Everything gone quiet on the Gaelords server?..

Been away for the past few weeks :o

They decided to go China Rising only when it was released. Was active for a couple of days, then it killed it as people got sick of the maps.

Seems so, that was one of the regular servers I played on. Looks like a lot of the Irish servers are gone a bit dead.

Very much enjoyed that weekend.. That double xp is pretty handy.

I suck at sniping yet I still enjoy it. Managed to get enough XP to get the SRR. The difference once you get as far as 338-Recon it unreal. I was a very happy man considering how long it was taking me otherwise. Now I just need some attachments for it :P

    hey,

I was a late adopter over to BF3 on the XBox360, so am still getting good value out of it, but may look to get this soon.
I've heard dodgy things that it's not great on the 360 and suffers from slowdown / bad framerate. Is this true?
Any feedback from happy players appreciated!
Is it a lot better than BF3?

I dont like snipers, in fact I hate them and wish they were banned from the game; e.g. Flood Zone last night or some Dawnbreakers games.

However, I try it now and again and found the 338 Recon to be really good; more so than the other snipers. Is this just my imagination or is it good?

I reall don't get the hate for snipers, if its on your team they generally are useless providing its only a few from the side ill deal with it yes, but when on the other team its an easy target for a mortar or suav or ucav even a sneak around and knife job.

When you're playing rush or obliteration and fully half your team is in full rooftop camping sniper mode, instead of PTFOing, the hate gets really easy to understand. There you are, constantly getting into 3-vs-you CQB engagements and losing, while the other four squadmates (who are also your spawn points don't forget) are a mile away from the action, on top of the local tall rock/building/crane, getting maybe one kill per magazine and not even bothering to spot.

Those are the moments I long for friendly fire.

Don't get me wrong, aggressive recon players are worth their weight in gold, but they're at most 50m out from the action, they're dropping beacons so their teammates can respawn closer to where they'd be useful, they're dropping motion sensors or tugs to give their team a tactical advantage, or they're C4ing armour or walls to make new routes, that kind of thing. They're not sitting on a crane a mile away, and they hit their left mouse button more than a dozen times in a round...

I was playing a round of 32man conquest of dragon pass last night, my 4 squad mates spent the entire game on top of a mountain with a spawn beacon "sniping".
Naturally we lost the game, and I'd go so far as to suggest that the winning team is always the one with the fewer snipers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Conquest on Dragon Pass is by turns great and infuriating - it's great when the team all goes in the same direction and it's infuriating when you're trying to hold F against all the armour coming from D, while the rest of your team goes off fighting over E, even when you know if you took D, you had their armour all holed up between D and C, and E and G fall by default to you.

Add in half a team of snipers trying for the mountaintops, and it's just better to quit and go try another server, to be honest.

It's one of the fun things about rush or obliteration, there's a defined goal and the team shouldn't split up like that. I say should, but obliteration on paracel storm has me raging every time when 90% of the team thinks it's TDM and ignores the bomb completely, and some utter goat molesting idiot takes the team's attack boats and tries to drive around sniping at things instead of doing the attack boat's actual job, which is nipping in, spiriting the bomb carrier away and dropping them on a target island and providing heavy support in the process.

I quite like being a sniper.

Its a great feeling pissing the other team off so much that most are hellbent on killing you and don't notice the rest of the squad sneaking around behind them, or killing the same idiot 5 times in a row in the exact same spot because they're determined to get you back at least once. Being the annoying git that keeps killing you has its benefits for my team.

Oh and I also spot like crazy (Makes it easier for me to aim if there's stuff in the way), laze whatever comes near me hoping that the engineers on my team actually realise they can fire at it and do more damage/take out that annoying scout chopper etc and leg it in to cap a flag once I think I've cleared the area from a distance.

Not all snipers are mountain/rooftop dwelling hermits :)

I've changed my mind-set on public games, I now no longer expect people to make any attempt at teamwork, if it does happen I'm pleasantly surprised, if not it's no big deal since I'm no longer expecting it.

Slightly more on topic, does anyone else think that this month is going to make or break for this game, and potentially the future of the battlefield franchise ?
Ok, maybe that's a bit over the top, but this month I'm expecting a wide ranging client and server side patch, the introduction of mantle and possibly the release of Second Assault.
If this doesn't result in major improvements for the majority of players could the potential backlash be enough for EA to start to pull away from the game ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Mantle's being delayed, last I heard; Second Assault is more likely to hit first since most of the work on that's already done, and it's only DLC while Mantle would be deep core work with much more scope for nasty bugs.

