD as an example maybe a prestiege system or something similar, for people who are prepared to "go round again" there could be rewards and for those not at least they could unlock nearly everything by doing it once, just my 2 cents anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭DeWinterZero

I'd say the shortcut bundles will only unlock the weapon, not the attachments for those weapons as well. That way you can still have the fun of unlocking the attachments yourself. I've a service star in all pistols bar the FN57 & the shorty and I'm working on getting all the attachments for the rest.

Upcoming tweaks will help with the FN57 and probably make the rest of the pistols even more powerful (increased accuracy for 3x scoped m1911??? :D)

    UPCOMING BF4 PISTOL TWEAKS

    1) Increased the aimed accuracy of the M1911 to make it a viable choice once the COMPACT 45 has been unlocked. This gives the M1911 a clear accuracy advantage for range, while the COMPACT 45 has a clear ammunition per magazine advantage.
    2) Increased the close range damage of the M1911, QSZ-92, FN57, CZ-75 and COMPACT 45. This will allow all pistols to bypass Body Armor at close range. Additionally, the FN57 and the QSZ-92 have had their long range damage increased to allow them to properly bypass Body Armor at all distances. Finally, the CZ-75 has also had its long range damage raised to give it a diverse role among the handguns.
    3) Reduced the delay between pressing the trigger and the bullet firing for the M412 REX and .44 MAGNUM. This delay represents the way these weapons work in real life, while also improving their responsiveness in game.
    4) Increased the magazine capacity of the QSZ-92 to 20 rounds, the proper amount for this weapon in real life. Additionally reduced the recoil of the QSZ-92 to give it a clear difference from the FN57.
    5) Corrected a small error with the COMPACT 45 accuracy when crouched or prone. The weapon was accidently less accurate than intended.

Today's patch is approx 1.23 GB for PC.

    Notes:
Jan 30 PC Game Update Notes

    Mantle Support
The new Mantle renderer has been added in Battlefield 4. Most players can expect a performance increase by using this new low-level graphics API. Check out this news post [battlelog.battlefield.com] for the full details on Mantle, what the requirements are to run it, and how to enable it.

    CPU/GPU performance and monitoring
-Tweaked and improved CPU multi-core utilization to try and avoid stuttering and low framerate due to stalls that happened on some CPU and OS configurations.
-Users can now configure and control themselves how many CPU cores should be used in the game with the new “Thread.MaxProcessorCount” settings in User.cfg.
-“Render.DrawScreenInfo 1” now also shows information about which CPU and GPU is in the system, how many GPUs & CPU cores are used and which renderer (DirectX 11 or Mantle) is active
-Added new “PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable” command that records frame times on CPU & GPU and logs out to a .csv file
-AMD Catalyst driver 13.12 (or later) is now recommended instead of 13.9
-Enabled tile-based compute shader lighting optimization on Nvidia for improved GPU performance (already active on AMD GPUs)
-Improved performance with rendering and spotlights for all GPUs, primarily in in-door environments

    DMR Balance Tweaks
-Increased the damage of all DMRs across all ranges. Specifically, damage has been increased at long ranges to allow three-hit kills against unarmored opponents. Additionally, reduced the penalty to accuracy for sustained DMR fire, allowing more rapid follow up shots in combat. The amount of the damage increase varies from weapon to weapon, according to its intended range, rate of fire, and damage. We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of DMRs in combat, and determine if additional action is needed to make DMRs a viable mid to long range weapon.

    Other Items
-Greatly reduced the risk of crosshairs disappearing, which would also result in hit markers disappearing
-Added a headshot icon on the killcard. This should help identify instances where players are correctly killed by one shot
-Fixed an issue in Squad Deathmatch where the “Win/Lose” text was overlapping
-Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the SOFLAM
-Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the MAV
-Fixed the gameplay code to properly track the FOV (Field of View) changes in the options menu
-Fixed an issue where chat would break when entering "false" or "true" in the chat window
-Fixed an out-of-helicopter glitch in Air Superiority where players could spawn on the ground and play as infantry
-Fixed the misaligned crosshairs on the T90 MBT
-Added setting to tweak joystick dead zone
    -Various minor crash fixes

DMR buffing and performance tweaks? I'd buy that for a dollar...

Mantle is out two months late and...... its for their new cards and chips only. Even though they reference older cards in their performance examples.

I suppose I should have expected this. Meh, it was probably going to blue screen me anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

I think I'd actually be surprised if a games hardware manufacturer was to promote the older, cheaper stuff they sell instead of the newer, shinier, the-same-as-the-last-one-but-with-new-paint-and-twice-the-price model :D

I was under the impression that it would give performance increases from the 7800 series up , atleast , but I am sure I read that somewhere back before I bought my 7870 last october .

Also it seems to be taking ages to download

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,213 ✭✭✭MajesticDonkey

Mantle will support all Radeon HD 7000 cards in the future AFAIK, but just R7 and R9 cards at the moment - which is completely understandable IMO...probably to iron out any compatibility issues first.

3 different configs, 3 different locations, 3 tests done internally...

I'm still waiting for some 3rd party benchmarks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

I took one look at those and thought "Low-end my arse!" :D
If I had that low-end system, I'd see an improvement of about 99% without Mantle, Crust, Atmosphere or whatever else they want to call it :D

Absolutely I'd assume they have cherry picked the best cases.

Again not a third party AMD numbers seem to draw roughtly the same conclusions.

All Dices numbers really show is that the Intel Core i7-3970x Extreme is serious bottlenck for two R9 290x :D

Are you being charged for it?

Charged for what? The numerous AMD graphics cards I have bought over the years? Or the game which was promised pre-release Mantle support from 7800 series upwards due early December 2013?

I'm not actually angry. I have a working product. I was just looking forward to see how it reacts on my desktop, since its running a server OS with a hypervisor in front. Currently that gives me around a 40% drop in performance. I wanted to see if Mantle could bypass the hypervisor hold on the gpu. Or tank my system(the more logical result).

I am sure it was qualified with an up to before it ;)

I thought AMD and Dice have made it pretty clear up to now that Mantle would mainly help in CPU bound situations which is exactly what the figures show.

I am sure it is going to be a bug fest for a number of weeks anyway.

To be honest, if I had a 4960X and a 290X I would be quite happy with a 10% improvement.
