Sure everyone should have a fibre cabinet at their back door.

    ;)

I know someone who has one in their garden, their speed was 1.5Mb the other day.

Their house might be connected to another cabinet a few km away -- there's two boxes closer to our estate than the one it's wired to, and one of those cabinets are on the same road as one were connected to

Thankfully we're still getting better than 1.5Mbps (around 8Mbps).

    Way off topic,

But perhaps light at the end of the tunnel for some

Lucky 1/2 million ....... Eircom doing 1.4 million FTTC ......
we will roll out a 100% fibre network that will connect directly into .5 million homes, offering speeds in excess of 150Mb/s.

    Yes,
But they mention that it is to be aimed a rural houses that Eircom and UPC don't touch.

More than likely just the tip of the iceberg also.

Provided they have the all important back-haul to cope with peak time demand. As we've discovered here, whether it's DSL, CO-AX, FTTC or even FTTH it ain't worth a dry ball of goat sh**e if the ISP can't handle the pressure:(

No that's the one dedicated to their estate,Eircom have been fiddling with it a lot, somethings definitely not right with it.

No, I'm afraid that isn't correct, it seems they plan on doing semi-urban areas not done by UPC, but probably covered by Eircom eFibre.

Was woken this morning by sound of KN starting work on pulling fibre in our estate(Moat, Co. Westmeath). The existing ADSL cab is < 100 m from my house, so am over the moon to see them start some kind of work, even if the actual rollout is still some months away. I'll update the map (if that is still going) when I actually see where the new cabinet is going, even though I have a good idea where it will be

considering how many other ISP's use their existing fibre network that shouldn't be a problem

Must be at least 10 cabinets throughout New Ross town. We were supposed to be switched on in December. Then January. February maybe?

When I spoke to Eircom over the phone I was redirected by an ever so helpful employee to their coverage map.

    Brilliant.

To further my post from a few days ago, I rang Vodafone yesterday to get the efibre, but was told I'd have to call the next day, as that was the earliest they could take orders from my exchange...

Anyway, rang them today, and have it all sorted. I was told I'd get a maximum of 40Mbit from my line, which is OK.

Something I had not realised, is that when you go for BB-only on eFibre, it means you can no longer make use of the phone for incoming or outgoing calls, as is the case when you only pay for BB with ADSL setup. So, I had to upgrade to the slightly dearer package to keep calls and added 100mins to landline and mobiles.

Was supposed to get a text about when a tech would come out to replace my master socket, but still waiting on that.

Does someone call out to your house from Vodafone to install something when efibre comes to your area?

I'm sick of waiting for Eircom upgrades.
I like in Ballindooley which is pretty close to Galway City however the broadband speed is 1.7mb due to the distance from the exchage and it isn't even enough so stream a HD youtube video.

I explored mobile broadband, however I don't get a signal from any of the providers from my house. I've also contacted a wireless broadband compant for metro broadband, and even though the transmitter is fairly close, he wouldn't even test the connection from my house. I would have been happy to pay for anything above the speed I'm getting now, but they have a policy that if they can't see the transmitter from the roof, they won't install.

Satellite broadband is a joke. I'd happily pay the €120 a month if they didn't have the ridiculous throttling. And UPC is obviously not available.

Anybody have any other ideas on a route I can take for broadband?

I average 100gb per month through Netflix and other media streaming.

How would you use 100 gb on a 1.7 meg connection? You must be a patient man. That has been my argument all along. Before I got fibre I had a perfectly usable and stable 8-10 meg. Why didn't Eircom tackle people like yourself before people like me and try and raise everyone to a decent standard.

    Captive audience ?

It's also a mater of area. Let's say you can get 1.7Mb 4Km from the exchange but you can only get decent efibre within 1Km of a cabinet. Then you are going to need 16 cabinets to cover the exchange area.

Each cab can support 192 connections. Take into account household size and BB uptake and anywhere with less than 192 people / Km2 doesn't look as attractive. Maybe they can back fill later on but for now it makes more sense to go for the low hanging fruit especially if you have to borrow money to pay for the roll out.

Just to update, I finally got the eFibre setup yesterday. Happy with it so far.

Seems to be maintaining that speed with little fluctuation so far...

I live in Drimnagh in Dublin 12

apparently even though its not supposed to get efibre until at least April (following the map guide on eircom.net)
I rang them up friday morning as I got sick of the connection, I got pushed up too 17megs their a few months back while waiting for efibre to come in.
It was "ok" at non peak hours but at peak hours I couldn't even watch a youtube video on low....
So I got frustrated , rang them up and ask when is it coming to my area, because I'm not putting up with this dismal connection speed anymore, I mean I live in D12, close too the city, surely they should of had it efibre enabled by now, all the surrounding areas have it enabled

The girl on the phone said sorry... etc... going by a script no doubth.
eventually she said too me she'll be sending out a technician too install it in our home in 2 weeks, and it should be enabled in less then a month

quite happy too hear that, but I can't help but feel I am a fool too believe her because on their website it says april
and their are no efibre cabinets installed in the whole drimnagh area and even crumlin

she gave me a ref number for the case as well

Its not just how close to dublin you are. Its how many cabs are underground, and where there are problems with the council or ESB cant provide power yet etc etc. Also if the area is well served by short phone lines it'll drop down the list to people a few miles from their exchange.

And I dont know how she'd send a tech before the cab had been installed and commissioned.

Don't know what profile I'm on. How would I find that out?

VF CS said, when I was ordering, that I could expect about 40mbit with my line.

I'm approx 600m from the cabinet, following the path I expect the line to take with Eircom manhole covers. Distance would be about half that as the crow flies.

For comparison, here was my ADSL speed:

    Line standard VDSL2

I get fairly good speeds considering my attenuation.

Think I have much space to move to the 70mb profile.

I'm just wondering how the FTTC cabinets are coping in flooded areas.

Cork City Centre doesn't actually have any but there may be one or two around in low lying areas away from the central island that's served from Cork Central Exchange.

I doubt briney water would do electronics much good!

I'd give them a ring about that upload speed. You should be on 40/15 or better with those stats.

I'd imagine the ones on Wandesford Quay and Union Quay aren't doing so well!