It's the two lawsuits that should be the real concern - in and of themselves they don't look like much, but they're a signal that not all is well outside of the fan base. Whatever about RandomTeenagePunter20371 on the bf4 forums, if your stockholders and investors are pee'd off, you're in trouble...

See this is something I always differentiate between and annoys me as it's recon class not sniper class.

I pretty much 80% of the time play recon and I am lvl 103 at the mo and I have a total of 5 yes thats right 5 sniper rifle kills at last count.

Recon should be used to keep serious pressure on the opposing team with well placed beacons and dealing out some hurt via those little brown packages that go boom.

Many a game I've been in where my squad has carried an honestly woeful bad team by the fact that we would refuse to get off their home flag due to a well placed beacon eventually leading to more of the opposing team coming giving our team an easier time on the other flags (assuming they aint all numpties sitting up on hills racking up those 4 or so kills a game)

I understood I was delayed until later this month while EA put everything on hold to fix the existing bugs, that's why I'm expecting everything (patches, mantle, dlc) to be released at once, or at least in very quick succession.

Like I say, if it fails to deliver and results in further stock losses for EA, the future of battlefield could be very bleak indeed

Going to switch assault rifles tonight and go for something different. Have been using the Sar-21 lately which I like, but I'm getting crushed in 1v1 situations.

Want to try the AEK, but is it true you can't use the M20 shotgun attachment? I usually switch to it for tighter areas. Would I still need it with the AEK?

Not sure if that's true or not, but the AEK is an absolute beast in close quarters, shouldn't need the attachment.

Don't use the M320 DART or the M26 MASS, equip the shorty as a secondary instead and use the now spare slot for the defib paddles and run as a combat medic. Waaaaay more use to your team and far more XP points besides.

Speaking of sidearms, played some pistol only servers last night - great craic altogether, if anyone hasn't tried it I highly recommend you give it a go.

Aahhhh... I thought you could only have pistols as your sidearm (never used them as I had the M26 Mass). Didn't realise there was a shotgun sidearm. Haven't unlocked yet but will work on that.

I have started becoming more conscious of dropping medkits down for people lately though. But yeah, if the M26 is gone I'll throw in the defibs.

In TDM (mostly playing it until I get more used to the game), if you defib someone does the kill still count for the enemy's score?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

The shorty is excellent, it's my default secondary now unless my primary's a shotgun (in which case I'll use the 1911 or the G18/93R, depending on the map and playstyle).

And no, the kill still counts for the enemy's score; but your team regains the ticket they lost from the kill in other game modes.

Crap. That's what I was afraid of. Hate to revive someone and they die again almost instantly resulting in 2 deaths. Will have it equipped anyway to get used to it and use it when I know it's fairly safe.

Yep, gave it a try based of some of those posts - wasn't expecting to enjoy it all that much, was quite surprised by how much fun it is and felt the concept needed a little bump :)

Thanks for recommendation by the way !

That's why the right way to do it is to make sure they're not being shot at by a tank or the entire opposing team (don't laugh, both happen on a regular basis to me, especially on locker where some idiot will crawl up to your twitching corpse in front of a door into C that has the entire team on the far side playing support and magdumping LMGs constantly through the doorway; revive you and you die before you can decline the revive).

Then you either fully charge the paddles and get a full-health revive, or to do quick revives and throw down a medkit to let them get back to full health that way.

I never said sniper class though, I said sniper ;) I get what you're saying though, it does be annoying when people refer to it as the sniper class.

I've a few hundred kills with sniper rifles, snipers can be quite effective as I mentioned above. In fact if you have 2 or 3 good snipers in good spots they can pin down a team quite easily or give the rest of your team an easier job killing the enemy (suppression, marking etc)

It depends entirely on a persons play style. Some want to hang back and get their longest headshot stat and contribute spotting enemies for the team, others like getting involved in the infantry mix.

Depending on the map (usually rogue transmission or paracel storm), I'll run an M40 with a 3.4x scope (no scope glint), with a silencer to keep me off the mini map and try and get myself involved in medium to mid/long range gun fights. Any closer and I'd be at the mercy of assault rifles or carbines, any further and I'd be too far from the action. Otherwise, on other maps I tend to run a silenced carbine if I'm playing recon.

I recently unlocked the 20x and the 40x scopes. Tried them for one game of rogue transmission and hated the idea I was so far away. So I ran around with the 14x variable until I was next killed.

Your comment on obliteration is spot on. This is the current state of play, ignore bomb and kill people, hopefully when parachuting down. Usually a game mode improves the longer it is available but this, in my opinion, is now actually ruined, whereas it was excellent when first out.

    Shame
