    TK Maxx.

I got two Le Cruset dishes there for €25 each last Feb in the Galway city store.

Obviously they're not Le Creuset, but you can buy cast iron casseroles in Ikea for 50 odd euro. I have one and it does require occasional seasoning but is brilliant, particularly for cooking for a big group.

Homestore & More also do a similar range of cast iron, and they're only around €25-€30.

Another vote for the Homestore and More ones, I have a few of them and am delighted with them.

Aldi or Lidl often have enamelled cast iron cookware as do tkmax.

I think Aldi have them in at the moment.

Another TK Maxx vote from me, have picked up lots of La Crueset bits and bobs there over time!

I have an Aldi/Lidl one (cant remember which) and it's great, one of my most-used piece of cookware for the past 3 or 4 years.

Le Creuset are expensive, but god they're worth it.

The ones I have were bought by my mam when I was about 3 or 4. 20 years ago

I have one that I got in Dunnes. Still going strong 10 years on.

I've been very lucky with picking up Le Creuset in TK Maxx. Still don't have a casserole, though: it's on my long list of cookware covets :pac:

Long day at work being eased by a cuppa herbal tea, Lindt coconut and Michel Roux Jnr and Mary Berry on Food & Drink :D

I was a bit disappointed with Food and Drink. :(

It's a bit disappointing generally :( Only redeemed somewhat by the enthusiasm of Michel, imo. Tonight it was convenient filler viewing between a double dose of Paxman :pac:

What's this Food and Drink, a TV version of this forum?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

It's brilliant, look out for it on BBC2 next Monday at 8.30! I love Mary Berry and I love Michel Roux! I really enjoy the wine tasting element and I particularly enjoyed the piece on the various cuts of beef tonight, who would have thought that a cut of tasty beef is referred to as the 'mouse'! Tom Kerridge is on it next week so looking forward to that!

Gombeen here decided to walk the 5k into work this morning. In the lashing rain. In jeans. And runners.

Spent the first 15 mins at work trying to dry my jeans under the hand dryer, luckily I have spare socks at my desk so I'm sitting at work in socks with my runners stuffed full of newspaper.

    Urge to eat donuts... rising!

Poor you! You need to purchase a very good bottle of wine on the way home and drink it all this evening, it's the only thing in situations like this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,858 ✭✭✭homemadecider

A bottle of wine - I wish! I do have a pot of beef chilli waiting for me at home, I will have a bowl of that topped with melted cheese and mashed avocado for dinner. In front of the fire. I think it will be followed by hot chocolate. :)

Where would a person get horseradish?

also, how much would be needed for, say, about 300ml of sauce.

They often have it among the fresh veg in Polish supermarkets, no idea how much you'd need for sauce though :)

    Good fruit and veg shop?

I know Nolans in Clontarf has horseradish

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭Animord

Really depends where you are. The English Market in Cork has it. And you don't need much.

I buy it whole and what is left over I mix with a little vinegar, pulverise in a food processor and freeze for use later.

This recipe only uses 15 grams. A whole horseradish would be in the region of 300/500g I would guess.

Any decent green grocers will sell it

I saw it in Fallon and Byrne before.

All the talk of lasagne & carbs over on Dinner has reminded me of this piece of insanity from crazy old Paula Deen.

Am I correct in thinking you could use paella rice instead of arborio rice for risotto?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

Not really Faith. Arborio rice used in risotto is what gives it the creaminess. Paella rice will not give you this creaminess and will absorb more liquid (while also being a bit more al dente) but if you're stuck and you continue to stir the paella rice like you would arborio then it should work fine as a substitute but I wouldn't use it all the time.

It's a lot cheaper than arborio (in Tesco anyway) so I use it all the time. It takes a little bit longer to cook but otherwise no problem.
